I picked up the first Graphic Novel yesterday on my way home from Uni and man is it different to the series. I think it was made before the series. Its REALLY different storywise. Anyone else here read it? Which do you think is better?

I have only looked at the Manga. Since I don't like the artwork, and I noticed the story does not resemble the Anime I hav'nt taken it any further. Is the story any good?

Same here. I'm not a big fan of the style. The faces are too long or something...

I don't like the manga. I like the artwork, but not the story.
Guy dies heroically, but no one notices. And there are very few jokes.

Its reasonable... guy was never really developed as a character though, as there was almost no "get the crew together" bits... kind of disappointing. But Ruri is still Ruri, which is the main thing... where my Ruri clone, dammit??

There ARE some really funny bits in the manga...

such as: Akito finds out that Yurika is the captain...

Akito: Did you say Yurika?
Yurika: Yes, Yurika Misumari.
Akito: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! LET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!! KEEP ME AWAY FROM HER!!!! THAT WOMAN IS CURSED!!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!

First of all, though I can't be sure, I think the manga has only gotten as far volume 4 in Japanese so it is my guess that it came after the anime.

Next, the author of the Nadesico manga is the same one that wrote Silent Mobius. From what I've read so far, the story branches from the anime practically as soon as the Nadesico launches. The story seems a fair bit darker than anime, more along the lines of Silent Mobius (I say this only based on what I know of the anime series as I haven't read the manga).

***Potential Spoiler***
The enemies aren't even from Jupiter. From what I can tell, they are from a different dimension. Probably because the author wrote Silent Mobius where the enemies were also from another dimension. Also, their motives a different.

The tulips became monolithes (I don't think I spelt that right) so the theme of flowers is quite crushed.

As for jokes, there aren't many, at least not as often as the anime. One that I can think of occurs during the time Akito loses his sight. A short time earlier, he had his piloting nanobot tattoo upgraded to a five senses interface so to compensate, he just remained linked to the Aestavalis and used its eyes. The joke comes when he starts doing things the Aestavalis wouldn't do such as sleeping and reading manga.

hmmm... the manga was done after the anime, so the plots DO diverge.

I like after the tattoo upgrade, when Akito is out on the surface of the Nadesico... and makes eye contact with another AestiValis... not to mention is standing there shivering in space.

That little robot, 98, is pretty cool. He also interfaces with Akito's AestiValis.
