does anyone actually like merle? It doesn't have to be as your "fave" character...just do you like her....at all??

I thought she was cute in a "awww...lookit the kawaii catgirl!" way. Her jealousy of Hitomi was funny for about 3 eps and then it got old. But she's a young girl who has expected him for herself for so long...

I can't stand any of the dubbed voices. That's why subtitles are good. Subtitles are very good. :D

surprisingly i've only seen the dub and yet...i seem to like her! she's cute and funny!

I do respect Merle for standing up to protect Van later on against the other cat-girls working for Folkien. That was a particularly poignant moment. Merle by herself taking on two very impressive Guymelefs.

Well, I have to admit that I think that Merle is very cute. The only thing that she did that bothered me was when she was jumping up and down on the bad while Hitomi was crying. I know she meant well, but it was still wrong. Other than that she is a very cute character and definately brought some much needed comic relief.:lol:

She is pretty cute and has some great moments, yes Episode 15 was great. But teres one thing that gets on my nerves. "Van-Samaaaaaaaaa! Van-samaaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

I think Merle is an interesting part of Escaflowne. She may be a major nuisance sometimes but she has interesting qualities. Maybe she just behaves that way for her to forget her awful past.

You're right, after the 100th time you've heard/seen her screm "Van Sama" at the top of her lungs, it does get annoying...but she does get cute though :heh: I remember the episode when she just yoinked the pendulum off Hitomi's hand and ran off with it just because she thought it was pretty and shiny.

Yes, in the beginning, Merle was very childish. I hesitate to say annoying, however. She is no more annoying than a little brother or sister is.

Even though she shows childish traits, such as jumping on the bed while Hitomi was crying, she also shows very mature traits. Near the end of the series it seems that Merle's love for Van has changed from a childish infatuation into the love a sister has for her older brother. She knows Van is in love with Hitomi, and tells him to go to her (Hitomi).

Merle truly cares about other people. This is evidenced many times throughout the series, practically from the very beginning.
- All the times she asked Hitomi how she was doing
- The whole "Van-sama!" deal
- At the church giving out food to the children there and playing with them
- Praying in the temple that Van and the others would be safe
- Telling Van to go to Hitomi

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things in there, but you get the idea. Yes, I like Merle. She grows and changes through the series, she provides humor, and she's cute.

*sniffs* I really like Merle. She was the comic relief as far as I'm concerned. I have a picture of her all puffed up and angry for my wallpaper right now. :D I really thought she was a well done character...I mean you know how it is when someone young develops a crush. They hang on for dear life. If she'd come to respect Hitomi any sooner I think it may have been out of character for the situation.
Also Merle grew on me because it was the first time I'd been introduced to a "furry" character so to speak (half animal half human I mean). She was just a kawaii catgirl that I think at times pushed Hitomi to act by being so annoying. Plus one of my favorite dialogs in the series is attributed to her:

Hitomi: Try to picture her. The pointy ears, the long tail, the bad temper, her loud mouth.
Merle: I'm gonna use her legs as a scratching post!
...
Hitomi: She's over there!
Merle: Hpmh...like I'm going to stand up for her.
Van: Meruru?
Merle: VAN-SAMAAAAA!!!!

When Merle showed up she was so funny, the LORD VAN!! (dub) got very annoying very fast, but she took the tension outta some situations. Ya, she helped Hitomi and Van get together and that was very mature, she was definitly like Van's little sister. At first i thought SHE was in love with Van but after a few eps it was clear that she was protective of Van and suspicious about Hitomi, but over all, she was ok. (her voice was like nails on a chalkboard, but it suited her)

There's just something about catgirls... I like all of them. Merle got on my nerves at first, but now I like her, annoying factor and all. I just wish the series had delved a bit more into the cat race of people. And I wonder, if there are all these animal races, why are there no nations devoted to at least one of them? But that's getting OT, so...

Does anyone by chance know how old Merle is supposed to be? I'm thinking of writing an Escaflowne fanfiction, and I think I've seen 13, but I'd just like to double check. (*another fanfiction??? I haven't even finished my Fushigi Yuugi, Utena, or BrVS ones...*)

I think she's possibly older in the movie though, at least she looks a bit older.

I think Merle added some comedy to the series, and overall she was very funny. She was very protective of Van, which actually shows how she cares for people. Later on, as some have noted, she matures and realizes that she doesn't need to be jealous of Hitomi to protect Van, and so accepts Hitomi. Merle is that character that is endearing--annoying at times, but you can't help but like her in the end.

Okay, I guess most of us will agree if I say she can be pretty darn annoying most especially if we were in Hitomi's shoes.

But as I said previously, she has some admirable characteristics and more or less livened things up esp. if the other ppl are not in a good mood.
