What happened between Folken and the dragon at first?Everytime Folken is aked why he joined Zaibach he recalled when he was hunting the dragon, and when the dragon was about to kill him and then "something happened" and the dragon retreated...Why?What happened?I saw the edited version,so I suspect I missed an episode or two...

No one knows for sure just why the dragon retreated without finishing him off. Based on what Folken said, my theory is that the dragons in Escaflowne have a latent empathic ability, and respond in kind to the feelings of their opponents. In other words, if you attack them with rage and hate, then they fight back. Cast aside your feelings of agression, and the dragons will withdraw in peace. It is the heart of a swordsman that summons the dragons and their urge to kill; they would not attack otherwise. Confronted with death, Folken let go of his anger, his pain, his fear, his desire to fight. Sensing a heart at peace, the dragon's rage subsided and it let him be.

yup, he's right, the Dragon's actions are based solely on the emotions of the person they are attacking. Like in that very same episode when Van stops being so angry at Folken, the dragons just walk away.:eek:

Oringinally posted by Darklightz..

I saw the edited version,so I suspect I missed an episode or two.

You always lose some sort of plot when editing comes about.... kinda like you lose the feel of a show when you go from the original japanese va to the american va.

Ive got all the escaflowne DVDs, and they are uncut i assume. Its not what was shown on Fox Kids where they cut out the first ep. And its the same as the fansubs i watched a year ago so...
Ive also heard that the dub isnt the same one used by Fox Kids
I wouldn't know cuz i dont watch dubs....

Here's something you should notice. Three times Folken tells Van to drop his sword, and when he does, the dragons leave. In the flashback where Folken was fighting the Dragon, he had the Dragon nailed, but he hesitated. Why? I think it was because he thought about what Van said about killing Dragons to become king. Anyway, the Dragon took advantage of this lapse and bit Folken's arm off. Did he eat it? No, he just tore it off. I think he could have eaten Folken whole, but he didn't. He just tore off the arm. And not just any arm, but Folken's sword arm. When Folken lost the will to fight, the Dragon left, almost as if making sure Folken wouldn't have the chance to strike again. Makes you think, don't it?

Ok, here's for all those who've only seen the cut version of 'Esca' or have any questions about it.

I suggest watching the uncut version. It's better by far, but must have been good *enough* that I got hooked and ventured to buy the tapes. I'm assuming you watched the FoxKids version if it was cut. What FoxKids did was take the dub, which was produced by Bandai (the 'Esca' distributor of the subtitled tapes also), and editted it to make it "kid-friendly" and what the station people thought would be interesting for under-12-year-old boys--not the best of ideas considering that's not the age audience 'Esca' is geared towards. The uncut dub is no different from the subtitled-in-English Japanese version, except for the English voices of course, and in my opinion was done quite well considering dubs aren't usually as good as the origional Japanese version. The one you saw on FoxKids had a *lot* of changing and re-arranging and wasn't even finished. Some changes include totally different background music that was never origionally in 'Esca', taking different songs from the 'Esca' score and putting it in different scenes than in the origional version, *totally* different opening credits, and re-arranged scenes and cut-out scenes (some episodes were combined) and even some totally made up scenes and dialogue (they obviously used a comp for the former and got the actors to say some different lines for the latter).

Any other questions about what was changed? ^.^ I'll be happy to answer any. I have all 8 dub tapes and all 8 subtitled tapes and 6 of the 10 episodes aired last year on FoxKids recorded. I also have 5 'Esca' soundtrack CDs. So, you could say I have a pretty good knowledge of what's what between the different versions and what music's where. ^^;

Yeah, well, Fox Kids is stupid....next, they'll be trying to bring shows like Ninja Scroll over....

ouch that would have hurt your wallet, how much did it cost you to get all 8 tapes dub and sub. I don't think it would have cost much more to have bought a dvd player and the dvds. Work it out you never know

^_^; I actaully don't mind, I like the series so much. You're right it probably might have bees cheaper to get the player and the DVDs but I like the sub boxes and anyway my family's stubborn about getting things like a DVD player just for a single set of DVDs. We don't buy movies too often. Most are recordings.

Dryden-san's explaination is the way I saw it as well.

As for the DVD question, I believe the DVDs are the uncut version with the choice of English or Japanese with subs.

Side comment:
If you can't afford the US DVDs and want to see the uncut eps for a reasonable price, you can buy the HK dvds off e-bay or a couple other sites. Just make sure your seller is dependable, and ask what their exchange/return policy is (some dvds have skipping/sticking issues). The HK dvd subs are ok. The first two eps have BAD translations (but are understandable) but the rest are fine. A few times the subs go off the screen, however. Furthermore, I think there are two HK dvd versions out there, but I'm not sure which one is "better".
