I first saw Akira about 7 or 8 years ago when I was out of town. I believe the SciFi channel was showing it. At any rate, it totally blew me away. If you've seen Ghost in the Shell, the animation is similar (because it's the same crew?). I personally enjoyed the movie a great deal. It was my first true exposure to anime with Cowboy Bebop coming many, many years later -- reviving my interest.

Akira the Movie is only a snippet of Akira the Manga. So you are kinda dropped into the plot and not much is explained. But, that's why it's so good to me. Akira is one of those movies that gets better with each viewing, IMHO. Great characters, great animation for it's time (1989?), and some truely mind-bending scenes on par with Lain and Evangelion. I give Akira :up::up: and can't wait to get the new DVD.

Why did he say it was not good? Bad story? Bad drawings/animation? I thought it was a really good anime and still is. I think that some animes don't compare to it because Akira is a classic with a strong story in my opinion.

Close, it was 1988.

I saw Akira about 3 months ago and I thought it wasn't that good. It was probably wonderful back in its day but compared to today's anime, it's not that great.

I can see what you mean. It has alot of nostalgia value to a lot of Anime Fans as it was the first piece of Anime they saw. It was mine (Well Robotech was my first and I have already preordered the first boxed set :))
So while it doesn't really compare to newer fare it will still have a place in my collection along with Robotech and Macross (hopefully)

Akira DVD is coming out in July. Go here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005BJPO/o/qid=990075962/sr=2-2/103-7083926-3111833) for more info at amazon.
It was the best 10 years ago, but the translation was always so so. Never mind it couldn't match the manga for the in depth story, but it was pretty darn good. It is a visual masterpiece and the new digital remastering andDolby 5.1 sound should make it a treat to see again. The first time I saw it was in a local theater in Japanese with no subtitles. I didn't know what the heck was going on, but it was cool to watch.
Yeah, ought to be great with 5.1 surround sound. Imagine the battle between Kaneda and Tetsuo with remastered sound. :)
AKIRA!! :D
Well, i'm a total Akira nut^^; Like Drizzten said its a movie wich gets better with each viewing. At first i tought it was a good movie but nothing more, but after rewatching it a lot of times, i now absolutely love that movie! It ranks in my top 3 movies along with EoE and Nausicaa of the valley of the wind.
One thing, i didn't like GitS but LOVED Akira, is there something wrong with me?^^;

The one thing that always bothered me was the fact it seemed like someone was screaming every 30 seconds. By todays standards the animation is prolly ok. Back then it was rather revolutionary for its time. :D If i remember correctly that is. :p
Oh i liked the screaming, they had cool voices in both the french dub and the japanese versions^^.
"TETSUOOOOOOO!"
"KANEDAAAAAAAA!"
Well to say the story for Akira is not deep is an understatement I think. And maybe that's what threw alot of people off (???). And the fact that alot happened at once did make it alittle hard to follow. Well I love Akira and have seen it many MANY times and Katsuhiro Otomo (the creator) is a huge art influence for me.
Anyone know if it WILL come out to Australia?

Ahhh, Akira!
One of my personal favourite animes of all time!
It DOES suffer from trying to squeeze too much stuff in too short a time, which can make it a bit hard to follow. But I love it for lots of reasons.
It's one of the only films I've seen where I really feel very sorry for the villain, and feel that it de-lineates the concepts of good and evil.
And the final half hour is completely mind blowing. The animation is cool, if somewhat odd if compared to today's standards.
However, this film really is great, and has some of the most insane, mad scenes you'll see in a while!
I haven't read the manga and still loved this, but I hear it's even cooler if you read the manga too... so if you can find it, it might be worth a good read!
(Oh, and I was somewhat unimpressed with Ghost in the Shell myself... I just felt the characters were, if you'll excuse the pun, rather two dimensional and I didn't really care about them much...)

ARGGG!!! *starts pulling out hair*
Well I love them both...but NOT likeing GitS?? thats insane!
Yes, most of the characters are two dimensional...they are sort of, well ANDROIDS! The point of GitS is not to fall in love with Major Kusinagi, but to understand where she is coming from. The story is its relation and meaning to our own world. I mean if you think about it, its similar to Lain. She is not a very animated and lovable character...however what she does and the story that involves her is what makes it interesting.
The question is...In life, do we speak with our own voice...whos "shell" do we have? Our own, or the one society has imbedded into us?

Sorry, but I've always had great trouble getting into stories where I don't care about the characters.
It's also the reason why I thought that 'Lord of the Rings' was not such a great book. (Here come the militants!!)

*Gasp!* You didn't like Ghost in the Shell?! You must be tarred, feathered, and run outta town! Just kidding! Despite what some people think, you can like or dislike any damn series/movies you want. To each his own, right? Although, personally, I like GitS. :)

Well, not to make this a "lol" post^^;.
It was raining all day today, so i watched Akira again^^;. I have again noticed more and more little details, one wich makes me wonder if my eyes are playing with me or if Takashi is related to Akira(he has 28 in his hand wich is Akira's number, unless i've misread because i believe i've heard the Colonel call him #26) and that in Tetsuo's first hallucinations we see parts of the end of the movie.(big Tetsuo and even i believe having seen the Kaori crushed part)
Also my dad is finaly thinking of getting a DVD player, and i made it my duty for the Akira SE DVD to be the first DVD i'll buy. :D
Actually I found Ghost in the shell to be a very pointless movie. I didnt like it at all. The only thing I like is Shirow, which I have like every pic he has done 8).
Akira never stood out as a major anime to me, even back in the day when I saw it like 8 years ago. I still might buy this though since it is a classic.

Matter of opinions, of course. :D
You gotta admit, the opening theme to GitS is pretty good. Same with the Tetsuo "Carol of the Bells" as I call it.

Looks like Eva'll be getting another commission off of me sooner than I thought.
The rerelaese of Akira has been a long awaited day for me as my poor VHS tape has been abused and used so much that not even tracking on the vcr can heal its wounds. Akira is THE anime, it began the craze and IMHO the animation is on par with some of today's anime. The gang fight was one of the most awesome scenes of that movie and the way the taillights of the bikes just flashed by the screen still captivate me.

This is one of those times where it really sucks that anime movies dont have more showing in nationwide movie theatres....
Ok guys heres the thing...unless you live in the NE near New York you guys all missed the showing of the NEW akira in specialized theatres. I was one of the lucky few to find out about it...(cause god knows they keep all of it under raps) and actually go to see AKIRA on the BIG SCREEN!!!!!!! All I have to say..is that there is at LEAST 1/2 hour more footage in it. And for all of you who didnt know what the hell was going on when you first saw it...all your questions will be answered my friends. It was a masterpiece. I really feel sorry for everyone who lives far away that you missed this chance...DVD is cool and all ...but this was in a theatre...totally awesome.
ALso my opinion on this movie is as follows. Every single anime fan should have at one point seen this movie. If you havent, you arent a true fan. I would have to say that AKIRA is a pivotal film in anime history and everyone should at least see it. I remember the first time I saw it...I didnt know what the hell was going on...but it was still good cause it was something that caught your eye. Its just one of those cult things that you have to do in order to be initiated. It just seems that it has always been that way to me...anyone care to disagree/agree?

Okay... First of all, I think those of you that are saying Aikra isn't that great- should take a chill pill. I'm 19, I just saw Akira about a year ago... I saw it about a month after seeing my first anime, Princee Monoke. ...For about the first 20 minutes of Akira, I was utterly confused- I swear I must have been completely stumped, because I looked over and my brother and he had this "poop"-eating grin on his face and he was slowly nodding his head. I felt I had missed something... But after those twenty minutes or so passed... I was so into it, World War III starting couldn't have phased me.
Second... Those that are saying Akira's graphics and everything are horrible. Look at Star Wars (or Casablanca, or Gone With the Wind, It's a Wonderful Life, Indiana Jones --I could go on)... Sure, they might look crappy now, but they are all great movies. <sigh> Quit the fussing and the fueding. I believe Akira is a classic, I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but that's the way I feel. We are all VERY different... So take a few prozac and take a nap. :)
Third, GitS was good- to me. But there is better... NGE alone, was much better- MY OPINION. <cool down> :) That's my opinion... Take it... Or leave it. :)
