Alright, in ep. 22, The Birth Of Nerv/Weaving A Story II: The Oral Stage, we hear what appears to be Gendo's 'maiden' name: Rokubungi. After he married Yui Ikari, his last name changed, obviously, to Ikari.
Is this SOP in Japan? For example, if Toji were to marry Hikari, would her name become Hikari Suzuhara, or would his name become Toji Horaki?
I'm sure someones going to correct me on this, but it can go either way. Gendo (supposedly) chose to take Yui's name because her family had a higher social standing.
i think it would have something to do with class. as long as your family is of higher status, whether you be the man or woman, the name gets carried over. in the case of Gendou, Yui's family had a higher status than Gendou's hence the use of Ikari and not Rokubungi

Ah...so what do you think sounds better/more realistic: Toji Horaki or Hikari Suzuhara? I'm leaning towards the second option, myself...

I would lean towards Touji Horaki.

It is getting a bit strange, but why fight the feeling? :D
Think about Misato Ryouji or Kaji Katsuragi... the second doesn't sound too bad.

Um...wouldn't it be Ryoji Katsuragi? Kaji calls himself Ryoji Kaji, not Kaji Ryoji...Kaji's his last name.
And I personally think that Kensuke Ayanami has a good sound...not advocating anything beteen said characters, though...
