Okay, I admit it: the easiest way to get me to buy a DVD is to put a bunch of episodes on one disc. I'm a total sucker for deals like that. I bought the first Utena DVD not becuase it was directed by the same guy who did Sailor Moon or because I had read great reviews. I bought it becuase it had seven episodes on one disc. It's a great series, and I don't regret my purchase, but the thing is whenever I see a deal like that it's hard for me to pass up. Hell, I had a hard time passing up the 9-ep Outlaw Star DVD and I already kenw i didn't like the series.

Where do the saber marrionetes come in? There is now a 9-ep dvd available. I know it has Megumi Hayasibara, i know I love the opening theme, and I know the general plot. But is it actually any good? What's the tone like? Is it Fushigi Yugi or Slayers? Oh yeah, one more question: is the whole sexaroid thing really as corny as it sounds?

9 episode DVD - great!
how many episodes in total (how many DVD's in total)?

I'm assuming three DVDs, although I found out that the package actually contains the nine episodes on two DVDs, so I guess that means 6 dvds in total. Still a great deal. But is the series any good?

I haven;t seen the other series in the Saber Marrionette line ("Saber Marrionette R" and "Saber Marrionette J Again"), but I do have the "Saber Marrionette J" series on VHS and I for one loved it.

It basically feels like a cross between Slayers and Tenchi Muyo, only with a lot more action (Kind of like the last few episodes of Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe.)

The sexdroid thing is not that corny since all androids aren't really sex bots, they are simply the servents of their society. In fact, if memory serves, you actually get made fun of if you consider doing the deed with an android in their culture.

The characters are interesting, and the main character;s rival in the first episode somewhat reminds me of James (Of Team Rocket) with an attitude problem so I laughed my ass off at that.

I honestly enjoyed the series because I loved anime comedy, and I am a sucker for romance and the "Exotic Girlfriend" genre in general.

If you liked Tenchi, then you will probably like Saber Marrionette J.

It has comedy, touching moments, and action, and it seems to do it all well. It can move kind of slow at times, but it was well worth getting.

Heck, I bought it on VHS when it first came out, subbed. That's something like 200.00 US for all 8 volumes (25 episodes overall.) and I still don't regret buying it, so if you can get the series on DVD for around 100.00 (Figure 3 2-DVD sets at 40.00 each.) then I strongly, strongly recommened the series.

I cannot gurantee you will like it, heck no one can gurantee things like that, but I urge you, if you give any anime a chance to see if you like it, definately try this one, I plead of you. ;);)

Sabre Marionette J is GOOD. However, the best attitude to adopt before watching it is an unprejudiced one, that is, to temporarily abandon your own views on gender, society, elements of other anime, and completely immerse yourself in the wonderfully surreal world of Terra 2.

Don't to this, and you will overanalyse it as an overtly mysogynistic copy of Tenchi Muyo.

Let go, however, and you will be drawn into a compelling social fable of love and humanity that is sometimes funny, sometimes chilling, often poignant, and always unforgettable.

I thought it was good. But i havent watched Saber Marionette J again or the one after that though. But i thought it was funny because of the gay guy....AKA the comedy relief guy.

Hangata if absolutely hilarious. While I liked Saber Marionette J, I like the OVA (Saber Marionette J Again) even better. SMJ has a good mix of comedy and drama. Its something that should be at least watched ya know?

Hello all, my first post on this board...
SMJ is a great series, in my opinion. It has a lot of action and comedy at the beginning, and althought there seem to be a few "filler" episodes, the plot toward the end is interesting and I cry every time I see them heading for the Mesopotamia.
I liked Saber Marionette R too, although it was much darker than J in a lot of ways. The characters are cute but it would have been sort of neat to see it tied in with the plot behind J a little more (but perhaps R came out first- I don't actually know).
Saber Marionette J Again was sort of cute but I pretty much hated Marine and the plot doesn' t have the depth of SMJ - as a shorter series (OVA) maybe it doesn't have the time, but I still didn't like it much.
Saber Marionette J to X has not been released in the U.S. yet to my knowledge- I have been waiting for it because some of what I have heard about it sounds very interesting plot wise - basically the Marionettes start living like real people in a new world (to explain why the new world is different would be a major spoiler for SMJ so I won't). It seems like they are finding a lot of ways to develop the characters more and although I don't like the style of the art very much (I loved it in SMJ) I really want to watch it.

hanagata is sooo funny. he's the voice of hotohori from fushigi yuugi. ah... only that makes it worth while. *faints*

plus, the marionettes are great.

SMJ has the best comic relief moments. definetely worth watching.
