Now that I have finnished the NGE videos, the series not the movies, I am considering starting to colect the graphic novels.
The question is are they any good?? I have had a flick through the graphic novel for Genesis 0:1 and have noticed that it goes into more detail than the videos. For example when Shinji's Eva 01 goes berserk in the graphic novel Shinji sees his mother just before the Eva goes berserk but in the video this is not shown. Do the graphic novels go into any more detail than the videos????

Well, I believe that the manga of Eva is being released by Viz. So the best place to start would probably be http://www.viz.com and then work your way from there.

I've got the first book and will soon get the rest, as soon as I can scrape up some cash. They are fairly good, and the storyline has been altered a bit, which I though made more sense.
*spoiler for the comic*
For instance, when Sachiel arrives for the first time, Rei pilots Unit 01 against the angel, which is why she recieves all those injuries.
However, I prefered the anime, because you got all the sound effects and such. :D

The manga is tweaked a bit, but I don't think that it has more detail.
The parts where it matches the anime are the strongest. Where it doesn't, it kind of lacks.
In the manga, Shinji is more of an outright -------- than a sad case.
It'd be interesting to hear the opinion from someone who had read the manga 1st.
tweaked? yes, i believe so - it more centered on the characters than the mysteries.
good thing is its in english! :D

Getting the Graphic Novels is a great idea! I hear that it would have a different ending as opposed to the animated series because it was done during the animated series' run. I think it also goes into more detail than the animated one, and i think Shinji's a bit more mature... he doesn't cry as easily too.
Rei talks a little bit, and you get to see her conversation with Gendo on that episode where she smiles and greets him and shinji watches from his Eva.
Asuka and Shinji's romantic relationship is much more obvious on this one too... it gives you hints, well... they do in the anime too... but i dont think she's mean mean to him... she's mean like to him... ehehehhe...
I have the third graphic novel in japanese, and have seen the 1-4 translated in English released by Viz. I only see manga sold around these parts once a year... that's how crappy it is to live where i'm from... there's barely any japanese animation... people are reduced to seeing sailormoon, pokemon, digimon, and dragon ball... and i'm not saying that they suck, and sometimes they do, but i'm getting sick of hearing and seeing them already!!!

Actually, that's a pretty good assessment. Shinji is a lot more of idiot than just a plain loser in the manga.
There's also about as much character development as in the series
I still think there's as much mystery though. I've only got the first book, which only covers the first genesis, but they have comparatively the same level of mystery with Seele and such.

The manga and anime are totally different! It has even been said in the letters section of the manga that some of the angels will come in a different order. Also, in the manga, Shinji lived with his aunt and uncle before being summoned, not a teacher.
I can garantee that there will be many things in the manga that will set it apart from the anime.

Well, I don't know for myself how different they are, since I've only got the first book, so I'll have to take your word for it. :D
By the way, I was just flicking through mine, and I noticed that although the speech is all in English, all the sound effects are in Jap! I just thought it was a bit dodgy . . . . . .

I dunno... i have the japanese version, and a friend of mine has the english one. If i wanna know what the heck those people are saying... i consult the english manga... ehehhee...
It's better to have some of them translated in English than the whole thing... The last time i picked up a YYH Doujinshi with everything translated to english was a mess... sort of like bad dubbing in america with Eva... Misato sounds like a wannabe.
Nairohe, if you are talking about the "bed-switching thing", I think that's just a mistake in the art...there's a webpage about the manga that explains that, in a way...
I do sympathize with your "crappy place" feelings, as I feel the same way..
I bought my Novels at Amazon.com, its cheaper

hmmm... yes, i'm going to by the manga/graphic novels as soon as i have the money to... i estimate that including s&h, it'll cost fairly 90 {u s}dollars. blegh to that, ------' expensive... but anything eva's worth it. oh, and lord phoenix... i'm afraid that destiny holds its turns.

I have Vol. 1-4 of the graphic novels and they are great. They are a slightly different take on the series since Anno is not in creative control of the process. I got them at http://www.animenation.com and they were not too bad in price. However, I do recommend them to everyone who likes Eva.
