Yui's accident

I was just wondering, exactly what was the cause of Yui's accident? of what nature was it exactly?

i've read somewhere that it was an S2 engine accident - i always thought it was because she tryied to sync with unit 01?. If it was because of the S2, then why was the engine taken out again of unit 01?

I've heard a theory that what happened to Yui was no accident, but it was a requiremnt to get the Eva working. We know that each Eva had possessed a soul, so you could assume that they need to have souls to work. This theory also lead to the argument that this is why Eva Unit O went beserk a few times, because Units 1 and 2 had the souls of the mothers of the pilots in them, but Unit 0 did not (because does Rei have a mother?).
It is said that Ritsuko's mother is in Unit 0, and it attacked Gendo and Rei because of her feelings of abandonment and hate towards them.

I don't yet have my own opinion on this, but I'm working on it :D

Your in luck, i know my opinion on the matter.

Firstly, the evas were never intended to have an S^2 organ (only the eva series were), so it was nothing to do with an accident of this nature.

Secondly, it was not really an accident. Yui planned it, she decided to remain inside eva so that there would always be evidence that humanity existed.

Anyhow it seems that she planned on synching with 01 and being absorbed.

anyway i do believe that it was no accident and that Yui did intend to remain in Eva. I only tried to verify whether my assumptions were true.

If yui said she was "evidence" that mankind existed doesn't that mean that mankind is gone if she's the only evidence?

I believe that Yui said it in the End of Evangelion, about the Eva being evidence of man, that is.

Well it would be her soul within the eva, and it is the soul that makes a human.

The eva's are cloned from adam/Lilith, but are considered human as each has a human soul within.

I took it to mean her as well, not just the empty husk of an eva.

I thought that big bad Naoko set up the 'accident', because she was jealous of lovely wonderful Yui? :kawaii:
But this leaves a question - When EVA-01 goes berserk in episodes 1-2, is that Yui, the EVA being itself, or Lucifer?

Yeah, I remember somebody had a post where they said that in Death:Rebirth, Naoko said she was plotting to do away with Yui, but I haven't see it, so I'm not entirely sure.

hmm...i believe she said this because when she was absorbed into Eva 01...she believed that HCP would go into completion and that humans would all become one...however..that was not the case. U must remember that that phrase was a flashback of Yui when she was alive.

Well, I've seen Death:Rebirth, and I distinctly remember hearing Naoko say she was plotting to do away with Yui... so it coulda been in D:R...

Other than that, I advise not to bother with D:R. It's just for people who haven't seen the series, and even then it's not as good as the series itself.

Well for starters, the if the S2 engie had anything to do with the accident, which i don't think so, it was never removed. Later on in the episode where the eva eats the angel as you may recal an S2 engine is visible. My theory is that the Eva absorbed Yui because the Eva ha no sould and therefor, the body of the eva absorbed the first soul that was put into it.
