Are there any fans of the original mobile suit gundam on this forum? If you haven't seen the original 3 movies, I recommend you do. They are spectacular (even though the animation is low quality, but what do you expect from 1979?). If you're a fan of gundam wing you should see these movies, gundam wing is just an "Alternate universe" storyline from the original.
I'm also wondering if anyone's seen the "Gundam 08th MS Team" series. If so, how is it?

I've seen some (first four eps or so) of the Gundam 08th MS Team, it's great! (from what I saw) I'd recomend getting at least the first few episodes, just to see if you like it. And after you've seen that you like it, collect the rest.

There's been about 8 incarnations of Gundam. I've only seen GW, though.

You'd probably want to start with the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" movies. There's 3 of them, i don't remember the exact names of them, but they shouldn't be too hard to find. Then there were some other series about the same war: Gundam 0079 and 0080. Then there are quite a few spinoff series and about 4 or 6 alternate universe storylines.

Well, most Gundam series are completely independant, and the only thing they have in common is the Gundams.

Gundam Wing is the most highly regarded series because of it's popularity. It's the most popular sereis to date in the Gundam series. You may want to start with that.

Gundam Wing is the most popular series in the US, probably just because of it's release on tv. I think the reason this series was picked is that it's plot isn't too hard for most people to understand and it doesn't have to be edited as much as some other series. I actually prefer the original gundam movies, though.
In GW Zechs is just a rip off of Char from the original. They each wear nearly identical masks and are brothers to a main female character.
Don't get me wrong, GW rocked. The original seemed to be more about realistic and more of an epic, people actually died and it is the origin of the gundams. I recommend you see both.

I'd really like to see them all, but I don't know how to get my hands on anything besides GW.

0079 is such a great anime. its the one who started the mecha craze. gw is like star wars and the original gundam series is like star trek, do to the more details on the science of the story(minovsky particles, clean fusion reactors, creation of the colonies, etc.). i recommend it but it only comes in subtitles.
hmmm... why havnt i seen this thread be4?
anyway...
yeah, you can call me a fan of "THE ORIGINAL GUNDAM" or the Amuro Ray storyline, and yeah, the other independent storylines were mere spinoffs from the original. they were more like "what if" storylines - what if the gundams just fought each other in gundam fights, etc.
even the Gundam used by Amuro - Nu Gundam is considered to be THE most powerful gundam in the whole Gundam universe. when it comes to the best pilots, You have Char Aznable, he is sooo good a pilot, he does not need a gundam to go head to head with Amuro.

I have seen the 08 MS team and it is really good. There may not have all those techno stuff in GW or the super unrealitic fight in space. But it is just ... good. The fight are more real and the battles are somewhat closer to what a real battle ( if there is gundam in the real world) would look like.
One question ryezen, if Nu Gundam is considered to be THE most powerful gundam in the whole Gundam universe, what about gundam DX? After all, GDX shoot down 1 huge giantic colony laser with 1 single super-charged cannon.

So the first Gundam series isn't available dubbed?
I'm a fan of nearly everthing Gundam (Strangely, I haven't seen Wing yet, not out here on videos or TV!).
I had been lucky enough to see the Gundam movies (0079) and
and recollect very vaguely of afew 0079 episodes that I watched in Hong Kong as a kid but my brother got them from recently from animevillage.com I think (that's what it says on the side of the box) and I can sure say, NTSC tapes aren't cheap! The first movie has no title, the second is called Soldier of Sorrow and the third is Encounters in space. You can also get 0080 War in a pocket (a six episode o.v.a. which actually takes place at late Dec 0079) and 0083 Stardust Memories which is 13 episodes (very highly recommended! It's one of my favs)and a couple of the characters ties into Zeta Gundam slightly (0087 I think).
MS eight is really COOL! I've only the first five and they are REALLY hard to find. It's really good on it's own and it's real nostalgic stuff for those who grew up on Gundam (I think it takes place at the same time as 0079 but it shows you the war on Earth and not in space).
Does anyone know how many episodes MS 8th has?
Whew! That's it for now!
is Amuro Ray the main character of the three Gundam Movies???

when i talk about power, i am referring to overall efficiency. my concept of power is not limited to only one capability such as the single-supercharged cannon you mention. instead it is an assessment of the Gundam as a whole, not to mention the capabilities of the pilot as well.
Oh and for those who don't know, the Gundam movies (0079)are actually complinations of the original TV series in three different parts and my brother recalls afew missing episodes or scenes which aren't in the "movies" (a couple of these are in some of the cinematics for the playstation games).
hey, i just finished watching two of the three gundam movies. i thought that Char Aznable was the main character, but instead he was the bad guy. well, Amuro Ray can really fight, but i was rooting for Char to win. oh well...
Hey Bleed, how's it going?
I guess Char is almost the main character in many ways but we know who the "good guy" is.
And if you haven't the seen Char's Counter-attack movie
get it!
It's the conclusion to the 0079 series and is set in 0093(or 94, not sure.)
thanks for the info jackal :D
i'll watch it as soon i returned these tapes today :)
hey i just finished watching Chars counterattack movie, and it was great :)
i just got one question though, what the hell is a Psycho Frame???
I'm not quite sure but I think it's something which enhances New Type abilities. Can anyone answer this more specifically? So what did you think of the movie (w/o giving away spoilers to those who haven't seen it).
well the movie rocks!!! and i just love NU Gundam, specially the funnels. no matter how good the girl was in the white mobile suit(i forgot its name, i think it starts with ALPHA....something)she was no match for Amuro. im a bit dissappointed though coz amuro's girlfriend died :( .
AHEM!!! (What was that I mentioned with the spoilers?)
Anyhow! Yes the little girl in Alpha Azuria (or something)
did kick some booty!
I don't know if they have Zeta Gundam at that place you go to, but get it if they do(it's a TV series). It also features Char fighting for the A.E.U.G. (which are the good guys in Zeta). Noah Bright is in it too and Amuro makes afew appearences! Before you get that though (I know, it doesn't stop) 0083:Stardust Memories is a must see if you you haven't yet(13 episode OVA).
I've only seen the first few episodes of Zeta but I've played the good PS game.
yeah 0083:Stardust Memory is the next on my list :D

Phycho frame? lets see... its the latest psychic communication technology aka psycommu (sp?) available at the time. it enhances newtype abilities and enables a newtype pilot to read/predict his opponents thoughts and movements more easily.
actually it was developed by the Zeon but was leaked by Char so that Amuro may fight at the same level w/c Char was in.
anyway, the psychoframe did have its problems as you would see in the part where the Nu gundam tries to stop the asteroid. hehe reminds me of Amuro's line... "the Nu Gundam isnt just for show"
im not sure if i missed something but i hope that clears up a bit.

I love the original Gundam! I got to see Wing tough.
thanks ryezen :)
yeah, when amuro said, "Nu Gundam isn't just for show", i thought he was gonna do something great, like self destruct for example, but he did not. oh well...
oh char was having regrets for leaking the info to amuro when he was defeated. IMO, even without the help of the Psycho Frame, the outcome of the battle would still be the same, char would still fall on the hands of amuro :D
