Ok... I just got back from Anime Central, and there were some interesting conversations.

The foremost being this. Love Hina "borrows" a lot of things from other anime series (i.e ranma 1/2, tenchi, etc... etc....)

I'll admit it did "borrow" a lot of ideas but I still believe it stands on its own.

So what do all of you people think? Does it stand on its own even though it "borrowed" a lot of ideas from other series? Do you think even if it didn't use those other ideas it would stand on its own?

More questions will come when i can remember all the points that were brought up. Well? what are you waiting for?!? Post already!

ARgh. :D

There is no such thing as originality. Every seemingly unique book, or television program has borrowed from something older, up to where all concepts were formulated from their base components. Therefore, I see Love Hina as just another Anime, that uses old school concepts to meet an end.

Yes Love Hina used overcooked elements, but i feel that its the way they presented these elements that make it great. Even if a style of anime is old as the world, it can still be great and even surpass those from wich it picked from if done well.

Some of the best animes are made by parodying other series. Due to how well people recognize it as a series of its own and dont relate it mainly as a series that borrows from others.....proves it can stand well on its own. And proves itself as a series, not as a compilation.

Does all that really matter as long as you like it

sure its borrows from other stuff (like any other series), but by borrowing elements from a bunch of other series and putting them together the way they did, they made something original.
But really, who cares if its a copy or not, so long as you enjoy watching it, the rest dosent matter.

Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi, ya say? Gee, would that happen to be the idea of Love Interests? Because, just to inform you, that idea has been around for a LONG time. Sure, Tenchi, Ranma, and Love Hina all involve similar things. It's targeted to a similar audience. I mean, you wouldn't make a mecha flick for fans of Ranma, would you? It wouldn't make sense. You should create something that actually fits that genre. And they are all similar, yet incredibly diverse. Each series is it's own. You can give me any anime, and I can point out similar themes to at least three others. You can't make something completely and horribly original in every possible way, because almost everything has been done before at least once.

Before anyone wishes to rip my head off ( :heh: ) i just have to point out that my post was basically pointing out what the other people in the group discussion were trying to point out. So before you say "just to inform you (yea! you... cloak... the wierd guy)" please remember... I love this show as much as you guys... i just want to know what you think about such comments made. :D Ok... bye bye.

It's not like they borrowed the idea from series like Tenchi, Oh my goddess, etc. In Japan, this thing of the guy living with a bunch of sexy girls is like a genre on its own.
At first I didn't like Love HIna just because of its lack of originality, but after watching episodes 6 and 7 I absolutely loved it. Otohime-san is the best ^_^

Come to think of it, all anime ripped something else off. I agree to the idea that only the presentation that cuts it above the rest...

Hehe, cloak, I had the same conversation with some folks at ACen, and I told them all this - it does borrow from conventional romantic anime things such as the famous "Tenchi syndrome" as well as Naru being a kind of long lost sister for Akane...but it puts the elements together in a different way than those anime do, making for its own unique story. Another series that takes from other series is Parallel Trouble Adventure Dual! - though this series does it on purpose, but it's a really funny series even though it's only 13 eps long.

Love Hina reminds me a lot of Tenchi, Ranma, and Maison Ikkoku all rolled into one. But I still loved the series, and I certainly can't wait to get my hands on it on DVD when it's finally commercially released.

BTW, most of the conversations I had were probably sparked by my choice of picture for my staff badge...

Out of curiosity... who were you speaking to? Do you know any of the #FY people? cuz thats who I was talking/fighting with. If you have no clue what i'm talking about forget about it.

By the way its nice that your now posting in other areas. :D And nice Badge Pic!

Hmmm..I don't remember who it was...I'm only on #acen in IRC so I probably didn't know them from the channel. Hehe.

Yes, thanks for the compliment on the badge pic. Actually, it was a last minute change - right before the deadline I had a Chichiri pic all ready to go. Two days before the deadline for badge pictures I saw 1-13 of Love Hina.

I made the change one day before the deadline ^_- It's definitely hard to find high quality Love Hina images on the web!

Love Hina kind of starts out as a predictable romantic comedy, but it breaks the mold by being more experimental and having more overall depth. By the end of the series, they start delving into the territory of that "dreams vs. reality" concept that is usually the playground of much 'higher brow' anime.

Also, I think the creators (either Akametsu or the creators of the show, I haven't read the manga yet so I can't comment on that), were very well aware that this concept had been done to death so they kind of played on that. The scenes where Keitaro gets the crap kicked out of him are much more over the top than we usually see in similar anime, and there's just so much excess in the girls and their costume changes and their mood swings, etc. However, unlike a lot of anime, I never felt the characters were being degraded in the process. You can tell it's a modern show, since the women are the REAL sexual predators-leaving the poor men overwhelmed. It's like Feminism taken to it's logical, ridiculous extremity. Even when Keitaro doesn't notice the girls, they tend to get more pissed at him for having the self-control not to notice them.

Love Hina and FLCL both share a similar theme of men who are surrounded by women's sexuality, but have been yelled at for so long not to objectify women, they feel overwhelmed more than excited by it. Social commentary?
