Can you watch the movie without the series and still enjoy it?

You can. The movies take place before the series and follow their own storyline. So, you can watch them without knowing the series and still enjoy them. Trust me, they're just fab! ;)

Also, whereas Lina is a flawed yet kind hearted soul in the TV series, she is a greedy, amoral and mean-spirited and unlikable little wench in the OVA and Movies.

In other words, since the OVA/Movie Lina is SO unlikable, you are not missing anything watching them. Stick with the TV serries.

I think I've only seen a few episodes of Slayers, and it struck me as a comedy. Is that right? I remember even though I really didn't know the characters or anything, I thought it was really funny. Is the rest of it that way?

The reason why I'm asking is because I was considering getting the series, but my husband didn't look interested until I told him that I thought it was a comedy. Maybe that will sway him. Then again, who cares? I make the money anyway.

Yes indeed. Like "The Phantom Menace", it merely allows you to explore another facet of characters you have grown to love (or hate).

And as to Ms Chasta's queary, this series does gain some substance later on, and can sometimes become surprisingly romantic, touching or even poignant. As a matter of fact, the drivign issue and focus of "Slayers Try" (the 3rd series) is racism and genocide.

Slayers, unlike other fantasy comedies, sets bricks of comedy upon a frame of substance, resulting in a stably entertaining and solid foundation.

First of all, yes, it's simple to watch the movie without ever seeing the series! They are tottaly different, but it's cool to be able to know that the little boy is like Gourry's grandpa (it is that, right?).
Sencond, It's a great series, not only is there humor, but there's drama, love, and cool magic!!! I love the series and would recomend it to anyone. The only thing is that the first serie's animation isn't very good, but it gets better.

finished the movie, i liked it. Anyone notice the subtitling seemed incomplete when the thief was explaining why they call her Lina "dragon" I thought it was good, but a little shallow in terms of plot.
