Nadesico is a mix of comedy and space opera. This is an agreed upon fact, yes? My question is, at the end of the series, do you feel it was more comedy than space opera, or did space opera have a greater presence? Halfway through the series, I'm leaning towards space opera. There are funny parts, but the only things I've seen so far that I found really funny were scattered widely. All the episodes are amusing, but to consider it a comedy above a space opera requires a greater... humor density? That sounds wrong, but you know what I'm saying, right?

So, at the end, what is Nadesico to you? Comedy or space opera?

It's an excellent combination of both. And that's why I like it!

I know it's both. That's what I said. I'm just asking which one you think has a greater presence in the series.

I'd go for comedy...the space opera aspect is almost nonexistant through most of it (I thought). When I watched this series, the thing that kept popping up in my head is "When is this gonna start getting serious?!"...and for that matter, the serious occurances are very few and far between...

Nadesico will always be a comedy for me ^_^

I believe it is a comedy with a deeper meaning. What I mean to say is that "Space Comedy" fits the description very well.

However I will lean towards the more serious aspect of the series.

Yes Yes.

It's a comedy with some good points, serious moments and some serious irony. How about this for starters; you've got anime characters that watch an anime and comment on how their life is real and therefore more relevent than TV, then you've got us the audience reflecting similarly!

Gotta love Gekiganga

I would say its more of a satire of pretty much any other space-anime, including Gundam, Macross and any other you'd like to name.

But overall, I would really classify it as more of a comedy than a space opera.

For me personally, I think its a great comedy. However, I do appreciate how they still take the violence and repercussions of war seriously.

Stupid nitpicking point: I'd classify it more as a parody than a satire. But yes, looking back, I 'd have to change my vote to comedy. It's not just a matter of finding something that actually makes you laugh. You have to bear in mind what they intended to be funny. There were definetly more funny in here than drama. I do like how they still took death and dying (mostly) seriously though.

This post & The following post by Nialin contains the same spoilers
because I forgot to warn people first. SORRY .
Those who haven't seen the WHOLE series. AVERT YOUR EYES.
The following post by Nialin also contains the same because I forgot to warn people first. SORRY :sweatdrop .

I think that as the characters began to develop as a result of the situation they find themselves in the story shifts more from a comedy to a space opera. This tranition occurs around the point when they realize that the Jovians are human. At this point comedy takes a back seat to drama and character development.:teleport:

What?! The Jovians are human! Aww ----, this ruined the whole series for me:(.

J/K, I've seen the whole series, and for me, I think it was more on the Comedy side than the Space Opera, but not by too much. I woul have to say in percentages that:

Space Opera - 45%

Comedy - 55%

So there's my opinion.

Sorry, it slipped my mind. I usually talk about specific subjets where I don't have to worry about spoiling it, becaouse the people talking about it have to have the same knowledge to understand the thread. I guess I just forgot I was in a very general forum providing specific information.:sweatdrop
I never expected anyone's first post to be a repremand. I am really, really sorry.

Well it knocked me out of lurker mode I guess
Sorry if I was a bit harsh, just a little irritated because I started watching Nadesico the day before I read this thread.

Well to stay on topic, I only have the first 2 DVDs and it definitely made me laugh all the way through, so I'd say it is more a comedy than a space opera. But at some points (like the battle between the aestivalis' and delphinium fighters) there is a dramatic overtone.

It does both the drama and comedy very well.

I've seen the movie so I learned that the jovians where human that way.

The movie has a much higher percentage of space opera-ness, but its still funny.

I suppose I'll revise my view once i finish watching the rest of the series.
