Was Kenshin thick or sumthin'?

In the manga (Book 20) when Tomoe tells KEnshin that her fiance was killed in Kyoto, and that was why she joined the scheme to kill Kenshin, he holds her in his arms :inlove: and tells here it's allright now or sumthin', right? (audience nods and grunts yes)
But then in Book 21, after he's killed her by accident, (whoops, didn't see that coming, sorry bout getting ya kimono bloody, hunny) when he's reading her journal, THERE he realises that he was the one who killed her fiance! I mean, what's up with that? Is it just me?:confused:

So it goes, Tomoe's fiance killed, Comes to Kyoto to kill Kenshin, wouldn't he kind of CLICK that he was the one who killed him? I dunno, I don't get, It's weird.
