okay, think about these two characters... VERY different personalities................ so what exactly are we comparing here?
we're comparing the WIT of the characters... who do you think has the potential to be more intelligent? Lain or Ed?
we have Lain with her ablities to Search up anything on a RealWorld/Wired Protocol Database of Prophesy {which in a sense implies that she knows EVERYTHING}
then we have Ed who can Hack thru just about any type of CPU, AI, or Informative Network even!
so who is the more powerful being?
if we faced the two off, Lain could simply DELETE Ed's memories of the abilities of Hacking and the such. however, Ed could always Hack into the Wired and in a sense also ERASE all that Lain knows. so in that sense, the two are equal, so let's elimitate this possibility... DELETING doesn't count.
so who do you believe is more witty in their craftmanship?

Good thing I've seen the introduction of Ed in Cowboy Bebop...
Tough question. It hardly took Ed any time to hack into the Bebop itself or the laser satellites around Earth in the tape he was introduced in. He's a quick and intelligent little bugger...but does Lain need the Wired to use her memory power? Would it matter since "we are all connected"? Could Ed's skills tackle the real life Wired?
As to the wittiest one, from what I've seen, Ed is by far the more cunning in form and function. Does Lain leave behind little Lain smilies when she accesses systems?

Hmm: God vs. the world's weirdest 13(?) year old... I'd have to give it to Lain, though Ed could no doubt handle any regular hacker her(?)self.
well, Lain gets my vote to be smarter when solving things just because she is a program and that she is constantly able to download information that she does not know. but Ed, as a human, can ultimately do some things that a computer program cannot. like differenciate emotion from action. something Lain is not capable of. So in that respect, Ed is smarter.
but this comparison is like comparing who is smarter, a computer program, or a human being. both have ablilities that the other does not. so one cannot really compare the two.

I don't think Lain is truely software. She has emotions, like when she was shy in asking her father for new Navi, when she was annoyed with Cheshire Cat, when she was happy Arisu understood her on the school roof, etc.

http://www.cosplayhell.com/lain.jpg Let me get this straight. After I punched some guy out in Cyberia, caused some Accela freak to blow his head off, brought the deaths of the MIB, outwitted Masami Eiri...after all this, you say I'm less cunning??!?! For ----'s sake, you people are so hard to please. I'm sorry I didn't go around "leaving little Lain smilies around". Shitfuckers.
Mmmm...Lain can flame! *swoon*

I like Ed, really. She's my favorite character on Bebop. But can she beat God? No, she's human, Lain is the god of the Wired, the end. Let's not let this degenerate into a flame thread. Ed may have a better sense of style, but that's not the question here. When you're a god, style is beneath you.

Oh no. Head for the hills!

I was trying to answer these questions. I think Ed is wittier in craftsmanship (In my definition of cunning as the question was asked) than Lain. And my question still stands...does Lain need the Wired for her memory powers?
Said...I:

deviceboy, I know that now...I wrote the post after seeing only episode with Ed in it, his first appearance. I don't think it's mentioned in the 1st ep that she's a she...but I know now. :B:

Any new thoughts on this?

As a sidenote, I'd like to know which one you'd rather have at your side when you have any computer trouble.

Ok i got beat to the point on this one. I side with saying Lain. Ed handle a hacker? Not only that I think she could handle anyone if they were using anything electronic against her. Which in itself is very impressive. However that still doesn't compare to the powers of God. Thats how i see things. :D

Lain is not intelligent as such, just as a computer would not be "intelligent". She merely has all the data that ever was and ever will be in her mind. No biggie. ;)
Ed is more intelligent naturally, but it's not even comparing apples to oranges, it's more like comparing an apple to an omnipotent cyber flesh orange with various super powers.
Now to who is cleverer: Ed also wins. Lain is straight forward, like a computer program. Ed has style.
