This is the Club where kids go to hang out and "have fun."
I Also foound out that there is a title of the same name of a book by Douglas Rushkoff (1994), describing various cyber-cultures and their philosophies, as well as discussing notions of an evolving Global/Gaian Brain (such as described by James Lovelock and Peter Russell), of which humans are the neurons.
For those who are unaware of connection, or who are forced to connect against their will: Cyberia->Siberia->feelings of coldness, isolation, being lost.
In serial experiments lain, people go to Cyberia to be with others, but the "connection" can be impersonal, distant, or "cold," as well as disorienting. Cyberia equals condition of cyber equals state of communication between technology and human (which can be lacking in warmth).
[Taken from Lawrence Eng's site at thought experiments lain (http://www.cjas.org/~leng/lain.htm)
Jordan, please give credit or at least links to the sites you use information from. If gaspacho soup hadn't noted that, we would have missed out on a great Lain site.]
On the other hand, those who willingly go to Cyberia and are aware of their connectedness are more likley to be well-adjusted Cyberians like Taro and da' gang. Cyberia seems like an excape for people to do what they want and excape the harshness of the "real world".
That's the reason for the hardcore music, the drugs, and the overall energy of this place. Some people at Cyberia seem lost and confused like that one guy who was taking Accela.
well, that's what I think anyway.
see you space cowboys.

Very cool...I must look into that book.
Humans (neurons) of the planet (brain)? Damn, there's plently of imagery in the series to back that up. But there's a book written in '94 that describes it...and it has the same name as the club. That can't be a coincidence...
[reading into this too much]
Maybe the creators are trying to draw an analogy between "opening" the book (mind) to the new communication and "opening" yourself to new people. Like introducing yourself to people the old-fashioned way is the first step to understanding instant mass communications...

Humans {neurons} of the planet {brain}.....
..just as i was stating earlier in a thread talking about the refference to EMP in Lain. i believe it's LOVE when Lain sees LAINsmall as the Alien.... also in this episode, they give a reference to the Earth's EMP and the theory that once the population of Humans on the Planet reaches the amount of Neurons in the Brain, are are all electronically connected on a network of information {via the Wired, perhaps?} then we will create a new conscious.... create GOD maybe?
who knows. but it's a definite theory... and they mention it much more than once. damn, i need to find and read that book.. i find it even more creepy that THIS MUCH is 'connecting' {so to speak :heh:}
another small note: in each episode, there are changes being made. assuming these changes are the same week going over and over {in another previous theory of mine}.... hinse the "Present Day. Present Time." happening in the same day at the same time of each episode {with the excetion of EGO} then it's interesting to note that the only things that are CONSTANT in each episode are Chisa's death, and anything that goes on in Cyberia. until the final episode when the world is at piece with Lain not existing as nothing {rather than not existing as the Watcher in the VERY end} and Cyberia is finally "boring" to Taro and Myu-Myu. perhaps there is a connection here as well.
..hhmmm... just a thought^^

Ok, let's step back and look at Cyberia.
It's a popular night spot. People of all ages go there. Lain of the Wired is well-known at the club...she must visit often. Accela is available. Out of the two suicides in the series, one happens there. The club starts out as the place to be, yet near the end of the series, the Taro Gang becomes bored with the place. Cyberia isn't mentioned after Lain's final memory cleansing.
The name is obviously computer-related. Cyber is usually used to denote computer- or digital-something. The -ia gives it a geographical significance since there are many places and countries around the world that end in -ia or -a. Maybe an underground gathering spot for the Knights before Lain become known/made herself known/became common knowledge? Maybe they ditched it after their power grew and it became too popular...but they left behind a spot known for it's appeal and dark side. Possibly like a real-world portal, a first step to becoming closer to the Wired.
[pure speculation]
Bigshot J mentioned the Cyberia-Siberia angle. The cold reality of computing and the cold reality of the frozen Russian province. The initial isolation of the computing world from "real life" and the initial isolation of the province from the rest of the world. However, being isolated isn't always a bad thing. It allows you to develop your ideas and plans independantly of outside interference. The people that live in such places will be a closely-knit community...hackers and the hardy souls who attempt to live in a place where humans don't belong.

well that certainly explains why Jordan has no further comments on this topic... he's too busy searching for more to plagairize on in.
learned his lesson my ass.
eitherway... for a direct link, you could go here.. http://www.cjas.org/~leng/lain.htm#cyberia
Jordan, all you have to do is say that you AGREE with "this person's" ideas on Cyberia and quote it and link to where you got it from.. it's not that difficult.
to any Mod who has seen Lain and has abilities to Edit posts ::it would be kind of you to Edit Jordan's post giving credit to "Lawrence Eng" the person who it appears Jordan has plagairized.

by the way, if Lawrence Eng ever sees this, wonderful site!
Edit ::DAMN! this guy's done so much research!!!! many of my own theories which he shares have been described better than i could ever imagine!!!
everyone!! check out that site!!
::glares at Jordan for plagairizing it rather than sharing it's URL::
