I sort of found this episode disturbing, being that most of the eps are odd, but this one sort of bothers me alot:(

As I thought; the Shinobu Kissing episode, (I just checked).

It's a little weird, but you can eliminate most of the weirdness with Kaolla's intent. Akiko could've been acting on Kaolla's request, and Kaolla just wanted to do what Shinobu wanted. In all honesty, I had to watch it twice to understand. I was a little distracted by all of the fanservice...

I dunno... I thought this ep was rather cute. ^^

Another factor to consider was the naivity of all three of them.

I was just about to start the exact same thread.

I found episode 13 to be very disturbing. I have no idea why they decided to make an episode like that. If I was going to show this series to anyone, then I would definetly leave this episode out.

I didn't find anything disturbing about that episode, and as cloakactive, i found it rather cute.

Its kinda cute, they played too much on the girls-girls thing though. The emphasis on first kiss is shown here as overrated, althought important its not the end of the world if you don't do it. It also has peer pressure as a theme, the kissing part and why everybody do it(or not).

It was a very tender and sweet episode in which one may look back to the days when life was simpler and less cynical, and the wondrous moments when we discover the beauty of mature love for the very first time.

Su, in particular, was exceptionally kind and sweet in this episode. (Sniff sniff, wipes tear.) She is such a nice person!!

It was also prolly the only episode where she acted somewhat normal instead of her usual psycho self.

I think it helps if you take into acount that kissing is given more weight in Japan that it is in most other countries. It's considered sexual enough that parents often won't kiss in front of their children. Here, we often kiss relatives we haven't seen in a long time, and we may even kiss friends in the case of girls. At first I thought it was sort of odd that Shinobu was making such a big deal out of it, but later I realized that she wasn't thinking about the act of kissing so much as her coming of age-kissing signifies being old enough to be somewhat sexual, as does the example of wearing lipstick.

That's why it's important at the end that Shinobu says 'we're still children'-she's not going to let peer pressure cheat her out of her childhood, and she's not going to become sexualized until she's ready for it. There's always the business of kids who can't wait to be adults and adults who wish they were as innocent as children, so I think this episode has an important message not too grow up too fast.

That theme also comes into play with Kaolla-she can 'choose' whether or not she wants to be an adult, as all of us can really, she just does it in the most literal sense possible. Among other things, LH is about not letting other people force you to grow up:).

Well Said, Ms Yui.

To grow up without having experienced the joys of childhood is the greatest tragedy of all...

Well put, mis Yui :)

I said something similar like that, but it doesn't seem as good as you worded it.

Episode 13 is my favorite in the whole series. I really like it because it is so cute, and Shinabu is so cute in it. And, as I interprete the great post by Yui_Reborn, the episode states a major underlying theme of the series.

BTW, that's what I love about anime. There is the surface plot (i.e. who is the girl of the promise) but when you look further there is something with much more substance.

Some may find it disturbing that the awkward girl befriended by Shinabu and later by Su looks like she exhibits some "lesbian tendencies". But the other girls are all quite normal, so it really doesn't lead to anything.

A taboo on this (i.e. censorship) , pretending that such things never happen, or are completely evil is worse than allowing the creators to express themselves.

I wasn't disturbed by episode 13 by any means... I just didn't particularly like it very much.

I thought the manga version of that sequence was much better. The part with Tama and Shinobu was great. Plus I don't like the addition of Shinobu's friend (I forgot what her name was...) in the ep. It kinda throws everything off. The same reason I don't like Kentaro either...

*shrug* It's one of my favourite episodes.

Yeah, it really depends on the individual which LH eps. you like the most, maybe even moreso than other series, because you can relate more to the characters personal problems. If the episode addresses something that you have some emotional stake in, you're going to like it better than someone who doesn't see it that way........

I like that episode a lot too, because I identify with Shinobu-chan's confusion. It's that age where you're first starting to discover sex, but you feel bad about it, which makes it all the more interesting, which makes you feel even more guilty, etc. Plus I love it when the show features her crush on Keitaro, it's adoreable.

About Taichi, Shinobu's friend.......she is indeed one weird little girl. I think she's in there to flesh out Shinobu's character a bit, because she brings out Shinobu's obvious nurturing side, and another side we never see otherwise-her superior side. Don't yell at me Shinobu-philes, but I think one of the reasons she hangs out with Taichi is because she gets to feel superior to her (and being cooped up with a bunch of beatiful older girls, it's not surprising why she might feel the need to be the superior one once in a while..........) Otherwise, her character is completely selfless, so I think they needed to give her at least one character flaw..........

The irony of that ep is, Shinobu is trying so hard to grow up, and in so many ways she's much more mature than the rest of them.

Indeed. Shinobu is the ONLY girl in the entire cast who emotionally stable and in control of her tempermental faculties.

Well thats debatable.

Ronin Aquila
05-09-01, 02:55 AM
Well... I stand corrected...

... considering that she was so embarrassed to get a CPR from Keitaro (she was pretending to have swallowed water) that she inflicted QUITE A VICIOUS KICK to Keitaro's crotch.

But that is thus far the ONLY incident in which Shinobu-Chyan EVER used senseless violence on Keitaro, as opposed to the countless plethora of times ALL the other girls did.

Thus, while not in complete control of her emotions, Shinobu is STILL the most mature of the five main girls considering that she IS the LEAST violent of them all.

Yui_Reborn
06-09-01, 03:22 PM
Yeah, and she also takes responsibility for her actions, which a lot of the other girls are unwilling to do at times.

And she gets stronger as the series goes on.........Look at the way she acts in ep. 24! Shinobu rules! *holds up little Shinobu flag*

Heh, it's so hard to have a fave char. in LH, they're all really sympathetic and loveable.............well except that Sakata Kentaro fellow...........

Hai. Though the entire cast may seem perfectly handsome/cute/beautiful, its their adorably human imperfections that makes it so easy for us to relate to them.

The whole cast is cute I agree. Its not as easy as say... Tenchi to get a favourite.

I found nothing wrong with the episode in question. To me there were no real lesbian undertones, thats why you're all uncomfortable isn't it ;) I saw it more as Shinobu building up this great image on what her first kiss would be like and that when she was kissed it would be the instant she made the transition from girl to woman.

The actual kiss itself to me at least showed probably the letdown she felt at that point, relief that she had experienced it and the innocent affection experienced by Kaolla. To me it was a well scripted life experience for Shinobu and totally natural.
