Fly me to the moon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fly me to the moon, shown at end of each episode with a variatuion of it almost each time. Their is around 20 versions of this song. This (to me) is a really bad song, it shows no releivance at all to eva, I see no point in it at all, so many better songs could of been used. But it is in English, so was this song used in the Japanese version of EVA, if so why pick an English song, with such bad lyrics. Also why make 20 variations of the song. Thanks.

I liked it, the variations, the siloette of Rei, especially in the later episodes where things were going not so well for our beloved pilots.
Sort of reminisent of the former days, the aloof Asuka, the the delicate Rei, the felicious Misato (i think i just made up a word there). Lovely, simply lovely.

I feel that it represents Shinji's constant wish to run away and escape from reality.

It means whatever you want it to mean. First of all I love that song so don't diss it. Second of all I believe the scene is symbolic of Shinji's mind. Remember in Weaving a Story 2 ral stage(episode 20) when Shinji was absorbed and his mind was going nuts and he saw that scene. It most likely was underwater or from the mothers womb. The moon shining on it could of been his main image of Rei. Remember the first conversation he had with her right before they went to fight Ramiel. She was standing by the moon. That would of been a mental association and since she is a clone of him momma it would be tied to the womb. That is the place where life begins. Fly me to the moon sort of symbolized his desire for love. to escape with the lyrics "let me see what spring is like, on Jupiter and Mars" and so on and so on. So it makes perfect sense. Anno wanted it to confuse you but he couldn't get da Cap!!!

mmm thanks for that info. No I don't think we are reading into it to much, I believe Anno selected ALL the music in the series for special meanings and qualitys. But was it used in the Japanese version, since written by Frank Sinatra, I would imagine so.

It definitiely was used in the Japanese version because they wouldn't of just changed it. If they changed Japanese songs to English they would of done the same for a cruel angel's thesis. do I have a point here?

I have seen a few anime where NEW songs are written or used for sequnces. Because the American/Australian/British version of NG is edited, with some things taken out. I just thought they could of added that song.

acyually i think the number of versions of Fly me to The Moon comes to something like 28. If anyone's got Sē works count them (before you hand the cd's to me that is)
so there's actually more versions then there are Episodes, go figure.

~!for those who have not yet watched the EoE movie, some spoiler content follows!~
Like Cap'n says, don't go dissing this song just because you don't have the depth to appreciate it and its relation to the series. It was written and sung by the great late Frank Sinatra, so have some respect. It's also a personal favorite of mine, but that's beside the point.
The song is deeply related to the series. I'm surprised that Anno was able to dig out a song that suited his work so fittingly. The moon is a prominent symbol throughout the series. Didn't you notice how often it shows up in the series? Did you notice that the Lance of Longinus is "flown to the moon"? It later falls to the moon's surface after being in lunar orbit for a while.
Rei is often associated with the moon as well. This is only fitting, because after she returns to Lilith, she turns the Geofront into a black moon, and collects souls(?) of people during the 3rd Impact.
