The preacher thing is an obvious cover up, so who the heck is he really? I haven't seen the last 3 or 4 episodes yet, waiting for DVD 8 to come out, but I don't really mind being spoiled.

\Burn a fatty spoiler below\\

I think he may be a renegade Gung-Ho Gun, because in ep.16 Fifth Moon (?), Raidei says something about 'it's you' or something, implying he knew Wolfwood from before and stuff. Then he says something about 'if they work together'. If someone says something that trusting to another, I'm guessing they once knew each other. So Wolfwood might be a former Gung-Ho. After all, Chapel, one of the Gung-Ho Guns, also is a 'priest' and possesses a Cross Gun; one exactly like the one Wolfwood has. That's some imposing evidence.

Apparently Wolfwood was trained from a young age by Capel the Evergreen, one of the gung ho guns. Although I don't think it is explicitly stated, I think he was an orphan who was basicly raised by Chapel as an apprentice. He does have a church that cares for orphans, and he provides money for them as a hired gun (an assasin), this was hinted to in episode 9. He is not an official gung-ho gun, the reason I say this is because in episode 15, when the gung-ho guns where brought together, the only one mentioned as missing was Chapel. Being an apprentice to Chapel meant he was familiar with the gung-ho guns and their plans.

~SPOILERS~

I was thinking the same thing that Ikidomari said but then at the end of episode 22 you see another man with a cross similar to Wolfwood's and an apple in his hand. He's also shown for a little bit in the previews and you see a younger Wolfwood also. I'm now theorizing that the unknown man is the real Chapel and Wolfwood was probably his apprentice. That's just my theory though. We'll have to wait and see when the next volume comes out.

Wow. As soon as I hit submit I see Manta posted shortly before me. Looks like my theory is good :).

that is exactly what I was thinking, but I didnt know who Chapel was as I haven;t seen the end yet. I saw the preview withthe guy with the cross and I was like he has to be an Ex gun ho gun or a renegade one

thanks guys

SPOILER DISCUSSION

I honestly don't think that Wolfwood is a member of the gung-ho guns, I am specificly mentioning the anime here, I don't know if he was that in the manga. All the indications in the series were that he wasn't really a member.
