Don't you think the Nadesico music is kinda an homage to some of the 80's anime? I think the music has a big 80's feelings, specially the BGMs, the opening theme and the song "Itsuka... shinjite". They remind me of old series like Transformers or Macross.

this is my "theory": since nadesico does refer to Gekiganger A LOT, and that series is rather old methinks, they might have tried to have some "older generation" sounding bgms.

but for me, I don't think any of it sounds old at all. The opening is rather up tempo 90's style, and ending is more 90's popish i guess ...

as for the bgms, I don't get that "nastolgic(sp??)" feeling when listening to them, but like i said, that's just me. ^_^

Gekigangar is not a real series. It was only created for Nadesico, although there is an OVA of Gekigangar available. The series from the 70's and 80's that Gekigangar is based on was called Getter Robo and its sequel Getter Robo G. Both involved 3 ships which would combine (Getter in Japanese is combine or something close) into a giant robot in depending on which combination of the 3 was used. Here is a link to the sequel series Getter Robo G (Starvengers in the US):

BTW the new series, Shin Getter Robo is coming to DVD shortly from ADV, it was made back in 1998 and is really good.

Remember Transformers the Movie,
that movie had a solid soundtrack.
I think that Nadesico's songs have a more modern flow.

The music to me will always be a tribute to middle ninties j-pop so to speak. The sounds do have some influence from the older generation, but I don't think it's too much.
