First of all I'd like to say I only watch Toonami because I don't have money for tapes or dvds(or a dvd player for that matter) :sulkoff:

But n e way has anyone else got nausea from attempting to watch Big O? Also, is it even anime, I'm not sure? It kinda looks like it but then it also has that crappy Superman/Batman Adv. look. Plus the story and everything just plain suck.

*sigh*
You know there's already a thread called "The Big O My God This Show Sucks Monkey Balls (http://www.animeboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14134)" right? Why make another?

I'll say again that this is anime. Does everything have to have the standard what-we-see-everyday anime look to be anime? The character design and artwork in Serial Experiments Lain doesn't look like the screen captures of other series I've seen on the Net...does that disqualify it? It resembles the Batman animation (has the same team) but look closer and you'll see much more detail, action, and flow. Granted, if you don't like Batman's animation (I do) then you might not like Big-O's...but it's OVA-quality animation. Also, we're hardly 5 eps into it...the plot hasn't even been started yet...we just have hanging questions. I'm not trying to jump down yer throat...but give it more time or at least post in the other thread. :)

All these people whining and bitching about Big O makes me sick, literally.

If I see one more Big O thread with someone complaining about how it sucks, I am gonna get into a VERY bad mood.

*is sorry if he is seeming like an ------- right now but is VERY sick of these Big O complaining threads*

What exactly is Big-O and what makes it so bad? My friend is a really good artist and she drew a picture of one of the characters, and I didn't think the drawing looked weird. I never heard of Big-O before that, so could someone please fill me in?

All I have to say it isn't a type of show I'd like to see showing right after Dragonball-Z.

Re: but it's OVA-quality animation

Um, this may be due to the lack of OVA series I've seen, as I've only seen about 5 or so, but I'd say Big 0's Animation isn't near OVA quality.

I don't mind the animation, in fact, before the I found out that Batman the Animated series was made in Japan, I had thought that it was some of the best American Animation I had seen for a TV series in a while. Turns out it was japanese after all.

Big 0 does seem a little wierd, but I think thats what it was supposed to do at the beginning. The plot hasn't developed yet, so you should all give it time.

As for the OVA animation thing, I don't think the background are as good as something like Tenchi Muyo OVA, and I think I like the character designs for Record of Lodoss War much more (and those were made in early 90's).

To me, Big 0's animation isn't *great* but its okay. It certainly doesn't suck at all, and I'm sure the show will come out better than most of the crap in America.

You have a point there. Big-O hasn't exactly exploded with testosterone yet...

OVA-quality...I meant in relation to what else Toonami airs except for Tenchi. Shoulda said that...:heh:

u stoopid Big O bashers! 'is it even anime' ?! are you nuts didnt you even glance at the credits?! its written by hajime yatate! its produced by sunrise! ignorant fool, dont you realize that yatate & sunrise are responsible for Escaflowne, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, Gasaraki, and more?! What more could you ask for?! dont write it off just because you think that it looks american! its as authentic as it gets!

if you're gonna criticize a series on toonami Big O is the last one you should be slamming if you know any anime at all! Big O is infinetally better than DBZ, could easily go toe-to-toe with Outlaw Star, and IMO the Big O is easily on par GundamWing in terms of story, and the BigO easily defeats it in terms of music and animation. its got style and flair, two things that most toonami anime seriously lacks. ignorant toonami-zombie, think before you open your big mouth!

while my opinions above are obviously subjective, the truth is that people dont like Big O, not because it has a poor story line or animation or music. they dont like it because it looks like it might be american, and everyone has this whole goddamn "if its japanse its good, if its american its bad" ideal. you dumbones! animation was freakin' invented in the US without america there is not anime, show a little respect! people like you dont even give the big O a chance cause you're so freakin' blind to anything and everything animated thats not japanese!

anyhow i guess it really doesnt make a difference in the end, after all; if you cant appreciate something just because you're a bigot, then thats your problem and no one elses. this is the 'other anime' forum not the 'pout and whine about what you dont like' forum.

oy oy oy sowwy about my stern tone but i always get riled up by these kinda posts

I wasn't aware of that! I know Sunrise did those animes, but I haven't gotten familiar with the names of the people behind the scenes yet...

Big O is an anime. If I'm right. I believe it's from the same character designer of Cowboy Bepbop. Although I kinda agree with you that it sorta have a Batman, Superman taste in it. I guess it's because their body shape. It's also a fairly new anime even in Japan plus it's not even that popular in Japan. I think you just need to give it some time.

*sigh* Yeah I feel your pain. I had to force myself to watch Big O. I was really dissapointed. So far I have the complete set of DBZ, DBGT, Tenchi, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing......well, you get the idea. I couldn't get into the plot of Big O. It's kinda boring :( (also, it does look a lot like Batman)

Today's piano epsiode was sorta interesting, but not as much as previous eps were. I liked the calm piano theme, but it's probably too calm for a slot right after DBZ...

The mecha design is a bit hard to swallow.... especially if you love the designs in gundam :D . Personally i think its the character designs looking like batman animation that get to me.

Damn it seems like very few people are enjoying this show :(

Aside from animation style (the biggest complaint I can see) what do you not like

I for one like this show alot and in some remote way it reminds me of a movie I seen before called Dark City. I dont know it might just be me but I see nothing wrong with this show, and would venture to say Id purchase it on DVD if it was in an unedited format :)

Know what? I just figure out what makes Big O looks sorta like Batman, Superman style and not anime. First of all, take a close look at the guys chin. It's flat. Just like Superman and Batman. Then there's like this weird commercial saying "Good Guys still wear black" which reminds everyone of batman. Other than that guy looking like you know who. I don't think they are anything like you know what. I think it's pretty cool actually. Course it's not the best anime but it's still watchable.

I might be one of few who enjoy Big-O. Like some have said, it's not the best out there, but I take it for what it is. I was a fan of the Batman and Superman series, so I like the style. I'm interested in seeing who this "Angel" woman really is, and you just gotta love Dorothy.

So far, the show to me is decent. The mecha design just does not compare to Gundam or Evangelion because it looks awkward.

It's supposed to have the look of film noir to make it more "mysterious".

Big O got off on a rough start, but it is watchable. The mech designs are laughable, but the storyline's good. The V/A's ok in my opinion, and the animation is good. The story kind-of gets off badly, but it shapes up to be ok. A few things that get on my nerves is that it is too much like Batman (i.e. old but cool butler, black is the favorite color, dark, Gothic City type of surroundings, etc. etc.), the characters' names could've been picked better. I mean, come on! Roger Smith? Dorothy? Talk about not thinking for interesting names. Two more things, Roger Smith's dub voice is too dull when being serious, not to mention he has a lack of taste (who calls a robot Big O?), and his eyebrows are freaky.

ViciousValentine
14-04-01, 11:21 PM
yea the designs are definetally not for the small-minded that expect a run of the mill 100% orthodox mech, but Big-O (as a series) has a cool sense of style of atmosphere that is comparable to CowboyBebop. i like the 50s vibe but i guess some just dont posess the aquired taste to appreciate it ...

Big O isn't that bad of a show. The bots dont look great cause you dont have the artists from series like Gundam and Evangelion workin on it. And haven't you even considered that the batman series came out after Big O hopefully<please god let it have!!>. Roger Smith is a boring name but you wouldn't give some white guy that wears black a generic hero name like Ryu and expect to be called a negotiator. See, Roger actually looks unique in a way. When have you seen a man with eyebrows that look like layed down T's? THe voice actor for Roger is dull but he sounds laid back like his character acts. The only thing that bothers me is that Norman, the butler, is too much like Alfred. Well, thats my two cents.

MANTA
15-04-01, 05:50 PM
A lot of Big-O slamming going on here, well here is my 2 cents.

Big-O is a decent anime, and seeing as the options given to anime fans are Big-O or Gundam reruns, then I don't think people should be complaining. You are never going to see Cowboy bebop or Evangelion on Toonami, and you can't expect CN to always end up with shows like Outlaw Star. While Big-O may not be as good as Outlaw Star, it is much better than DBZ. If you think DBZ is a good anime then you shouldn't be insulting other animes.

It is similar to batman since the animation studio actually worked on the production for half of the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES series. It is just a 13 episode series, so I guess Yatate and co. were sort of experimenting with this one. Of course you would expect a show with batman feel to appeal more to american audiences, so here it is.

All in all, I think Big-O is watchable, no one is claiming that it is the best, but given the alternatives, people really shouldn't be complaining.

I love the fight scences in DBZ as much as the ones from Fist of the North Star. If someone doesn't like one of these animes, that doesn't mean it sucks b/c its just their opinion like Mina said. Big-O does not suck in my opinion they just should have tweaked a few things.

Eh dbz's animation isn't exactly a warm cup of tea but it has a great storyline to make up for it. See im a total gundam wing fanatic so yeah the mecha designs in big o isn't really what i'm use to, but the storyline's decent and the animation is pretty modern so yeah it isn't bad,but it should switch places with gundam since the calm atmosphere of big o doesn't go good with the rush of after watching dbz. Anywayz i think cn's running out of anime's since they keep on showing the same oavs over and over again.....plus they show some of the animes three times like gundam (not that im complaining) but yeah at lest they didn't stick thundercats in outlaw star's place *shivers*

I love Big O. I like the atmosphere, the animation and the battles. I love Dorothy and I like the story. I don't see how Big O's mech is any more ridiculous than Gundams. It's different, people try to compare things too much(anybody remember my sick of eva thread, it's happening right now.) It is from an indeterminate future with an indeterminate style of warfare so that's why it looks the way it does.

I think all the characters are interesting but I love to see the interaction between Roger and Dorothy. I like the music too, it's cool. I think this show is much better than Outlaw Star, but that's just my opinion.

P.S. doesn't anybody else think Dorothy is HOT:inlove:

Neh, I've replied to some of the other threads but I've got things to say for the people that love it and the people that hate it:
For the people that love it, yes it's film noir style...watch some foreign films and you'll see a common vein. I found the show very enjoyable. The mech design is weak compared to Gundam or Escaflowne but it's got a mysterious aire and I'm hanging on the final few episodes.
For those of you that hate it:
Cheer up! From what I can tell there's only 13 episodes so you won't have to suffer long.
(I wish there was more to it...if there's more than 13 I'll be happy but from what I can see there isn't)

The story sucks eh? Do you really know what the real story is or are you basing that off of just one episode? And yes it is anime...it even has a manga for crying out loud. Just because it doesn't look like every other anime doesn't mean it's not anime. Besides I think it looks a wealth better than any crap animation you find in the states.

I find the fact that people don't think Big O is anime based on how it looks is almost racist. Does every anime have to have people with big eyes and unnaturally colored hair. I LOVE Big O, I feel it's a real breath of fresh air on Toonami. I really enjoy the spooky city with amnesia setting. I also love the mechs (Big O in paticular). Big O seems to be a low-tech mech (hey I rhymed), it's highest tech weapon is a laser which he uses like 4 times in the whole series. I really love the concept of a big fistedmech with piledrivers in it's arms. You gotta admit even for you haters, that when you see Roger start up the PDs, you go "yes yes yes"! As for the names, I find the fact that they use common names (Roger, Dorothy, Norman, Dan to name a few) makes it feel even creepier. As Paradigm meens belonging to a set it adds to the mood. It's also a great touch that the sun never shines.

Ok heres the thing....I dont thing Big O sucks...but its defenatly would not be on my top ten anime listings.

And the reason why is not all purely because the artwork needs help...(which ...common guys...it does)....its because the plot line is kinda weak. It reminds me of bad repeats of Godzilla where every single episode is the exact same as the one before it. Where at the end the giant robot shows up...uses the super power and the world is saved. Doesnt this sound like a bad power rangers show? Perhaps the series will get more depth to it as it progresses...I have to confess I havent seen it all. But for those of you out there who like that type of thing...HEY more power to ya. I dont condemn those who like it. Hell I have been told more then once that Dragonball Z is just a string of pointless fighting sequences with no plot. (And after I smacked that A-hole in the face) I explained that its just something I like so F-off.

I will give the series this though..the soundtrack is kinda groovy. Very Cowboy Bebopish.

Ah... just what I expected from the typical Big O basher. First, you say the plot totally reeks yet you admit that you haven't even seen the whole show yet. Most people agree that the series gets much better in the latter half, me included. How do you expect any show to get a large plot in a mere couple of episodes? The show expands as you get on with actual 'badder endings' later on as amazing as it is! Did you know that not every episode ends happily? This ain't Dragonball Z! Multiple episodes end up with screw ups, or characters p'oed at each other or other stuff... Its not a hero saves the day kind of thing in every ep. You clearly have only watched the first few episodes and none of the later ones. Even so, Big O has more plot in a single episode than 13 episodes of DBZ. Which takes me to the second part of my argument... you claim you like DBZ, but you don't tell us why. You just like it because? What kind of an argument is that? You sound like such a hypocrite, you say that Big O is nothing but a hero saves the world show when you haven't even seen the whole thing, yet you love the very show that you're supposed to despise! Just what do you think DBZ is? Its about the hero of the world saving everyone! Jeez, you're just what I expect out of the Big O bashers, you don't give the show a second thought, you probably tuned in for a single episode, barely payed attention and threw it off as a Batman clone.

Ok listen....odviously you misconstrued what I was saying and in order to protect your ego about the show you felt the need to go off on a rant. First of all...if you bothered to read the first line of my post I said in plain english...I dont think big o sucks. Which means in most peoples minds the simple truth that I am not a Big O basher......That I am just stating an opinion of the show thus far...and since I have seen about half of the episodes...I think that entitles me to have somewhat of an opinion of the show. ALSO you will notice that instead of professing to know EVERYTHING about the show...which I dont...I humbly admitted that I HAVENT seen the whole thing...which means I am still watching it even though I STILL think the plotline is kinda weak...and thats "kinda weak" not "totally reaks"...am I going to fast for ya here? Just let me know. I also said that perhaps the series will get into more depth as the show continues...therefore I recognize that "it could get better".....are we learning yet? Second of all...I dont know what limbo you pulled the need for me to see a "happy ending" from but you can just leave that to the poke-me-man fans. In fact some of my favorite shows are dark ones, and I am always open to another. Thirdly, why do I like DBZ, well....since this is a Big-O forum and I didnt want to go off on a tangent about DBZ other then making a small reference to prove my point I didnt say anything. But hey you asked so let me answer.....First of all I like DBZ cause the art is really done well. I "happen to like" <----- that type of art over the type that Big O uses which "I think" <----- looks like its done in a hurry....see notice the use of arrows for helping the weak minded to recognize where the OPINIONS are. It is still ok to have an opinion right? Ok just checking. I also happen to like the characters in DBZ. I think there are a lot of good contrasts between good and evil. Such as Goku and Vegita, Goku and Piccallo...etc. I think that over the 500 some episodes as compared to the 13 of Big O...the popularity and the characters have grown considerably. Now on to MY other point. You seem to have this problem with reading...so allow me to point out what I said once again.... "But for those of you out there who like that type of thing...HEY more power to ya. I dont condemn those who like it. " Doesnt someone bearing a striking resemblence to myself say something like that in my original post? Oh yeah I did. For all you slow learners out there...this means that ONCE AGAIN I am referring to the fact that I have an OPINION about the show and that its JUST AN OPINION. So you know what....next time you flaunt your ignorance on a public web site be sure that you understand the entirety of the situation before you decide to try and free the world from "big o bashers"...stop burning your bras and get over it ...its just a show.

LoL, I did kinda go overboard, didn't I? for that I apologize.

Although what I see in DBZ is lame fights stretched over dozens of episodes while characters like Krillin, Tien and Yamcha do nothing but stand off at the sidelines and act extremely shocked the whole time. I don't see how anyone can enjoy that more than Big O, but I guess many do so I'll just stop ranting about that show and shut up.

29-06-01, 10:36 AM
no problem dude...I understand how it is when someone really likes a show....believe me Im like that about a lot of things. And about DBZ yeah I have to agree that some characters seem to have absolutely no point to them whatsoever. I think that the reason it seems that way is because some of the chracters were important in the beginning of the series ....AKA master Rochi...who was really strong at the beginning...but now cant even come CLOSE to the power level of goku in the later episodes...I think the guys at DBZ just kept him on cause we were all used to seeing them. Anyway...I am still giving big O a chance and have to admit that it is getting better. Who knows one of these days I could be a big o maniac too!
