Samurai X is awesome, i just got the second oav yesterday :B: it's so sad though, i was crying like crazy, i kinda like rurouni kenshin the tv series better, but that doesn't mean u shouldn't get them both
Samurai X, or Rorouni Kenshin (subtitled version), is the prequel to the TV series. It shows how Kenshin got his scar and who Tomoe is and how they came to know each other. Not only is Samurai X beautifully drawn (WARNING: Samurai X is chock full of graphic slicing and dicing. If you have a weak stomach or are under 14, it is highly recomended that you do not watch these tapes! Just had to add that), full of emotion, and a great compelling story. I highly recomend this OAV,

Best Anime Ever!!! The dub isn't too shabby either (Hiko's voice is the coolest!)

Samurai X has awesome animation, great voice actors, a compelling plot, and it only takes up two DVDs/4 episodes! Gotta get those...

This is by far the best OVA series I have seen(second place being Macross Plus).
At first, I thought that 2 DVDs for 4 episodes was quite a rip-off... boy was I wrong. This is without a doubt not only my favorite anime due to the RK story, it's my favorite because it is so beautifully executed.
This visual quality of the OAV is outstanding... of all the anime I have seen, the only thing that I remember having better backgrounds is Ghost in the Shell.Seriously, some of the backrounds have greater detail than some paintings from the Rennasaince. The characters have the greatest amount of detail I have seen in any series, OAV, or movie to date. The animation is as smooth as silk and the fight scenes are excellent and realistic.
The story, is amazing. The story is nothing BUT character development. I haven't seen the RK series in it's entirety (only to ep 17), even so, out of curiousity... I looked up several characters on the Let it Burn RK fan site, and was very impressed that several characters were integrated into the OAV from the series... yet without spoiling the series at all. Snaps.
Performances? Incredibly well done, other than the story, this is probably the best aspect of the OAV. Even though it's the DVD, I just can't let myself watch it dubbed. I'd lose respect for myself... it's that good.
The musical score compliments the story and the characters very well. Several scenes were downright moving because of the score. I cried. Don't tell anyone.
I bought the OST and it is exquisite.
All in all, this is the absolutely most fantastic OVA I have seen to date. A++ work. It's worth it's weight in gold... even if it's the weight of 2 golden DVDs.
There is a disclaimer here at the end: this is -MUCH- more violent than what I have seen in the first 17 eps of the TV series. I love epic movies (Braveheart, Last of the Mohicans) that usually show the brutality of war, often in great detail. This OAV made me wince quite a few times. Know it's not for the kids.
see you space cowboys.

I've only seen the first DVD of Samurai X...and that was a while ago now...but I'm just here to say that I immediately gave it the Professor Booty seal of approval;) heh!
Err...
Philosophically/thematically it reminds me a bit of the old Japanese 'Lone wolf with cub movies' made in the 60's or 70's I can't remember the exact titles of them if anybody is wondering what the hell I'm talking about....Aussies might remember seeing them on SBS over the last cople of months...But err anyway....'dey's all good!:D
