Why would you even bother to watch it on theatres when you could just pop in the tape and watch it that way? Or when it comes out on DVD pop in the DVD and watch it that way? So what if its on the big screen... you know whats gonna happen right???

Some people find it worthwhile to watch a movie on the big screen than on a TV. I would not mind watching it on the big screen.
id definately go see akira at the cinema... even if its just for the bike chase close to the start of the film... there is so much to take in during that scene... its so well done

I'd see it in a theater...:D...Arika rocks!
I bet that if it does come out nationwide, it won't be shown anywhere near where I am...unless it's an arthouse release.

Is there are a theatrical release date set? I heard that the Akira DVD is already coming out in July.

I just checked out the Pioneer site and it's just out in New York and LA. It's a limited run so that means it'll only be in the big markets. I'm sure it'll be in Washington DC so it looks like time for a road trip, if it's shown there.

There is a cinema which is now closed but used to show classic movies. I saw Akira and Ghost in the Shell there on the big screen. Ghost in the Shell wasn't helped that much by a big screen but Akira definetly was. The colours jumped out at you and the bike chase at the start my friends....superb! Akira does benefit greatly from a big screen and surround sound! The only thing was that I saw the old version and the dubbing was very, VERY noticable on big screen. Hopefully the new dub will be more in sync and not as ridiculous. Although I'm gonna miss Kaneda's voice.

I think the opening "construction" sequence oif GitS with the massive chanting music is definitely enhanced in a big cinema.
Unless your home system is PHAT!

My system is phat. And it does sound very good. Kusinagi's battle with the tank at the end is also great. I can't wait for Akira in Dolby 5.1!
I'll miss Jimmy Flinders as Kaneda. Jimmy is aka Max from Robotech and Master from Metal Gear Solid.
