I think it's part of the life support system....remember in episode 5 when Unit 1 got blased by the particle beam....Shinji was unconscious and was give a heart massage by the thing on his chest.

oh yeah i remeber that. then wouldnt the suit weigh pretty heavy when they wear it with all the stuff in it. like first the thing that makes the suit shrink ( the thing that does it is on the back i think with the number on it, or is it the sholder pads that shrinks it?) :heh: oh well.
