Well,
i personally like to think i have a fair understanding (but it will always only be a personal understanding or opinion). But this is because i have a psychology degree (but who doesn't) and a personal preference for Jungian Psych. I also study the Qabalah (From a western Hermetic perspective). In fact it was the Qabalistic overtones which first hooked me on the series.

Or you can just do what i did- buy Genesis 0:13 and watch it about 15 hundred million times till it starts to make sense.....

After studying the last two episodes of NGE, I think I have figured out all the relevancy of pictures and words, plus the actions. I think I have decoded the entire last two episodes of NGE. I can;t go into great detail now, but If you write down the parts that are actually giving you trouble, then I can help.
Just write down what particular part is troubling you, like 'Why have the giant black Unit 01?' or 'Why was there a picture of Pen Pen on the photograph of bottles in a bottle shop', etc. I can not respond to such a general question.
