View Full Version : Why did Ashram fight Parn in the end?

1. Ashram doesnt fancy the idea of humans overstepping their boundaries (what he says to the possessed Wagnard);
2. Ashram kills Wagnard;
3. He still fights Parn, although it is clear Parn is about to stop the revival ritual;
4. He says that in this battle will be decided the victor in the struggle of light and darkness;
5. The resurrected Wagnard says "Kardis chose me, not you!"
Therefore, I tend to believe Ashram does try to take Wagnard's place as Kardis' resurrector. And that he's actually thoroughly evil (even approaching the chaotic alignment).

We are talking about the fight in the OVAs correct? Personally I think it was more of a Personal grudge fight then anything else. If you look at it, they are representatives of good vs evil as well. *sigh*
Still I'd have to say it was more of a Personal grudge fight due to the fact that I think Ashram didn't want to rule a land of nothing. Even he knew that ruling over nothing was not worthwhile (personal opinion... dont' hurt me :heh: )

I think that Ashram believed that he had lost everything. His Marmo Empire was defeated, his island mostly destroyed, the one person who loved him dead.
I think Ashram just didn't care if the world got destroyed. He fought and killed Wagnard to avenge the betrayal that led to the Fire Dragon Mountain incident.
Once Wagnard was dead, Ashram gave Parn one final test. If Parn beat him, then Parn could stop the Ressurection. If Ashram won, then the Destroyer would be revived and the world would end. Either way, I don't think Ashram cared.
If you look at Ashram in the TV series/novels, Ashrm knew of Wagnards plans for over 10 years, yet he never bothered to stop him. Ashram even told Wagnard face to face in episode 24 that he would not try to stop Wagnard. Ashram would lead his Marmo people somewhere else to rebuild their society. If Parn, spark and the others managed to stop Wagnard, so be it. If Wagnard won, then all would be lost and it wouldn't matter anymore.
I think Ashram's feelings in the OVA were similar to the TV series.
The grudge is also a possibility. After all, he fought Parn in the tV series just before evacuating just so they could have one last fight (I love the way that fight ends with them being equals).

Also Ashram is a warrior to the core,he wanted to know once and for all who was strongest,the darkness(Ashram) or the light(Parn)

Umm... I think Ashram fighted Parn over honnor and pride. It was more of a personnal thing that any other reason.

(Not sure how long I've had this account idle, I've lurked for a few months, and it's never been deleted, so... hi!)
It's been a while since I've seen Pirotess's death scene, but didn't he promise to her that he would rule all of Lodoss before his end, or something of the like? If he defeated Parn, he would have been th unquestioned ruler of Lodoss for the few minutes before Kardis destroyed the world.
Although it would only have been a superificial victory, and only to have lasted a few moments, it would be fulfilling his promise to Pirotess. His willingness to destroy all human life may have been his last act of humanity.
Or he simply could have been in a continuous bloodlust since that scene on the mountain ridge. Always a perfectly rational explaination for anyone late enough in a good series/movie.
(back to hiding and checking in every time I see the name until this account gets deleted.)

No, Ashram never made that promise to Pirotess. He just wanted to kill Wagnard to avenge her and get him back for betraying him.
As for fighting Parn, I believe Ashram didn't care anymore. His emperor and his love were dead, he had lost his empire, there was no hope of winning the war. There was nothing now, no victory he could attain except to beat Parn.
"Light...or Darkness. Between you and I, all will be decided."
In the TV series, Neither Ashram nor Pirotess died. He told Parn that he just wished to fight him one more time because he was going to leave and they would never see each other again. If he didn't fight him one more time to resolve their conflict, there would be an emptiness in his heart. Eventually they fought and recognized that they were not symbols of good or evil, but were simply two men who fought for what they believed in. After reaching this understanding, both decided that their fight was unnecessary and Ashram left, allowing Parn to help the others stop Wagnard.

I haven't seen the TV series, but if Pirotess lives, then I'll love it!! I cried for hours when she died. I have more pics of her than any other Lodoss char, and I named my dark elf on everQuest after her. Je t'aime, Pirotess!!

Yes, she lives. In fact, she never even comes close to dying.
Pirotess is not present at the battle at Fire Dragon Mountain. The battle in Fire Dragon Mountain is actually much bigger than the OVA one and involves a lot of individual duels and battles, one of the best being the duel between Ashram and King Kashue.
Pirotess comes into the TV series in episode 15.
