View Full Version : Most likeable main character?

Ok. This does not mean 'sexiest', 'most righteous', or any singular category. This simply refers to which anime series' main character you like the best, and WHY you like them. Of course, these categories could play a part, but what I mean is, don't pick someone for one attribute only.
My nomination? Vash the Stampede, hands down. He's brave, has his morals straight, values life... and the biggest factor, he's hilarious. That's what makes him loveable as a character - the fact that everything is done in such an idiotic way suddenly makes his principles seem far more real than a superhero standing up and saying 'I fight for peace and justice'. Vash never kills, we've seen that, and he is humanized by his idiotic humour, so that the message really hits home - life is the most important thing in the world, after all.
Well, what about y'all? :)

hmmm...i let me see

Nagako of FY...

i like the character because he's one cold hearted person with an enigmatic personality...

Tough one since I have a lot. I'd probably say Professor Tomoe from Sailormoon S because he's a wicked villian, especially in the dark when his glasses glow. He's got two sides, the bad side and the good side where he does have a heart to care for Hotaru.

Then again, there's also Vash the Stampede.

Sorry, I think I phrased it badly. I meant the absolute focal character of a series, such as:

Trigun - Vash The Stampede
EVA - Shinji Ikari
Sailor Moon - Usagi Tsukino
Dragonball - Son Goku
Techi Muyo - Tenchi Masaki

etc. etc. Sorry about that one. :heh:

Good to see someone else thinks Vash rules. :)

as far as Toonami Dragon Ball Z goes, I'd have to say Goku. I heard they don't make him as comical in the Japanese version but he'd still be my favorite.

In no real order...

1. Angelique Limoges from...uh... Angelique ^^;; :B/c I really, really wish i could be in her position and I like Limoges better than Collet for some reason. And as far as "nice" characters go, she's actually never pissed me off by being that way ^^.

2. Arslan from Arslan Senki: Damnit, i cry everytime I watch Arslan. I want to give him a huge hug every five minutes ( ... an H hug too? hmm... may not... he's only 14 ^^; ).

3. Akari from Battle Athletes: Face it Akari rules! Heh heh, her "Akari House" she made was so cute. And damn I wish I could her size (what is it? -1?) and be such a kick ass athlete. She's always nice about everything too, which is something I can't seem to do.

4. Shioru from Prince/Princess Bomber: Shioru=god of all biseinen (him being 30 with that complexion and all... i mean damn). He is the nicest, sweetest Jrocker there could ever, ever be. I wish celebraties were really as nice as him.

I can't just not post in a topic I started, so here's a nomination for second place:

Arsene Lupin the Third from... ah, 'Lupin III'. This guy is similar to Vash in that he can combine humour and seriousness in a way that works, but it doens't work quite as well as Vash's does.

I have to say Sakura from CCS, Sana-chan from Kodocha (I know she's hyper but she's still cool ^_^), Vash, and Kenshin!

*turns to his Vash wallscroll* See, Vash? Everyone thinks you're cool! :)
Vash is, in my opinion, one of the finest characters ever created in the history of the universe. (He even gets the honour of being my avatar! :D )

My favorite has to be Vash. I can confidently say that even though I haven't seen as many anime as the many of you here.

The reason I chose Vash is simply because his chareceter grows on you. When I first watched Trigun I really didn't care much for Vash, little did I know that 22 episodes later I would own a Vash action figure. The best thing about the series is the way they let the charecters develop. When the series starts, none of the other charecters actually like Vash. But he grows on them as the series progresses. I really dislike it when all the charecters fall in love with the hero from the get go, and many times it is for no reason other than the fact that the writer needs people following the main charecter around.

Another great thing about Vash is that he is never pushed as "the great hero". I hate it when a series is built around a charecter who we are supposed to like simply because he is the best fighter, or the best race car driver, or whatever. The other charecters never try to feed into his ego by contantly reminding the viewers how "great" the hero is at whatever it is he does.

The funny thing is that I really don't like goodie goodie charecters, simply because they always come off as very fake. But Vash is different, he doesn't come off as the indestructable hero, but he seems more human. This makes him much easier to relate to.

Simply put, you can't hate Vash. If you do, you aren't human, you may some sort of monster. No, even mosters like Vash, you simply can't hate Vash.

As the man himself would say:
"LOVE & PEACE!"

I totally agree with that. Basically, that's what I was trying to say from the start, but you've put it in better words than I did. Nightow and Yoshimatsu are total geniuses when it comes to making a loveable hero. Even though I've seen very little of Trigun, Vash is fast becoming my favourite character of all time in anything, ever. In fact, he may already be there.

Misato Katsuragi. She has the personality of someone I'd like to meet. Her problems can somehow relate to mine and I would find her as a perfect match to have a long-term relationship with. I hope I can find someone like her in the near future. :)

I LOVE Asaba! Did you notice how they changed his hair towards the end of the series... that bugs me

Anyway,
I've never seen Trigun so I don't know about Vash...
My answer for the most likeable main character is Kenshin. He's the kind of character you can't help but like :D

Too bad I've never seen most of the anime that people are nominating. :(
Still, has anyone ever seen Saber Marionette J? Lime's meant to be one of the most loveable main characters ever, isn't she? (Never seen it myself.)

Yeah, and another main character I find likable is Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing. He is the friendliest and carefree pilot there is in the group.

My favorite is ... <que drumroll>

Card please ...

Justy Ueki Tylor, age 20, from the series "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor" :D

It's a close call between him and Vash, but Vash has gotten a lot of mentions here, and Tylor hasn't, sooooo ... :D

I like 'im 'cause you *KNOW* he can't be that stupid ... and his laid back attitude of "let things take care of themself" results in some really great comedy.

My top heroes!

1. Taikoubou(Houshin Engi). Taikoubou is the man. He acts like such a slacker you'd think he just likes to goof around and do stupid things, but his stupid actions are nearly always something thought out before and he always manage to do something that both surprises the reader, his companions and the villains^^. He never uses his full power and seems like he's always getting in trouble but its all part of his plan, he wins with his wits even though he would seems like a stupid slacker at first glance^^. It nearly always seem he's gonna loose but he surprises us with some screwed up plan^^. He also has a very interesting past developed further in the manga(though it's past where are the translated scans on the net).

2. Urameshi Yuusuke(Yuu Yuu Hakusho, though my favorite character of the serie is Kurama its obvious Yuusuke is the main hero). Well, Yuusuke is a very likable hero, he's funny, he's strong and he's seemingly stupid(maybe he is -_-; ) and is more of the kind to act promptly on impulse.

3. Utena Tenjou (Shoujo Kakumei Utena). No question here, it has already been mentioned before, she is a very likable main character.

4. Killiran-chelo(Majutsushi Orphen). Orphen is badass, he's cool, and he's capable. Though i think it might be even harder for him to manage around with a bunch of brats always around him than fighting with magic^^;.

5. Luffy D. Monkey(One Piece). With his 'strech armstrong' body he does some kickass moves, he's funny, he's seemingly brainless(yes there's a difference between stupid and brainless), he always says what he thinks, he's not afraid of anything(the scene with the whirpool in the first volume anyone?^^; or with Baggy's cannon.) and he's the only character to have made me laugh so much by gnawing at a cage's steel bars . Yet he is a complex character with emotions and an interesting backstory(like most of the One Piece characters). I think he might have merited the second place but i don't wan't to switch my post around^^;.

You're a very interesting character, Mr. Maguamaru! Myself, being an Yaoi and shounen-ai fan, seems to find Yuri fans hard to come by. I wonder why? u'd think there would be more yuri fans and less yaoi fans, but it's just the oposite. Or maybe maybe most of them aren't as outspoken as you ^__^

Aww, thanks! I feel strangely touched by that, you know. :D
I think it's because so many blokes take what their given, try to fit in. What they're given is hentai - pure and straight. More girls than guys seem to start wondering about this stuff, so I guess more girlsfind the answer. So, yaoi fans seem to outnumber yuri fans.
And just for the record, in my entire life, I have never met a single female yuri fan. :(

Well then, you must never have seen the Utena ML :heh: There are a few of them there, and a notably humorous Utena fanfic writer manages to squeeze yuri into damn near every fanfic she writes. Yes, Maguamaru, Utena is -the- series for you.

But I digress...

My favorite main character is definitely Marron of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. She's the antithesis of the typical mahou-shoujo heroine (a la Usagi and the like)---she's strong, brave, intelligent, confident, and capable. Plus, her token love interest (Chiaki) is actually cool, even if he is the "Panty Man" (as Marron so affectionately screams at him the second time they meet).

There are shows which I love, yet I do not like the main character. However there is rarely a main character I like in a show I hate. What am I trying to prove? I forget, so let's just go to the list. If we're talking about likable main characters then it has to be:

Justy Ueki Tylor! Why? He manages to be a decent captain, a cunning military strategist and a sympathetic guy, all without changing his core personality: World's biggest slacker. Sorry, Vash. We all like you, but you can't be everyone's hero. And Spike is ahead of you on the waiting list. It seems that almost everyone favors the laid back guys, though.

Ok, I've made up my mind! Much as I love Trigun, much as I will die of asphyxiation if I don't watch it, I now feel compelled to spend my next £20 on Utena instead.
Sorry, mister Vash! :( But yuri takes priority! :naughty:
