I was just thinking about them,including the sister. How were these people chosen to play the parts? All of the people seemed pretty messed up,like the mom. Who were the people that chose the parents for Lain? was it the MIB?
see you space cowboys.

I'm pretty sure they were chosen by the people who hired the MiB, Tachibana Labs. They didn't need to really act like parents, they just needed to give Lain the outward appearance of having a family.

Could Eiri have played a part? I can see Tachibana doing something like that, but did they know about Lain before the MiB showed up the first time in the series?

Not only did they know about her, the were responisble for giving her a physical body. Remember that one line about Tachibana Labs discovering how to artificially make RNA or something similar.

Damn. Gotta watch them again...so do you think the MiB were ever outside her house before she noticed them? Obviously, Arisu noticed them, but her parents didn't seem like they would care.

They've probably been monitoring her ever since she was released into the real world. She never noticed before becuase she didn't pay attention to much of anything. In a way it was the suicicde of her classmate that got everything rolling.

her mom's definitely fucked. she seemed afraid to 'love Lain' thru the entire series as though she KNEW what was to happen. hell. they definitely knew.. i recall them on the sofa mentioning that they should have sex one last time while they still can. while they still CAN? i suppose they weren't human in the first place.
Mika {Lain's sister} was clearly her Profet. Mika was to 'fulfill the prophecy' so that the Knights could...................? hmmm... or maybe Mika was a Protocol representation of the Lain. perhaps she was only a testing application.. perhaps a failed one. but she was living with the family long before Lain was {clearly} seeing as she's not only a few to 5years older than Lain. also, she was there before Lain arrived {assuming that info was accurate}
so now why were they chosen? i believe they were made. Lain made them for her made self. Lain made Lain. Lain made family. Lain destroyed family Lain destroyed Lain.
Eiri was only trying to gain credit as well as Tachibana Labs. everyone just wanted credit for the fact that Lain lives and they think she must have arrived from somewhere. everyone's trying to find an answer rather than accept the truth that Lain simply IS.
and in the end... i believe that Lain's father is her visionary interpretation of GOD.

I don't recall a scene like that...I think there was one where they were sitting somewhat intimately near the late middle third of the show, looking at the ceiling (as though they were looking at the floor of Lain's room) and the mother saying it was almost over...the only scenes where I remember anything having to do with sex would be Lain's peeping-tom double and the scene with Mika and her male friend.

Do you think Lain also had a hand in Chisa's death somehow? How would Chisa have discovered the Wired?

i don't know.. Chisa is the largest mistery to me... i can't find any connection. what i find most interesting is when Lain realizes that she and Chisa never actually walked home together. hmmmm...

Ahh, the track 44 part. I see. :)
A mother that seems to give less than a ---- about Lain, and makes generic motherly comments about the girls coming in on time or staying out late. A father that seems to care, but won't interfere. He also encourages Lain to become more computer-literate. A sister whose mental capacity slowly erodes the longer Lain realizes herself, yet starts out as one of the more lucid and "normal" people in the series...a smart-aleck. I don't see a connection yet...
