A really dumb Chichiri question

What the heck does No Da mean? I know in the dubs Chichiri's catch phrase was "Ya know?" but then I switched to fansubs and they didn't translate any of the "No Da's". So is that an accurate translation then? Whatever it is it drives me up the wall.

No da does have a meaning, but not in the way Chirchiri uses it. For Chirchiri its simply a speech affectation, like you know, but much cooler. I suppose the only reason they used you know is because it has the same number of sylables. Still it makes Chirichiri look like some guy from the Valley. In general usage, No da can mean because of this or is thus. However since my Dictionary has gone AWOL this is not definitive. Hope this helps.

So far as I know, 'No da' is just a way of giving a sentence more emphasis. For Chichiri, it just a manner of speech. Like Kenshin and 'De gozaru.' 'You know' isn't really the correct translation, but there is no translation to English that makes sense. Best to just accept it.

Ok, I heard somewhere that it was a shortened form of the phrase "n desu" (or something like that), and that basically means "as it is", I think... Don't remember where I heard that.... Animerica Extra calls it a "verbal exclamation mark"

Ahh my favorite Seishi.....well I'll try.....
Lets first dissect no da.....starting with the no.....basically in japanese they use n as an emphasis on something but the proper and longer version of that is na no.....so n=na no.....da means to be....so if you were to use this in a sentence....
Yui wa totemo kirei na no da........which means Yui is VERY pretty.....the da means she is(or to be) and the na no is the emphasis. But chichiri doesn't use it in that context and says it so much there isn't a translation for it. It's a cute little thing and even Watase-sama has said it doesn't mean anything....

While we're on the subject of chichiri's different talk....lets talk about how he says I....the different ways to say I are:
watashi-which is formal and is used by Hotohori-sama and Nakago-sama
boku-which is polite and used by Chiriko
atashi-it's the female way to say I used by Nuriko and Miaka
ore-the male way to say I and is used by Tamahome, Tasuki and Mitsukake.
Chichiri uses oira.....again that has no translation into english....he does however stop using oira in manga 17 and uses ore. And I also think sometimes when he's serious he stops using oira.

DAAA!!!.....speaking of which....that again has no translation and you just have to listen to his voice to see how he uses it....when he dissapears he'll say DA!*happily* or if he gets hit he'll say DAAAA*kinda painfully* The confusing part is sometimes he uses na no da as one sentence.....*sigh*...Chichiri...is just Chichiri....thats the best explanation......but common....it is kinda catchy no da! *snickers* I say da wayyy to much for my own good....^_^ If it's for Chichiri it's ok ne?
