So what do you think about Macross? I haven't heard too much about this series here but I'm sure you guys got an opinion on it.

What's your favorite Macross? Mine's Macross Plus (big surprise). It's got excellent music, outstanding animation quality, and the best fight scene in all of anime. The plot isn't that deep and doesn't completely explain the "conflict between Isamu and Guld, but it's a good story none the less. Macross Plus: The Movie does a better job at explaining it, and is worth seeing if you haven't.

Of course the other Macross series/movies are good too. The original is still one of the best animes ever and is a must for any anime fan. Macross 7 is the only one I haven't seen since it's not out in the US so I can't really say anything about it, but I'll see it sooner or later.

What is Macross with out Minmei? You either love her or hate her. I sure some one has an opinion about her.

Well, I said enough for now.

I like maccross II the movie

Really, I can't understand how people can hate Minmay. She's so cute, and her songs are cool... even if they sound old... but there is a new version of "Tenchi no enogu", released in 1997 for the 15th anniversary of Macross, which is really cool.
As for my favorite Macross, I would say Macross 7. Some fans hate it, but it's a very cool series, with probably the best characters and best music.
Macross Plus the movie was also cool too.

I've seen Macross the Movie: Do You Remember Love?, Macross II, & Macross Plus. Of the three, my fave is Macross Plus. I liked the story, the animation is beautiful, and the music rocks!!! :B:
I found the first Macross movie a little dull, but it was miles better than Macross II which I thought was dreadful (the bloody awful dubbing didn't help matters either).

Can't help you StramiT, I haven't seen Robotech..., :)

I really enjoyed Macross Plus. I loved the characters, the music (voices is such a great song), and the fighting scenes were pretty good too. I haven't seen any of the other macross stuff but I'm sure that if I see it anywhere I would buy it. Anyways, a little off topic but in Macross Plus what was the name of the song played at the end credits?

Macross the original TV series I regard as one of the pioneers of mecha anime. I absolutely loved it, of course the animation has aged somewhat but you get that.

Macross Do You Remember Love, I thought was pretty cool as well, the movie did well to complement the TV series and the "update" art compared with it's original TV predecessor was quite welcomed.

Macross II .. er.. yeah.. my personal opinion as soon as they released the Minmei defense system I knew no good was to come of this. I did like the mecha design but they really could've done a lot more with the storyline.

Macross 7, oh my god, what went wrong. Did the animation budget all get spent on food ? I thought this was an insult to the entire Macross genre. Only saving grace I could say was the opening sequence.

Macross 7 Dynamite, oh when will the torture end ? Please the TV series was bad enough.

Macross Plus thank god, I love this series and one of my all time favourites. I loved everything about it and I find it extremely difficult to flaw.

Macross Plus Movie, man I thought the OVAs were awesome, I was wrong this took it a new level, restructuring of the story, added animations scenes. I applaud it.

I hear that they're doing a Macross Plus second series OVA, not too sure on the details but it was mentioned in the Newtype a few months ago, hope it's up to the high standard of it's predecessor.

Yes, and as the title says, it's trash. That manga is boring as hell. Macross 7 TV and OVAS are a lot better!

They're pretty much the same especially in the first half of the series. The Protoculture reference is the big difference. In Macross, it is only a reference to the culture and civilization of the Zentraedi's creators mainly things that didn't revolve around war. Also, you never see or know the name of whoever made the Zentraedi. In Robotech, Protoculture is an energy source created from the Flower of Life. You do get to see who made the Zentraedi's makers in Robotech because scenes from the Robotech Masters were added in to help tie in the second series.

Other things that're different are obviously the names of the characters: Hikaru instead of Rick, Misa instead of Lisa etc. The machines in Macross are nuclear powered. The name of the ship is Macross where it's just SDF1 in Robotech. One interesting thing is that in Macross Minmay is spelled the English way while in Robotech it's spelled Minmei, the Japanese way. But basicaly, the plot is roughly the same. A race of war making aliens are overcome by the power of a love song.

The original's the greatest by far, then Plus. I like the Minmay songs (in Japanese of course)

Well the dubbed version of DYRL has horrible VA's but at least the songs were left intact. Please try to see the japanese version if you can.

The ending of Plus is somewhat dissapointing although the movie version is better ending leaving you with a better scene. However the whole Guld vs. Isamu still isn't explained as well as it should have been.

ROBOTECH IS NOT MACROSS!!

Sorry but there's a difference. Robotech is a good series but there are differences especially since Robotech includes 2 other series that have nothing to do with Macross.

Anyways, last I heard Robotech was coming out on DVD for around $15 a disc with 6 episodes per disc. Go to the Robotech tread and there's some talk about it. here (http://animeboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7110)

Is that the one witch music is used as a weapon?

isamudyson
02-04-01, 04:17 AM
They all have music used as a wepon in some form. Macross II is the one with the reporter Hibiki who tries to uncover the truth about the UN Spacy hiding the fact that their Minmei song attack doesn't work. Also that there is a greater threat than a few rouge Zentran attacking Earth, but a new race the Marduk are actually he ones controlling the Zentran.

10-04-01, 03:31 AM
UGH, one of the reasons I hate macross 7 is the crapification of Isamu's ride into a glorified walking stereo. It's like: "uh, guys? sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, sooowwwwwy." Come to think of it, the only movie/animation/television I've ever seen that dealth with 'no sound in space' was akira. Maybe I just live a cloistered existence.

Music and love is definitely the main themes throughout the macross world. Too bad you get cheesy love in macross II and cheesy j-pop in macross 7. Yoko Kanno saved Macross Plus from cheesy music, and the love part was ok, if having the effect of 'been there, done that'.

isamudyson
10-04-01, 11:31 AM
Macross 7 is the only one I haven't seen but I kind of know what it's about. As far as sound in space, Akira was cool if only for that one part. The only other movie I know of that does the same is 2001:A Space Odyssey. As far as Love and music:

Love is a theme in many stories, movies, books etc. because it's one of the most important emotions we have. Perhaps it's the the most important one. In Macross, it makes it more than just a war story about fighting aliens. You get to see the relationship between Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay go from Hikaru and Minmay towards Hikaru and Misa with many fluctuations back and forth. Who doesn't like a good love triangle? Who ends up with their loved one and who doesn't?

Music can make us feel good, strong, sad, and of course, love. Look at how much it is a part of our lives. You listen to it in the car, it's in every movie or TV show, and just about anywhere you go. Music in Macross shows us just how much a part of our lives it is. When the enemy is a race that doesn't even know of it's existence, the power of it becomes even more apparent. Imagine what life would be like without it. Quiet for sure.

I can't believe you don't like Macross 7 music. Listen to "Dynamite Explosion", "Planet Dance" or "Totsugeki loveheart"... you CAN'T LOVE THEM.
And people in space can hear Basara's song because before he starts he shoots "speaker pods" to the other ships so that they can hear him.

It's a bad translation of Macross: Do You Remember Love? Macross DYRL is the whole Macross series compressed into a movie, with a few changes. Depending on the copy you saw, it was probably edited heavily and many scenes were cut.

As far as I know it's just a remix someone did between between songs from both series. It's a pretty good mix and sounds great.

There hasn't been any cross overs between the series nor will there be any. They're way to different from each other and I don't see how or why anyone would. I don't think Eva could be mixed with any other series. Now Macross/ Gundam might be interesting.

I haven't seen a whole episode of Robotech since I was 5. What is Macross? Is it that floating city they were riding in and is it the same one in Macross Plus. Why were they riding through space anyway and how does the Macross tie in with the movies? jeez its been awhile.

No. The macross is the real name of the SDF-1.

isamudyson
30-04-01, 12:56 AM
That's right, the name of the ship is Macross or Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

http://www.anime.net/macross/images/story/Chronology/ParadiseLost.GIF

First, Robotech was an attempt to translate Macross and bring it to the US. Macross is only 36 episodes which was too short to syndicate in America, so 2 other series [Southern Cross and Mospeada] were added. The story of Macross was changed to integrate the 3 series. Overall, it's mostly the same, but there are some significant changes, especially in later episodes of the Macross part of Robotech. For example, Max and Miriya's daughter in Robotech is Dana who is seen in the second part of Robotech. In Macross, Max and Millia have 7 daughters and one of them, Mylene, is seen in Macross 7.

In Macross, it all started in 1999 when an unknown alien ship crashed on the Earth. The people of Earth rebuilt it and on the same day it was ready for it's first flight, the aliens called the Zentradi attacked the Earth. During the fighting, the Macross did a space fold, and something went wrong. Instead of just the ship warping, the entire island including the city that was built was taken with it. Everything ended up near Pluto instead of the moon, the intended destination. So that's how 70,000 civilians ended up on the ship. The rest of the series is the journey back to Earth and the continued fight against the Zentradi.

The original Macross ship is seen throughout the rest of the Macross series, but it was damaged badly in the first series, so it doesn't play much of an active role. But it is the same ship. Macross Plus, Macross 7, Flashback 2012 are all sequels to Macross. Macross II is not an official sequel because it wasn't done by Studio Nue and Tatsunoko. It's considered to be in an alternate universe.

Check out the Macross Compendium (http://www.anime.net/macross/index.html) for everything you ever wanted to know about Macross. It's got the official timeline, character bios, episode and movie synopsis, and much more.

What is the ROBOTECH movie anyway?

isamudyson
02-05-01, 03:28 AM
First, it has nothing at all to do with Macross. It was created as a story to fit between the 1st and 2nd Robotech series. I'm not really too sure what the plot was, but I know that about 60% of the animation was from Megazone 23 which was about a giant colony ship controlled by a computer. No one knew that they were on a ship or that there was a computer controlling their perceived real world. It did have a holographic pop idol sorta like Sharon Apple minus the psycho part.

The movie was marketed by Matchbox, who was financing it, to be for real young kids, like 8 years old. No wonder the test screenings were not very good. Kids were crying because it was violent and such. As far as I know it was only test screened in Texas and was never officially released.

It was probably a good thing it wasn't. Sounds like it wouldn't be too good. It's been a long time since I saw Megazone but I don't really see how it could've been turned into Robotech.
