In anime episode number 18, Konno Mitsune comforts Sara McDougal, foster daughter of Seta, in an uncharacteristically motherly and kind manner. She enquires why she is unalbe or unwilling to return to her natural parents in the USA.

The reply was that "It was such a big house, but I was not allowed to go anywhere else!!"

Then Kitsune saw something that shocked her. On the back of Sara's neck was a faint yet visible mark that was difficult to identify due to the poor quality of the fansubbed tape. Could it be a scar from a beating?

This could imply the most confronting issue of "Love Hina" thus far: is Sara adopted by Seta so she could escape from violent and abusive parents?

On a side note: Mitsune offering to be Sara's mother immeadietly afterwards is positively one of the most tender and touching scenes in recent anime, and succeeded in stealing my heart and making Mitsune my 2nd favourite Love Hina girl next to good old Su.

They never say upfront whether or not Sara was abused. From the high quality divx eps i have, even those aren't very clear in showing whehter or not it is a scar. Its very faint.

When i saw that episode I was under that impression that she was abused and also neglected by her real parents.

Personally I think she is better off with Seta-san.
