As anime gets more popular I seem to find that there are a lot of these "snob" type "fans". They always complain how some anime are all crap because of this or that. This is beginning to get to me considering the fact that majority of these guys got into anime just a few years ago and wouldn't have a clue of what was even going on in these anime without the dubbing or subbing. So they go watch some fansubbed stuff from their little "anime clubs" and go around all high and mighty telling people this is crap and that's overdone etc. Some of this "bitching" was a little cute when it began, but now it's nothing more than a load of pretentious a-hole whining and it's getting really old. Some of us do watch and enjoy a lot of this 'crap' and would appreciate less whining from some annoying prick who needs to keep up an air of pretentiousness around him/herself.

I liked it. I loved it's style and damn.......It has some great mecha battles. I'm just biased for retro-styled anime like Cowboy Bebop and Giant Robo though.

I liked what I have seen so far. Although I think there may be other series better than this, Big O is definately worth watching. The animation style is different from others I've seen, but it works for me.

Hmm, I've yet to render judgement on the show. The plot idea seems intriguing ** the whole thing how the city is suffering from amnesia** I've seen several hints of that so far. Depending on which way they go with it, the plot may become very interesting.

i think that the show is pretty good. it sounds like the voice is the same voice that did spike. it is very close to being like cowboy bebop. it is written okey, but i like watching the drawings. they are pretty good.

Man, the show just started three days ago. Give it some time. I'm also sick of hearing anime fans bitch about a show for no reason.:( It's illogical, people whine about this and that, anime isn't accepted by the mainstream, the voice actors suck, bla bla bla. Then you get a program like toonami that's trying their very best to slowly introduce anime in America and give it more esteem and no one even gives them a chance.:mad: They just bitch about more tiny little details like OH MY GOD, THEY CUT THREE MILLISECONDS OFF GOHANS TRANSFORMATION or, I can't believe it they said tea instead of saki, blasphemy. This is just stupid, it seems like a lot of anime fans are just a bunch of loosers who got nothing better to do than pretend their special because they watch PERFECT, subtitled(of course), anime. That's my opinion and if anyone wants to debate it I would be glad to.

Well, I have seen the first 13 eps and I like the show. The plot is good and it really begins to pick up in the next couple of episodes. There is alot going on in the show and it gets revealed slowly but surely.
I do have to agree, it is strange how they don't seem to care that the city gets ruined all the time, although they are hinting that the amnesia (sp) has alot to do with the attitude in the city.
Give it a chance, its not NGE but its not Pokemon either.

This show is really cool. The animation is one of the best I've seen. It's smooth and clear. Also they have eva sound effects in it. And the Dorothy chick is like Rei. So having a little bit of "eva" is a plus. The story seems very cool and so do the designs. Does anyone know how long this series is?

Ugh, Dorothy a hot chick?!?! Maybe if she had a normal skin tone. She's not even albino, her skin is metallic grey for heavan's sake and her face has no expression on it whatsoever.

I think her big sister, Dorothy 1 looks better than she does :lol:

Well toonami is getting two more gundam series soon so watch out. Plus that Candidate Goddess watchamuhcallit show has mechs too, so everything coming to toonami has mechs in it...

Its cool, but the one thing that annoys me (not to be bitchy but...) is that it looks to much like Batman and is not detailed enough. The cahracter's fingers look silly. One more thing, they could have made the robots faces look so much better. Theyre heads and bodies are awesome but not there face.
It reminds me of the 1950's for some reason. Other than that its really interesting.

My roomie and I just started watching Big-O on Toonami. (yeah I know Toonami is the abomination of all anime but it's all we have right now). The series grew on both of us except neither of us actually like the Big-O part of the series...the minute that stupid mech comes out of the ground is when we hit the fastforward button. :p At any rate, the plot doesn't seem too shabby and we both get a kick out of Dorothy. I'll have to watch some more before I go making any judgement calls on it.

Btw, that *IS* the American VA for Spike from Cowboy Bebop doing the main character's voice, isn't it?

The Big O isn't that bad at all... (I think I like Outlaw Star better though....) I've only seen one ep so far though it was the one about electric city..... The old man there kind of sounded like that old OutLaw (the one who looked like a pirate) in OLS ep 16.(I'm not saying it was a ripoff just commenting that the two sort of sounded alike) I didn't see a lot of it.. But I'll try to catch it on Monday.....

Never seen it, which isn't too surprising since I only have basic cable, so I don't get to see what's on Toonami. (Which I can't tell is a good thing or a bad thing sometimes...) But now that you've all gotten me curious, I guess I'm going to have to hunt down some websites on it and find out what you're talking about...

I liked it a lot in fact. I can't wait till they finish it...because frankly they left it at the stinking climax...how aggrivating. Especially since you know 'Angel' and what's his corporate face knows something. Anyway most people I've talked to hate it for one simple fact...'it's too much like Batman!'...I say 'so?' isn't every Gundam much like the Gundam that preceeded it? Besides the simliarities to Batman, well to me, are really only in some actions they do and the over all mood. I've always loved anime for it's stories...it's not some pillowed Disney crap...you bet blood, love, betrayal, and basically a plot! (well in some animes at least) Frankly Big O didn't dissapoint me. In fact one of the main reasons I did like it was because it was like every other anime I've seen. If you get the same stuff over and over it loses it's effect...and this is definately not your average anime...even with it's tire related name.

YES ROGER IS VOICED BY DAVID LUCAS WHO ALSO DID SPIKE IN CB! THEY'RE DONE BY THE SAME DUBBING COMPANY FOR CRISSAKES!

You may notice that alot of the VAs in bandai's (and other companies) are used again for different shows. Did you know that Wendee Lee (aka. Faye Valentine from CB and Suzuka form OS) does Angel (the hot blonde chick)? Or that Beck (the guy in the gold suit that kidnaps Dorothy)'s VA (his name escapes me right now) did Gene in Outlaw Star? It's true! Get used to it! I love when familiar VAs do other anime that I watch!

Oh and by the way...Big O is good. It is very good.

I have to admit that at first I did not like Big O. The main reason was because of the robot. After a few episodes, I started to get into the story and I really like it now. I just wish they had made more epistodes.

Well, I'd have to agree with you and Darkside. I'd also like to comment on an earlier respondant who said:

It is unfortunate that there are only 13 episodes of Big-O, but boy do they give you alot to try to work out on your own...

But why is everyone so down on Toonami? Toonami ROCKS! The only Anime on TV otherwise is the occasional Galaxy Express 999 on some random station, or Pokemon and CardCaptors...
And look at the editing on Big-O compared to CardCaptors, they were very true to the original from looking at the edit lists online!
Cardcaptors, on the other hand, you can tell without knowing a thing about the original (which I didn't) that it is hacked to bits.

True, some of the edit jobs shown on Toonami aren't great, and it would be nice to see them shuffling in some other series, but unfortunately with the purchase of Cartoon Network (or trade, or whatever), things are looking down :(

and Powerpuff Girls RULE!

As for Snobbery, yes, there is alot of that. Oh well, I scoff in their general direction... SCOFF SCOFF! Heck, I didn't like Cowboy Beebop when I saw the first few episodes of it, but my girlfriend loves it! I think I just thought the main character was a d&#* when I saw it. And think, most of us are Anime newbies, no matter HOW much we've seen. I'm only 25, therefore I'm too young to be an Anime Elder, I wasn't old enough to watch the old series when they were new, nor was I in the right country for that matter! So unless you're a 50 year old from Japan, suck it up! I remember watching Anime when it was called Japanimation, though I can sure see what THAT name went away!
Heck, I remember seeing "Warriors of the Wind" years ago (probably about 12 years ago? Thats just a guess), and LOVED it, best thing I'd ever seen! Of course at 13 there's no way I would have ever HEARD of the original, more or less been able to get my hands on a copy to see it. It was a good 8 years later I started reading all these message boards saying "Don't watch Warriors of the Wind, it's horrible, skip it entirely if you can't see the original!" BAH! If you can't get the original, watch WotW anyway! Sure it SKIPS one of the most important scenes in the movie, but hey, figure it out yourself! :)

I’d just like to say something I said in another thread:

I don’t think Cartoon Network bashers are being totally objective. Ok, ok, before you start declaring be a blasphemous sinner and start raving about how it is a crime to watch dubbed, cut, and/or edited, versions of anime (e.g Toonami), let me point out two things:

1. Anime is expensive to buy, especially if you intend to collect an entire series.
2. Anime in its original format is often hard to find to rent, especially in smaller cities.

For lots of people, TV is their first exposure to Anime, and it’s often their only affordable source, especially for the younger, poorer crowd (i.e. college students). Sure, fansubs and private collector’s copies are sold at a lower cost on the internet, but even those start to add up to a substantial amount of moola. Besides, it gives fans, both newbie and “otaku”, the chance to preview a title before investing a wad o’ cash on a series they may end up hating. So while perhaps not the best or purest form of anime, it has its place in the world of anime aficionados, creating new fans (important if we want to pressure the industry to release more titles here at lower costs), providing Anime suitable for the younger viewer, and satiating, somewhat, the thirst for Anime of old and new fan alike.

Basically, it is better than nothin'.

That’s just my opinion. (Now pleeze don' hurt me :heh: )

FYI: I really didn’t like Big-O the first time I saw it. Still, I watched a few more eps., but I still didn’t care for it. I caught some of the last few episodes, however, in an attempt to be fair, and was actually somewhat interested in where the story was going, but since Toonami cut the series at 13 eps…oh well. I gave Big-O several tries, so no one can accuse me of forming a hasty opinion, but I still, overall, don’t care for it. I think it’s the animation style (and the way that robot is drawn) that bugs me the most.

From what I've read, Toonami didn't cut Big-O at 13 episodes, but Big-O was cut at 13 episodes to start with, and the 2nd season was never started.

There are some bits that don't seem to make any sense in the series, but some things just seem to be forshadowing or "mysterious", daring us to figure things out for ourselves (which is something us here in America aren't used to having to do).

Yea Big-O is ugly though, reminds us too much of Giant Robo!

I have mixed opinions about Big O....I have yet to see the entire series, and so my opinion will mst definetly change when I see the whole series. The one thing I don't like is that it looks too much like Batman. But than again thats the artists style and I won't put him down for that. The storyline seems good, although a bit confusing since I haven't seen the first episodes, and usually only catch 2-3 episodes a week. I think Big O will be a pretty good series.

The order you see the episodes doesn't really matter that much because they're all one shot eps except for the first 2. You're right, you will end up liking it, it rules :D

Well I think that's sort of the keyword there Sheex. "you'll end up liking it" I caught the first episode the day it aired and Viola and I looked at each other and said "Okay that was great...until the big dumb mechs messed it up." Honestly I was pretty luke warm about the show...it seemed to have merit but it also had an undeniably hokey quality. I just got a friend of mine hooked on it (it's the first anime he's really been exposed to) and he was very iffy about it because he watched the first two episodes and stopped...then he watched several straight through and it grew on him.
I think sadly one of the downfalls of Big O is you need to watch several episodes to get hooked on it. It's different from anything I'd seen before and I think maybe it was sort of a system shock. I just keep telling people to keep watching because they'll be surprised. It grows on you. :p

... am i the only one who thinks that the mech is very spiffy looking? i think it pops up in the wrong times, and would probably be better if it was taken out, but i'm actually sick of all of the high tech stuff. sure i love evas and gundams, but this, for some odd reason caught my eye... i don't know, maybe it's the fact that it matches the town, the fact that it wears black just like roger :), or the fact that the interior reminds me of old type writers and that you actually can follow HOW he pilots the darn thing. love it when he winds up than swings those lever things to use the arms. it just screams... uh... SPIFFY!!!
I can see WHY you don't like big o (mech not show) though. it seems more like a toy plot than anything else (actually, i think it WAS a toy plot... on the dvd, the original concept for Big-O was just to sell action figures...)

Something essential that's on all good anime. I can't think of a good word for it right now...direction maybe?

It had interesting characters and a story, but it just didn't seem to work for some reason.

Nothing's really wrong with DBZ, SSVegeta. I happen to like it alot, but that's because I'm a very diverse person. I'll watch Escaflowne, then follow it up with, say, Guyver:the bio-booster armor, then round it out with Slayers. I'm just looney like that.

Why don't I like it?
-Worst dub ever made, heck the dub director admitted that they purposely make the non-major characters sound like idiots.
-80% of the show is filler, heck probably even more. It would be one thing if they spent the time fighting, but most of the episode is spent talking about the fight, training, or powering up.
-Totally useless characters like Mr. Satan. Add up all his screen time where he gloats about himself and you get more than the 13 eps that Big O had for the entire series.
-Death is totally irrelevent. It has no impact whatsoever because characters can just be wished back
-Characters like Tien, Yamucha, Chaozu, Master Roshi, etc... who have done nothing since Dragonball still get oodles and oodles of scenes when they haven't contributed anything to the series since Goku was a kid.
- Freeza says stuff like "Pop goes the weasel!" "We could have been so good together" and "Whatever turns you on big boy" need I say more?
-Unlike Big O, you only need the intelligence of a 2 year old to watch it.

I could go on for days... I have no problem with you talking about your beloved 300 episode filler fest in the Dragonball forum, but when you come and start bashing a perfectly good anime with no reasons whatsoever while I can give you 100 reasons why I hate DBZ (heck, I've seen 200+ eps of DBZ, I know what I'm talking about. You probably haven't even watched an entire episode of Big O) maybe you'll understand why I get a little pissed off?

The fact that it doesn't look like, say, Evangelion? Get over it. This is the artist's style. He prefers drawing that way. Not every anime artist likes to draw big eyes and human-like bodies. No two artists draw the same way, and frankly, I'm glad. I'd get bored with anime very quickly if that was the case. Do you think that "Samurai Jack" and "Batman" are low budget cartoons,(please note that I said cartoons, not anime.) just because of the way they're drawn? They've gotten bigger budgets than most Disney movies have had, for crying out loud, and yet they don't look fancy in their drawings, do they?

The fact that the voices are very well done, and that there's no reused scenes help show that this is anything but low budget. The scriptwriting and presentation were suberb, and the characters were very well done. Frankly, I want to see more of Big O, if those Sunrise idiots would make some more episodes. If you want to see what a rushed ending(again, Big O's ending wasn't even supposed to be one!!)then watch "Flame of Recca" and then tell me if the ending for Big O looks rushed to you.

:lol: I just had to post a reply. Out of all the small threads in this forum, the only massive one is one degrading Big O, the anime this forum is dedicated to. In sense it's not that bad of how you make it out to be. I'm just glad Toonami showed it because I wouldn't have spent my $ on buying it, or even renting much of it for that matter. I still have yet to see the whole show (i only have the first dvd and never watched it on CN) so its still brand spanking new for me. It just reminds me of a mixture of james bond, batman, and yes, cowboy bebop (same creators and all...)

plus Animerica loved the series... they said that the whole thing was a 'treat' and they were sad that it ended so arruptly.

and i actually liked pokemon... for the first few episodes... still, it is cute :kawaii:

Anyone have any news yet on a continuation of the series? I know it wasn't very popular in Japan and was actually more popular in the West. If Japan recognizes this, maybe they will continue the series. Otherwise, the Big O ending was bad. Akira had an ending that kept you guessing too, but in the good fashion.

I hope to see an Outlaw Star continuation more than a finish of Big O. I think it's safe to say everyone would agree with me on this one. Sure Big O is incomplete for the most part, but humans alike throughout the world would rather see more OS if they had the choice to select between the too. Other than reference purposes, this forum may be gone in a year if no continuation is made. Personally without an extent, this anime isn't good/popular enough to have it's own forum. though outlaw star is a fairly good series, the big O is still top dog to me. in all reality, CN will probably pop "Angel Links" in for the OS slot, as its kinda a continuation to the series... well not really, but still, it takes place in the same world

i can't reallly request an ending for the Big-O yet since i haven't seen it all yet, but when that time comes around, then i'll be crying ^_^

and children, this is not the playground where we compare each other's GI Joe action figures (though the little tantrums are kinda interesting). this is ANIME... which is ENTERTAINMENT. we all have different tastes...

No, its the exact opposite. It has a stupid cliche ending. The only reason you don't expect it is because up to that point the show was actually original. In the ending they just make it the stupid cliche 'wish for whatever you want' thing and all the characters turn into cardboard cut outs of their personalities from the first 23 episodes. Gene for example turns from an immature, selfish, 'real-life' type of guy into Mr. Perfect. And so on... I've got threads about it at this messageboard, look 'em up.

i actually really found the show to be good, at first i was a little turned off from the super robo mech designs but i warmed up to them pretty quickly. the story line is nice and deep, and i dont expect any dbz jock to like it. everyone has there opinions so let them think what they want. as for me ill go on whatching what i want to watch, so will they. and you know what? tommrow the sun will rise, and it will be a new day.

The show was originally supposed to be 19 eps, but only 13 were produced before(Sunrise, I think)they ran out of money. But i have heard that later this year acts 14 to 19 will be airing HERE stateside BEFORE it airs in Japan

The difference between Big O and Outlaw Star is that Outlaw Star has an ending. Big O doesn't, it just stops. You can't compare the 2, because episode 13 of Big O isn't the ending.

Cryptic, yes. Stupid? I don't think so. The idea of the robots being more than just gundams was intriguing. And the memory Roger had of thousands of those mecha swarming the planet obliterating everything in their path was a real attention grabber.

The thing I like about Big O is the fact that it's more than just a "mecha bashing mecha" series. There's a lot more to it than that, and it ends up being very interesting. The political theme the paradigm corporation gives is intriguing. I like to think of the series as something along the lines of "Sub-Eva", because while it's not as messed up as Eva, it's still more than you'd think it would be at first glance.

I'm sure that at least Sheex agrees with me on that.

I think that anyone who discounts Big O as a work of juvenile entertainment fails to see that it's really one of the best for all ages shows made. I would definitely put it in the ranks of the early episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. I'm eager for the sequel to be released and see the ending especially to learn how the world lost it's memory, why Paradigm is so intent on keeping that memory hidden, and what the MegaDueces have to do with it ^_^

Since it was made by some of the Cowboy Bebop crew, I'm curious if anyone's interested in a crossover or even an amalgam of the two. Ha, Bebop O where Spike Smith, his annoying android sidekick Ed and her dog Ein, and his trusty butler Jet must fight the evil MegaDuces that populate Paradigm City :lol: *at this point Project Akira is taken back to his cell to be heavily medicated*

I still think it's Gwenyth Paltrow's head in that box!

And I wasn't saying that Big O is on the same level as Bebop. I was just noting that they were made by the same crew. Personally while it isn't Cowboy Bebop (and what could be really?) that doesn't make it anyless of a good series. If you have problems with the series give some genuine reasons for it backed by facts rather try to make yourself look all cool and hip by trying to make a joke :)
