alright, I remember watching Robotech when I was a little kid in the 80's. I usually hear people associate Macross and Robotech in the same way. What exactly in Macross and what does it have to do with Robotech. and why does everyone have an Elvis haircut in Robotech.
First there was Robotech. Then it changed its name to Macross......
Now there are several series of Macross.
And they're all good :)
And abotu the haircuts? well thats like asking why in starbalzers they were those disco pants.
It simply was cool at the time, well sort of.

I don't know for sure, but personally i think Macross is the earlier version of ROBOTECH. Macross is in Japanese while ROBOTECH is in english. Macross is the first generation of ROBOTECH followed by second gen. the Southern Cross(i think, where Max Sterling's daughter is the heroine) and third gen. the Invid Invasion (Mospeada in Japanese version).

What? I beat Magnus9 to this post?? ...he'll be so jelous, Robotech is his love :D
Robotech is a collection of three totally unrelated Animes from Japan, that were taken and re-dubbed in english so that they BECAME connected. Macross is the first series, Southern Cross is the second, and Mospeada is the third.
Just like Planeswalker9 said.
Macross is anime legend and for me personally (as stated many times) I dislike Robotech for how they butchered the some of the story in the "Macross saga" to compensate for robotech. And I saw Macross before Robotech so I'm biased in that sense. And Ikaru/Rick Hunters' hair is your typical early 80's "cool" side- burnish-messy-anime look:D!

Robotech is the epitome of all that can be wrong when anime is translated. Robotech is not anime, it's americanized, hack edited crap and to support it is to support the jack-asses who made it, those loveable folk who have done their best to keep Macross out of the US so people cannot see it and realize how much better it is than Robotech and thus dump Robotech infavor it.

Where is the love, brother?? :) You can have your Macross and still like Robotech, it IS ok, you know....
Consider this before slamming Robotech: If not for Robotech, THOUSANDS of rabid Anime fans would not have become fans at all, or would not have become fans until much later.
Sure the original is better, but Robotech made people WANT to find the original, which they may not have had the inclination to do if it had not been so Frickin' cool.
So give Robotech it's due, it gave a LOT of fans their start (including me.... Robotech was my first Anime --- and I'll call it Anime no matter what you say ;)), plus you have to admire anyone that can take three completely unrelated stories and make it seem like one.

Sorry to sound like a stark raving otaku, but Robotech is like a button for me I guess. I mean yeah, something positive came of it in the amount of fans it brought to real anime, but it is just too much of a symbol of what happens when you Americanize something to the point that it stops being what it once was entriely. Yeah, DBZ is badly edited, so is Sailor Moon, but I mean they made Macross and the others whole new shows entreily. That is not something to be impressed by, that's sickening. That is the total rape of an artist's intentions and work. Would you think it would be impressive if someone ripped up a work of art you put your heart and soul in until it was unrecognizeable then did the same to your fellow artists and then spliced it all back together as something that is nothing like the original and then take credit for having created the whole thing?
I would hope not.
I honestly have no problem with Robotech fans, but I do question their convictions and integrity because to be a fan of something that is the total lack of respect for an artist's work is just appaling to me.
Robotech is just like some big lie to me and I cannot help it.

More times than not I would have to agree with Otaku-sama in that Americanization does mess things up... But, I sort of have this special place in my heart for Robotech because, like a lot of people, it was one of my first animes.
That said, Planeswalker is right about the differences between robotech and macross. The one thing I would add is that Robotech had this weird thing with Robotech 2 the sentinels which was the newest but never completed series (I think only 4 episodes were made) that was supposed to bridge the gap of twenty years between the macross saga and southern cross. And here Rick marries Lisa and Minmei sings at their wedding.
while the macross series goes straight to macross plus and then splits into two parallel worlds (macross II and Macross VII I think).

Macross, Macross Plus and Macross 7 are all in the same reality.
The only one that is in a parallel universe is Macross 2.

Someone mentioned that there would be a sequel to Macross Plus in another thread, but I haven't heard anything else about it. The newest is Macross 7 but I haven't seen it. It hasn't been released in the US but I don't know about Aust.

on showtime B, they showed these episodes of macross plus where there is this ace pilot and he is going at it with this real hard ass in a testing base. What is the deal with this. how many eps. where does it lie in the Mac. universe?

You get Showtime Beyond!! That's like one of the few channels I don't get :bawling: .
That ace pilot would be none other than Isamu Dyson! The hard ass is Guld Boa Bowman. That's Macross Plus alright. There are 4 episodes in the OVA and one movie. The movie presents the story in a more dramatic way with scenes that aren't shown in the OVA. The movie titled simply Macross Plus: The Movie is only available on VHS and is subtitled only but it is definitely worth seeing!
As far as when it happens in the Macross universe, it is about 40 to 50 years after Macross DYRL, being a sequel to the movie and not the series. Macross II: Lovers Again is in an alternate timeline and doesn't directly have anything to do with Plus or DYRL. As far as Macross 7, I haven't seen that one but I think it's concurrent with Plus.
