i would like to know if there is a connection between the manga and the anime!
i have read the manga so far (seven books and one special and is that all?!?!).
but there seems to be no connection between the stories (well there are some connections but it is not compareable to db or something similar i think).
now i would like to know something about the anime!
what is said about gourry or all the other characters that were never really introduced in the manga, do they have a background or something like that??
thanx for the help! :)

Slayers was originally a series of novels. It was turned into an anime, and a manga later. However, they differ widely. The TV series and manga follow the books fairly closely, I think, but they have different filler sections. However, after the second TV season, the TV series diverges completely from the books. Slayers TRY never existed in book format. I believe the books had Lina and Co. ending up facing Dynast instead. Effectively, Slayers has three continuities in other words. I know there are at least 8 volumes to the manga, probably more.

There are two Sureya-zu (or Slayers, whatever you want to call it) manga series: the only one released in America has about 6 issues and one TPB-manga and was drawn by Araizumi Rui sensei (the better mangaka IMO). This one doesn't follow the anime series nor the novels.
The other series never made it to the US (maybe, some day....) and is drawn by some other mangaka whom's name I can't remember right now (he/she isn't as good as Araizumi sensei). This series follows around the same path as the anime and the novels.

I know that there're nine manga volumes. All written by Hajime Kanzake but drawn by different artists. The first six mangas that were published in Germany are related to the first series and the movie and the first special manga includes stories that were published in the Dragon magazine and which probably took place before or between the series. The special one is drawn by Rui Araizumi. And there exists another special manga which is going to published soon, drawn by a different artist and related to the Try series as far as I know.

Gourry protects Lina 'cause he loves her!
*waves a flag reading Lina & Gourry 4eva!!*

Anyways, we don't know much about Gourry's past. He's a descedent of Rowdy Gabriev whom Lina helped in one of the OVAs when she was with Naga and travelled back into the past. Gourry's the owner of the SoL which is a family heirlom. We don't know about his family, what his parents are doing or if he has brothers or sisters. He once mentioned his grandma who made him promise to always be nice to children and women.
Not to forget that he's a mercenary. I guess he's travelling around since the age of 14 or 15 considering the fact that all of his friends he meets again while travelling around with Lina mention that it had been a long time since they last saw him, specially Sylphiel.

yeah...it's so sweet...I don't understand why people think Lina should ever be with someone else...

I have some of the manga and although they are quite different from the series, they also have many simularities...I can't wait til they start going into Try with the manga...Valgaav...:naughty:

I think Gourry just isn't bright enough to think of an alternative to travelling around with Lina. He doesn't have much of a choice in the matter though. Lina vowed to stick with him until he gives her the sword of light.

His honor makes him keep his keep his vow to be Lina's protector. I'm still not certain if he's in love with her or not. He only acts that way when she is in danger like when they fight one of the monster lords or when the Lord of Nightmares is taking her away.

*Spoiler*

Gourry did give the SoL away, so Lina would technically have no reason to stay with him.

What reminds me of one of these scenes in the first special manga. Lina asks Gourry if he plans to protect her and therefore stay with her forever. She meant this as a joke and was quite surprised to hear when Gourry said yes without long thinking. In fact, she blushed furiously and wondered if Gourry might be .... in love with her.
And then the last episode of Try.

*waves a flag reading Spoiler Alert*

Gourry doesn't have the SoL anymore so why does she still stay with him? Lina always said she just was with Gourry because of the SoL but then why didn't she simply left after he gave it away?

It's true that Gourry just showed how much he cared for her in extreme situations but that's just normal. It's in dangerous situation when you realize how much you care for a person and you show your true feelings. Remember the scene when Lina fell off that floating island and Gourry was extremely worried. And I mean extreme. Later he asked her to think of his feelings the next time.

And Lina? Just think of the moment when Gourry was taken away by Fibrizio. She chased after them until she collapsed. And she spent the next morning thinking about Gourry and not the SoL.

*Spoiler Alert ..... End*
