Hello again, I'm sure many of you have read posts by me similar to this: I'm an anime newbie, is Nadesico worth buying? I like watching/buying series. Should this be one of the next series I start to collect?

i haven't seen it either but read the synopsis and summaries and it's on my wish list :D
yes it's worth seeing because it's a great series. but is it worth buying? I'm buying the dvds because i love the series, but i HATE what adv has done to it with their HORRIBLE looking overlays. It really ticks me off some of the stuff they did to the series. But you take the good with the bad i guess.

I think you should buy it. I have the ADV VHS and they have great definition, great translation... I love them.

My philosophy is that you should never buy something you haven't watched first (then you can't come back and blame us if you don't like it and are out many $$$ ;))
I would STRONGLY recommend renting it first, to see if you like it. Personally, I like it, and I plan to buy it.... but you might not like the same things I do. Know what I mean?
Rent first, and you'll never regret buying..... :)
Yer, randoml337 has the idea, always try before you buy...
But I personally reccommend this series... it's just damn good.

yes...definitely rent (or download online) before buying the series...people here have the right idea.
although i think nadesico is one of the best animes out there, not everything is for everyone. you may not like it, and i would hate to see someone spend money on something that they don't end up liking. buying american dvd's (as you know) can be totally expensive, so definitely introduce yourself to the series before committing a lot of money to it.
personally...i would stongly recommend giving it a try, it is really good and totally worth seeing. i don't think you could really go wrong with it...hope this helps!

If you must see Nadesico (which is one of my personal favorites), watch it SUBTITLED! The original Japanese is hilarious, and really cannot be done the same in English. There's something about the voices that's just too funny, and you'll lose a lot if you watch the dub.
Also, I recommend the DVD. Better visual quality and sound, as well as better value overall (both subtitled and dubbed). Definitely go for it.
better video quality for dvd: yes.
drawback for dvd: overlays.
you people will get used to me complain about the nadesico overlays a lot. :D horribly horribly done.
I don't really have a big problem with the overlays. I mean, I can't read Japanese so I don't know how they let you know the information on the screen without it I guess they could put it in as a subtitle, but then if you are watching it subtitled, they couldn't get all the info in. IMO it is an acceptable compromise.
i understand WHY they did the overlays, and to a certain extent, i accept them. my beefs with them are that
1) they seem WAY too obvious and almost "unprofessional looking." I mean, in BGC 2040, I heard there are overlays as well. I'm STILL looking for them ... they were done that well. Now, the SAME company (ADV) does Nadesico, and the overlays are just horrible. It's like they got some 14 year old kid, plucked him in front of photoshop 5, and told him to do words with shadow effects.
2) the "hard subs" : they look very messy at times. they are sometimes just plucked right on top of something regardless of whether or not the thing they're covering is important. Also, i think on disc 3 or 4 was when there were hard jap subs, and the hard english sub was just above it, and combined with the soft english subs, it was just a horrible jumbled mess.
If it wasn't for the fact that I really like this series, I would not have bought the discs. And if I had, i'd burn them in a second. :)

I can see your point, they could have done a better job, I haven't seen BGC 2040, but in NGE, they did a pretty good job IMO. They could have made them smaller, or with a different font.

I know the scene, it is when they are meeting with the UN and Yurika is on the overhead screen, trying to speak in English. Yes, that is a mess, although I guess they did the best they could?!?!?!?
I guess that they could be better, but I chose to ignore them. I always attribute stuff like the overlays as a nessesary evil in watching anime.

Lets get back to the subject. I would like to know who is the director, if its funny like trigun or deep like evangelion, where is it stage and in which time(past future or present)? Fantasy, scy-fi or just ordinary days life?
The director is Tatsuo Sato,
It is set in the future, with the story revolving around a Space Battleship, The Nadesico, and her crew. They are actually a private ship, they are not part of the military and they set off to rescue marooned settlers on Mars. The plot changes as the story goes on but that is how it starts at least.
Series is 26 eps long with an OVA movie, Prince of Darkness.
Those are the facts, now for one persons opinion:
The series is very funny, although you need to be familiar with other anime to fully appriciate all the inside jokes. They basically take concepts from other anime series and spoof them. Now if that was the whole series, I don't think it would be too good. There is a decent plot to hold everything together, and although the story does tend to jump around a little, it flows along OK. There is a love pentagon involving the lead pilot and the capt, another pilot, the communications officer, a scientist, some woman on a beach, and probably others, I'm only half through the series. There are some nice moments, both funny and serious, developed from this tangled love life. It's not deep like Eva, but I will admit that it is a nice change of pace when I want to just watch something without making 200 mental notes.
Unfortunately, this is a love it or hate it series, some people are quite turned off by the humor, and frankly if you don't like the humor, then there isn't much else. I love the humor, and I haven't seen too many people say they didn't like it so I would say give it a chance.
