View Full Version : Who has seen Akira??
My friend rented it today, and we're gonna be watching it tomorrow. My question is; is it good?
hmmmmm......how to describe Akira??? well....one word comes to my mind; weird. you'll just have to watch it and see for yourself. i thought it was pretty good though
"TETSUO!!!!!!!!"
"KENEDA!!!!!!!!"
Akira has been said to be the movie that made Anime and Manga so popular.....When was it made? Late 80's?
It has it all: Action, wierd psychological scenes, blood :D
Everything a growing boy needs.....

I thought Akira was extremely good. :D
Late 80s? I thought that it was the early 80's, 84 I think. I liked it. Like many it was my first real anime experience, well Macross (Robotech) was technically but it was the first of the real adult oriented animes. I thought it was good although it was very very very weird
I stand corrected.....
Yeah...My first anime experience (though I didn't know it at the time) was watching Robotech in the morning before going to school....
I seem to remember that I didn't understand what was going on and would rather watch the Smurfs or He Man or something else....
Now I'm looking for the original Robotech series.... Anyone know where I can get it?
akira is absolutely brilliant
it was great animation, action, crazy music and a good plot.
it's actually quite a lot like nge, but the main characters motives are harder to associate with (to me).
the dub voice acting is shocking too : (

well i watched it 1 1/2 times and that was with my brain turned off... so not sure.... i liked it though
Thanks Ura ;) I appretiate it...
oh c'mon, i cant believe there are those among us who still havnt seen Akira! its like the turning point of Anime.
and you dont just like Akira but you actually LOVE it! - though i prefer Transformers the movie and Macross Plus over it, not to mention EoE. and like the forst two movies i mentioned, Akira is one of those classic Anime w/c is still worth watching and LOVING! :D
Yes i would like to see the original robotech myself agian as well, so Commander if you find it, let me know :)
As for Akira, Wings Of honemeasia (or what ever) was better in my opinion, i did not think that much of akira to be honest.
i have heard the manga is sooooooo much better as you actualy have an idea of what is going on.

I've seen Akira, it was like all of you said, weird, I like the part when Tetsuo goes on a rampage through neo tokyo the best.
"The great Akira has come to lead us!"

Akira, weird thats all I have to say and i like it
you'll have to see it more than once to get it
Good, my friend has it for seven days. :B:
Thanks everyone.
And he's bringing it to my house right now! Hehe, finally! And about the dub...we got the sub!
I own the tape and i don't find it "wierd".
That was amazing!! Confusing though... oy.
My friend let me borrow it tho, so i'm gonna watch it again tonight.

Ura sent me a nice link over ICQ...I'll foward it on :D
Yeah, Wings of Homminasie(?) was excellent...Long, full of religious refrences (Was that whole religious thing based on Christianity?) with some excellent action and a terrific climax...
And the music....Oh yeah!
Wings of Honneamese was better by me too. It had a massive christian influence but I liked the getting into space side of it more. Especially how the Space angency is seen as a joke and is used in the end to start a war wioth a rival country
Well, i'm off to watch Akira again. Hope i understand more this time. My friend said it was better the second time. :) Good Night.

Ok thats 3 differing spellings in 3 posts, hehe, i actually have to tape, but am just too lazy to look.
I would say yes the influence was christian, but also not at teh same time. The theft of the Immortal fire is from Greek mythology, (of course christianity can eb thougth of as greek monthesism)
(Man i must be dislexic)
Was it not this that got the budget for Akira?

i have not personally seen Akira...but my friends say that its mostly sex....are they right?
No. There is only one scene that has MILD nudity (a girl's boobs). Your friend doesn't know ----.
It does have a LOT of violence tho.
...
hmm...i must venture forth to correct my misguided friend...
Beat him round the head with it....Then watch it.....
Then watch something like 'Everyday is Sunday' and let him compare the two

Akira is pretty good, but IMO you can't watch it over and over again like you can with other anime like Ghosts in the Shell and Eva.
why can't we watch it over and over again? i got the tape and still enjoy watching it every now and then.
That's right...There is nothing in my anime collection that I'm tierd of......I keep watching an episode here and there of all the series I jave and I watch at least one movie (which includes Akira) on weekends....
But new stuff always gets priority :D...And I just got some
Later...Time to watch

i bought akira before i saw it and i was not dissapointed.the movie really lived up to my extremely high expectations(except in the dubbing department).the animation could still rival some of the stuff put out today.
the only thing that i hated was that the freakin' tape took two @$#% months to get to my house!!(because it was on backorder and i looked in my mailbox every day with high hopes)

hey... i can't believe there are still anime fans in the world who haven't seen AKIRA! {with the exception of most americans} don't tell me that there are also some of you who haven't seen HEAVY METAL also.
i saw AKIRA long ago {it was released in '84, i believe} and i was up and ready when they re-released in in '94! i wouldn't say it was "weird" at all... more intriguing. but yes... very good. a "CLASSIC" and all that. though, i highly recomend NEON GENESIS: EVANGELION and LAIN... {IF you like the stories that ---- with your head} take care, and hope you enjoyed it.

Seen Akira!!!
I got the Vcd on Akira. And damn was it awesome. Tatsuo goes on rampage in Neo Tokyo and seeing that priest ran over by a car on a bridge when Tatsuo release his deadly power to the Army...makes me wanna cry laughing when in the few of the scenes where the priest appear will say,"The great Akira will come to lead us"
What a joke!!
X.E.R.O out!!!
gyaaaa!!! [points to digitalboy's avatar] why does it look soooo goood? whats wrong with miiiiineee!!!!

He might be thinking about some other move... Akira is a pretty common Japanese name.
I thought Akira was excellent, though a bit weird. It didn't really have a moral, was just sorta suggesting.

Akira was made in 1988..look it up on imdb.com..as for the movie, it was pretty cool.. I didn't really like when Tetsuo expanded into a big fleshy mess, and the ending didn't explain much. To quote J. Parish (Toastyfrog) "If you learn anything from this movie, it will be the names of the protagonists." That says it all really.

i actually just recently saw akira. it was really weird, but i liked it. my only mistake was that i ate cookie dough ice cream while watching it. usually movies don't make me sick to my stomach while eating, but this one did. it was good anyhow. :P
