I think Gene is like any other anime hero. Um, take that back, Gene is like some stranger that stumbles upon this huge power and is blankheaded to see what he actually has. Gene is extremely lucky and he's also lucky Jim tells him what to do (only in Final Countdown did Gene actually think and save the day). Gene isn't a bad hero but he isnt' the best either.

I think the role that the creators of the show intended for Gene is a figure of identity for bitter Generation X males who want to think that it okay to be cynical, rude and misoginistic. Hence he truly is nothing but a caraicature.
