Slayers' american VAs - good or bad?

in my opionion, to put it plainly, the american VA's for all the characters in Slayers are extremely horrifying. not the kind of nice horrifying like in the old horror movies, but the kind of horrifying that, if it doesn't make you keel over in the first few seconds of listening, sends you into life-threatening convulsions immediately. does lina have some kind of accent? i thought i heard it, but didn't because (fortunately) my screaming covered up her english voice when i happened to stumble across a sound clip on the internet. i don't understand... how can you hear lina's dragon slave in english and stand it? how? how? HOW????

Slayers is definitely one of the WORST dubs I have ever heard in my life! Slayers Next is even worst! Xellos has a voice than reminders me of a male Fran Drescher! Zel sounds way too old, and Amelia....::shudders:: Stick to the sub!!!!!

really? damn! I've only seen the Slayers season, in japanese, and I am stuck to listen the dub if I want to see Slayers Next... nooooooooooo! I want to see it, but I don't want to be sick hearing the dub... oh well, we always have to make sacrifices ^^

::clears throat:: Well, I really don't mind Crispin Freeman's voice...I think he does a good job as Zelgadiss. David Moo on the other hand (dubbed Xelloss) can die a slow painful death.

And if you really think about it...the Slayers dub (at least first season) is one of the better dubs out there...Zelgadiss' changing voice and Rezo the drag queen not withstanding.

I saw the dub first, and it was what got me interested in Slayers, and other anime as well. So I at least really can't go bashing the dub....

Other points of interest....
--Amelia is *supposed* to be irritating, in a cute sort of way. It's part of her characterization.

--Nobody likes dubbed Xelloss. Crispin Freeman was complaining about him!

Anyone who thinks Slayers is the worst dub ever has never watched the dubbed Sailor Moon. My ears are bleeding just writing about it... Lisa Ortiz is not a bad Lina even if she doesn't compare to Megumi. Eric Stuart is a GOOD Gourry, and he was Gourry before Pokemon was a gleam in the WB's eye. Likewise Zelgadis' original voice was good. Crispin Freeman is a good voice actor, but he is NOT Zelgadis. At least he has an appreciation for the original show, which is more than you can say for David Moo. Dude, have you even watched the original once? Original Xellos=Happy, cheerful, but evil. Moo's Xellos=annoying jerkface; DIE!

The american VAs of Slayers are something you really need to get used to, especially when you've seen the japanese version. I've been comparing each american VA with the original VA and found nearly nothing I liked. But who can expect to get an american Megumi Hayashibara for the dub? For those who haven't seen the original it's certainly easier to get along with the VAs. In my opinion they weren't that bad. Watch the Sailor Moon dub and you know what's really bad. ;)
I'm just happy that Germany subbed the whole Slayers series.

Okay...it's not just the voices that agrovate me. It's mostly the fact that the American VAs can't voice act worth sh**. And I try very hard not to listen to the American VAs so i can't really name any one. gomen...

Well, once again, people who have listened to Japanese anime and subbed anime so much that they have grown use to it so when they watch any dubbed series they find some kind fault with it wether it be a small or big fault.

Can you blame them? HELL NO!!!

RAW Japanese and sub titled anime is by far the best type of anime to watch simply cause its orginal and hasn't been edited except for maybe sub titled cause I've seen a few were they swith out a words true meaning for something else cause they didn't find it appropriate(did I spell the right?) for viewers.

Well, I'm certainly in the minority here..as I mainly prefer the dub to the sub.


While I agree that certain voices are for the worse (Xelloss..Bleh, Ameila's first voice actor...) My main problem with the Japanese version is Lina...she is far too shrill for my tastes...I wince whenever she screams at people...which, as you all know..is a lot. I'm neutral about everybody else, but the main character is usually make or break for people....

Welcome to Animeboards, Hit & Run! You ought to go introduce yourself in the Introductions forum. And yes, Megumi is just as shrieky doing Lina as Lisa Ortiz. I find this doesn't bug me as much as when english VA's do it though. This is probably a buffering effect caused by listening to a foreign language.

That is strange. I thought Megumi did an amazing job with Lina Inverse, the shrieky voice captured the charecter perfectly.

probably becuase u saw the dub first, so u dont have anything to compare the VA's for the dub and the sub.

also, crispin freeman is also the dub voice for tylor (irresponsible captain tylor) and i think its pretty good, perfect fit to the character. on the other hand, lina ortiz was also the VA for azalyn, its ok, not too bad, she sounds annoying as lina inverse, makes me wanna kill myself
