Why Did Foz cancel Escaflowne?

God only knows... Maybe they got complaints from parents, maybe it wasn't pulling in the viewers (cause they BUTCHERED it! Hitomi is the main character dammit! Not Van!). Who knows why networks do anything. Still, I weep for the next generation if they liked NASCAR racers better than Escaflowne.

They wrecked the show anyway, so who cares if it was cancelled. You're not seeing Escaflowne anyway, you're seeing a jumbled set of clips from escaflowne mashed together with the wrong music and all the blood edited out.

I believe it was because they couldnt edit most of the end parts of escaflowne without totally redoing the story. So they just gave up. Makes you wonder why they started showing it in the first place.

I think they messed up in a few areas:
1.) They had to cut so many episodes together they realized instead of 26 (it's 26 right?) episodes they were going to have about a baker's dozen.
2.) There's some gory things you just can't cut out without mangling the plot.
3.) From what I heard it was too "slow moving" for kids. Well duh, if you chop the plot to bits then of course it'll be disjointed and irritating.
If you really want to see the full thing in its unadulterated glory just buy the VCD's of Ebay. English subtitles, no cuts, dirt cheap, all the episodes. That's what I gave up and did.

actually, when you compare Esca to most other animes, the violence isn't even that bad. *SPOILERS* Maybe tone down the fight in episode 14, and then again when Folken slices Dornkirk in half, *END SPOILERS* but outside of that the most you get is maybe a little blood when someone gets wounded. Compared to stuff like Eva, or Outlaw Star, Esca's nothing.

Escaflowne was cancelled because it got poor ratings. Of course, this is not surprising, since FOX

a) Gave it a Saturday morning time slot, but no weekday time slot. NEVER show a program you are aiming at kids only one day out of the week. It is impossible to capture an audience that way.

b) Pissed off a lot of anime fans with the cuts they made, so they lost their teenage audience.

c) Didn't hire someone to dub over Brain Drummond's Allen and Andrew Francis's Dilandau (I still have nightmares about that).

Fortunately, they still show it here in Canada so I get to watch the really bad dubbed version... I probably wouldn't watch it though if I hadn't already seen the subbed version before because the version they show is really badly edited and dubbed... Plus I hate the music they used to replace Yoko Kanno's soundtrack...

From what I've heard, it is also due to the fact that no one watches it at all... People are actually closign the tv or switching channels when Escaflowne comes on...

Now Fox is going to try it's hand at Slayers... I'm scared of all the comedy scenes and the such that are going to be butchered away fro mthe series.. Some examples are like Naga's comparisons between Her chest and Lina's and stuff...

Fox should either show anime the way it is... or not show it at all.

Yeah, edited anime sucks the big one..
But some of my teenage friends think it's gay!
They say it's dumb and boring!
shows just how much attention they pay to TV when they watch it!
Me however, hate the dubbed version after seeing the real stuff.
I can't believe they would go over the original score!
And they only made 22 dubbed eps, they cut out the entire ep. 14 and they cut out almost all of the first ep!!!
What is wrong wiht FOX? we ask, well, nothing, it's the censors and time slotty ppl that are messed up!
Damn censors! Even Card Captors has been butchered beyond repair!
They didnt even start with the FIRST ep! they started like already through the series!
I only know what happened in the first like 10 eps by watching the crappy opening credits!

It's a difference of opinion on what makes a TV program (anime or not) "good" to some people. Since the US is still largely ignorant of anime, showing one with the horrible time slot/edits/voices like FOX did didn't help things....

yea i agree that animes that have been hacked at are crappy....but still i find it hard to find anime on DVD or VHS or basically any anime.... :( but lately i've been finding some mangas :) (i'll stop now)
