After working together to combine the angelic intellectual power of Rei Ayanami, the experience and infinite, omnipotent genius of Lain Iwakura, and whatever positive traits I have, the three of us have developed a theory.

*shrug* Let us move on to the final theory we've laid out.

We think Lain exists within infinity and from infinity she can access any point in history. This may be a bit confusing so we're trying to explain this as clearly as possible.
In order to explain this theory, a few terms and working diagrams have to be worked out.
First of all let’s start with history. History can be defined as a collection of events along a linear timeline that has a beginning and an end. This corresponds to the explanation of history given in layer05: distortion where the Mask says, "History is not just a collection of independent points which were passed by. The lines were connected by someone, in fact they were forced to connect." Implying that history is a collection of points that are connected by a linear line.
Therefore if we visualize history onto a diagram it would be it this, a number of points or events connected by a line with starting and ending points.

Next we have to find someway to visualize the unvisualizable: infinity.
Infinity as a time concept is very hard to picture simply because infinity when applied to time postulates no ‘before’ and no ‘after’ therefore no past and no future, only an endless NOW. This NOW is both a single point of time and ALL time wrapped into one. This ‘point’ can also be thought of as a single ‘state’, as in infinity there can be no change of this state because any change to this state will imply a past and a future which CANNOT exist in infinity. Anything existing within infinity will thus not change its state, this explains Lain’s always existing in her child form and never growing older.
For the purposes of this argument think of infinity as the following: a single point with no point coming either before or after it. I don't really need to make a diagram of a point, do I???? Anyway, let's place this next to the earlier diagram of ‘history’.

However since by the very definition of infinity it EXISTS before the beginning of history and also exists forever, therefore meaning it exists long before history began and exists long after history ends, thus rendering the above diagram inaccurate.
Therefore let us stretch the single point of infinity out into a line to demonstrate its infinite existence

Infinity stretching out Ad Infinitum
Remember that this line is still a single point or state, think of it as the point dragged along indefinitely into the past and the future so that it forms a single line, like when you drag the single point of your pencil along a piece of paper it becomes a long line but the effective drawing edge of the pencil is still a point.
Next envision that transferring between history and infinity is possible. Since infinity exists as a single state no matter what occurs in history, anything existing in infinity will be able to cross into any point in history since the single point of infinity exists alongside all points of history.

Therefore if Lain exists in infinity she can then access any event in the past, present and future and since because she exists in infinity her form will never change (because there is only a single 'state' in infinity) this explains why in the final scene where she can visit a now adult Alice yet her own form is still her original child-like one.

Urm, yes. Moving on, this also explains why there appears text in layer 13 that states, "There are just not memories of the past. There are also memories of today and tomorrow." Because of her existing in infinity Lain can have access to and will thus have memories of everything event in time, every event in the past, present and the future.

All this gives the final words Lain says to the viewer, "I'm here. So I will always be with you. Always." a whole new meaning. Basically because she exists in infinity and can cross over into any single point in history she will 'always be with us'.
