For true lovers of Ruronin Kenshin, STOP READING or WATCHING at the End of the Kyoto Arc. Watsuki should have let that be the dignified ending of the series. Instead, he petered out into a tale of contrived politics and self loathing, and turned Kenshin, happily married to Kaoru as he is, into a cripple. A very low note to end on indeed.

So stop reading as soon as Kenshin says "I'm home", and leave with fond memories of a sweeping saga of heroism.

I thought Jinchu was very good. While it did turn our favourite Rurouni into a man who cannot weild his sakabatou with proficentcy, it does tie up everything else. Sano, Megumi and Yahiko, in paticular... though not really for Megumi. ^_^;;

Precisely!! This is a HERO who pioneered a new age of peace, and the gratitude that fate gave him was to waste his body so much that he is now no more than a glorified kendo practitioner and house-husband. A lousy ending for a hero indeed.

But isn't Kenshin's dream now Yahiko's? So I think Kenshin would be happy with that. Yahiko's the new generation that will protect the peace, so I think that this is just a way of allowing Kenshin to finally rest.

But is it not tragic that the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu style of Swordsmanship will become EXTINCT because Kenshin SELFISHLY REFUSED to teach a successor to the style before his crippling?

You're correct in that true Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu will never be passed down but Yahiko probably can/has mastered some basic techniques... though his true power is fighting without a sword at all.

Watsuki also imagined that Kenji would grow up to become a warped soul and a kenjutsu genius who could pick up Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu by only hearing stories.

But yeah, it is tragic that Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu in its purest form will never be seen again... unless Hiko had nothing to do and decided to get a baka deshi #2. :P

Who knows, considering that practition of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu seems to retard the aging process (Hiko looks like his 25 at the age of 43), he may well live into the 20th century to teach a student or two after Kenshin, assuming that he bothers, of course.

no it does not retard the aging process as you so say. remember, whenever kenshin uses the succession technique his body pays the price.

since Mitsurugi ryu is a speed technique, one can only go as fast as his body can take it. the faster he goes, the more energy he spends and it takes its toll on the body. im not that good explaining physics so i wont delve into that part any more but i think you should get the idea.

in other words, the use of mitsurugi ryu does not make one younger but older. hiko may be more powerful and may look younger for his age, but that is bec. he hasnt fought people like Shishio or even Enishi.

and yes saidly, kenshin wouldnt teach Yahiko the mitsurugi ryu. first of all, he believes that the sword no longer has its place in the modern world and secondly bec. he is a man of honor, who will stand by his word.

perhaps Yahiko's only hope to learn the mitsurugi ryu is to go to Hiko

We can only hope that Hiko has not degenerated into a dribbling Gerryatric or Altzymers sufferer before Yahiko goes to find him. And also, by the last time we see Yahiko, his body has already matured into that of a young adult: far too late to attain any potence with a new martial art.

well Yahiko is around 10-12 y.o. kenshin was what 14? when Hiko started training him? perhaps you can say that with Yahiko he has the potential to learn mitsurugi ryu

1. since he has trained under the kamiya kashin style, hence he is physically perhaps even mentally prepared to take on another discipline.

2. he has witnessed kenshin battle numerous times and has picked up some of kenshin's moves.

3. he has applied his knowledge in real combat proving that he is superior compared to children his age but more importantly to those who he has defeated.

4. he has the will and the determination to raise his current abilities to that which may be helpful to his friends. remember he does not like being called a boy and feeling that he is helpless in the face of powerful opponents.

well dont let the anime decieve you... Sano is 19 and how old does he look like?

Actually, Himura Shinta, (Kenshin as a child) began his training at the tender age of five, barely out of toddlerhood, to harden his body to the demands of the style.

Myojin Yahiko walked down the martial path at the age of 10, thankfully with a less demanding style, as his body has already stiffened into the perliminary stage of puberty.

By the time he was 15, at the end of the OFFICIAL story, (thats the Manga), his body was basically in adulthood, FAR too late to build the strength required for the legendary way of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu.

i still think yahiko can learn the technique at that age... but not master it thoroughly though because he started late...

We can only hope that Yahiko, who is destined to be a great man, won't do somethin stupid like joining the military forces of Japan.

For a person of his heroic credentials would surely rise rapidly in rank, and that would ensure him becoming one of the corrupt government maggots that would conquer Taiwan by 1895 and ally with the Krauts in WWII.

We can only hope that he adopts Kenshin's philosophy of non intervention, or a great hero would go to waste indeed.

Well, knowing Watsuki (actually, this is just a blind guess), Kenji would kill Yahiko and Shin-ya (Yahiko and Tsubame's son that Watsuki wrote about) would challenge Kenji to a fight for the sakabatou... and die... 'cos you know, Kenji's the son of Kenshin and Kaoru... and is older and stuff. ^_^;; <-- bored and has ruined the mood
