View Full Version : Why can't they let Ashram Win for once!
No offense to the parm fans out there, but a question that i keep having is why not let the amazingly skilled swordsman Ashram win, he is by far the superior swordsman between hiself and parn. He may at first seen like the bad guy trying to conquer world, but doesn't he only want to unite Lodoss?
-spolier-
It was a shame that he got killed off in the OVA, but in the TV series you see he cares for his people when they leave lodoss and venture to find a new homeland. His honor and courage is what mage the preist of war join him in the tv series instead on Kashu who ...well enough spoliers... kill a certain someone unfairly

Kashue killed Beld because he panicked. He felt his honor was forfiet compared to the lives of his kingdom. Still, his dishonorable duel with Emperor Beld is what made King Kashue refuse to be honored as a hero.
As for Ashram, you should remember that he beat Parn in Episode 15 quite easily. In the final episodes, Parn and Ashram were virtual equals, but thats because Parn has had 15 years of experience, so they are both legendary swordsmen.
Ashram wants to unite Lodoss, yes, but he is misguided in HOW he wants to unite Lodoss. You see, Ashram is not really evil, he is just misguided from Emperor Beld's ambitions, and these ambitions continued to affect Ashram after Beld's death. In a D&D game, Ashram would be Lawful Evil.
You can see Ashram develop as the series goes on. His attempt to take the Scepter of Domination to unite Lodoss was pure Tyranny. His attempt to conquer lodoss through gaining the support of the occupied citizens of Kanon (and eventually do the same to all the other kingdoms) was still wrong, because he conquered the kingdom through war, but involved less tyranny. When Ashram made the final decision to leave and start a new chapter for his Marmo Kingdom somewhere else; THAT is when Ashram realised what he really needed to do.

True true Robo! In virtually all the DnD worlds I have seen, Ashram would have DEFINED Lawful Evil. He is the quintessential Black Knight (ankoku no kishi) My campaign features an Anti-Paladin named Gregarious who fills the same role. I disagree with you on one point however. I believe that by the time he rallies the people of Kanon he has underwent his change. By that time he already has a plan and is making it work. Also, war isnt evil, war for a bad reason is evil.

The War of Kings WAS a war for bad reasons. Ashram's goal was to escape the monster-ridden island of Marmo and build a New Kingdom elsewhere for his subjects. Conquering other kingdoms and using their land to build your new city is utterly wrong. Ashram just didn't realize at that time.
Remember, in one episode, Ashram talked about how he suddenly realized that the people of Lodoss will not accept the people of Marmo. Thats why he boarded the ships and let Kanon be liberated rather than defend it to their last.

So true. But I dont think Ashram nor is motiv to be evil. He just want the best for is peoples and that's what drive him.

Regerdless of how evil Ashram is, he should have easily defeated Parn in each of their encounters in the OVA. The way Parn is made into a master swordsman over the length of a few monthes really annoyes me.

Rule No 1 of being a hero:Now matter how clueless,cowardly,clumsy,weak,helpless you are,you'll always beat the bad guys,now matter how strong,clever,powerful,dedicated they are.
hiya, i'm new here.
actually i think that Ashram still won in the end.
not sure if you guys noticed, cause Parn actually stabbed at nothing, while Ashram's sword actually scratched Parn's face.
well, in my opinion, Parn's a rather sucky knight. Cause his fighting skill aren't really that good and always rely on others to save his ass -_-;;

Wrong really, If you would notice Asharm's face at the end of the dual and the position parn's sword was... he actually was able to hit ashram's shoulder... good thing he had armor there.
