It seems like Naota's family has had the cat for a while...so I dont' understand why Haruko uses it as a communicator either. Maybe she implanted something in the cat's head like she did to Naota??

I don't think Canti was always in Naota's head. I think when Haruko hit Naota with the guitar, she mad his head into like a portal for Medical Mechanica's robots to be transported through hoping that Medical Mechanica would send Atomsk to stop her. maybe...?

I never thought that conquering Earth was Haruko's goal. Wasn't Medical Mechanic the real danger? I remember Amarao saying that Medical Mechanica "razed who planets" I assumed that's what they wanted Atomsk's power for.

I think she was pissed because he got the power she'd been pining for for so long. I don't think she gave a damn about the Earth, either.

What is with Mamimi having to give Naota a hickey or she'll overflow? is it just something weird she does?

watch for mamimi's panties on some eps... in some quick and breif scenes.. they fly off... and you'd never notice unless you look hard

I think that the cat was there... and somehow Haruko can just use it as a communicator. it's not really clear as to who she's talking to, I thought she was working alone...

Canti was just transfered through Naota's head... the hitting of the gutair was to empty out his head to make it portal worthy.

Maybe Medical Mechanica is using Atomsk's power in the form of strenghtening their robots so when Naota gains control of Canti he also gains access to Atomsk's power. (total guess...I don't really know)

Throughout the whole series, Mamimi trys to replace Naota's brother (what's his name?...I forgot) with Naota. I think she really wants to give Naota's brother (damn, what's his name?!) a hickey but she just uses Naota as a replacement.

Hmm... cool observation with the Amarao thing. I never thought about him using the eyebrows to stop the portal from working but it makes sense.

I got the impression that Mamimi is just trying to use Naota to fill the gap becasue when Naota does finally go after her, she refuses to kiss him and towards the end of the series, she screams for Tasuku (yay! I got the name!) to help her, not Naota. I don't think she actually like dislikes Naota, I just don't think she has feelings for him.
I agree with you about Naota and Haruko. I think he's in love with her but is in denial too.

Naota already had the potential for a vortex in his head, and Haruko just activated it with her guitar, which probably ain't your average instrument (4 strings though, why a bass?) Alarms go off at the factory every time something breaks out of Naota's head though, which leads me to imagine that that's where the robots come from (escape alarms?)

What is Amarao's objective anyhow? It seems to me that he's mostly worried about not pissing Medical Mechanica, which suggests that in this world, the government is much weaker than corporations. In any case, I need to go watch ep.4 again, since that one has the most info on this topic. I don't think Naota's planet is Earth though...

Perhaps she was just smacking him around, hoping that Atomsk would eventually pop out? She couldn't really get into the factory, seeing that it had no entrances, so that'd be a messy and difficult way...but it worked! (on the first try too I believe)

She didn't REALLY like Naota, but she was damn good at seducing him for her own ends. But seeing him get the power she desired was enough to rupture any feelings she had for him.

They only said that she was in love with Atomsk, and didn't imply that it went both ways. Haruko seems a bit manipulative though, so perhaps she wishes to have Atomsk as her puppet?

Not particularily relevent...perhaps the portal and his brains exist simultaneously in the same space, or perhaps the portal distorts space around it, so that it merely obscures his brains. I doubt that it got shunted off to Medical Mechanica though...

Haruko didn't give a damn about the planet in any sort of way...but I think Medical Mechanica somehow managed to integrate Atomsk's power into Canti...not sure how closely they're related...

After Canti gets his head busted by Haruko, he spends some of the other episodes hunting through the city, looking for red shards. Seeing as the end result is boxy, I can't think of anything else it'd be aside from the backl of his head...

In episode 5, Amarao tells Haruko about how he's all grown up and old enough to take out a credit card, and Haruko constantly taunts him about his attempts to make himself look more mature... Additionally, Amarao is OBVIOUSLY in love with Haruko and massively jealous of Naota... He also has a portal in his head just like Naota, so the evidence all points to the possibility that Amarao was seduced and used at a young age, just like Naota is... Those eyebrows definitely nullify the portal though; just watch his hysteria when Haruko bashes him with her guitar, and he also empathizes with Naota, and slaps a pair on him too.

I think that Amarao is jealous of the capacities of Naota ... I'm ep.5 when e lose his eyebow Haruka take out a little thing out of his head .. then he cried :What so great about this kid? am I such a loser ? He was in love with Haruko but she left him like a old hag after seducing him when he was young just like Naota
And yes his eyebow seem to protect him ....

Do you mean the red symbol that appears on Canti's screen and Naota's forehead? If you do, I thought that that was the symbol for Atomsk and appeared whenever Canti or Naota gained access to Atomsk's power.

He also slapped a set of eyebrows on Naota and was pissed that they had fallen off right before the series' ending. I think they were control devices/prevention devices to keep Medical Mechanica out of their skulls.

Its actually the the factory that is sending the Machines to Naota head, you always hear the factory first and then Naota gets something through his portal.

I noticed that in the episode with the hand shaped robot and in the first episode. I don't know if it applies to the other episodes though...I'd have to watch them again but it seems like a plausable theory that his emotions could trigger the portal. I think that the sirens from the factory signalled that a robot was escaping...but that's just my opinion.

All she was trying to do was bring out Atmosk the whole series....
in the last episode I think she only wanted to activate medical mechanica because there was no other way that Atmosk would be able to show his true power if she didnt....

I talked to Yumiko about it on ICQ and she said furi kuri is just jibberisch and has no real meaning, since she is Japanese I would say that she would know what she was talking about. Your reference to the manga scene, they where talking about furi furi and kuri kuri, which has some meaning, but I didn't bother to remember them.

It seems medical mechanica is using the robots to activate the hand beside the factory and the hand is supposed to move the factory razing the planet, a presentation of how its going to be done is on episode 6. It would happens sooner if Haruko has stopped trying to beat the crap out of all the robots coming out of Naota heads which led me back to my first question, why is she trying to stop the robots(controle module) and then at the very end puts the controle module into the hand herself, note that this happens before atomsk came out, so it wasn't because she has already have atomsk.

That's a little puzzling.. I dunno... she was breaking all the medical mechania in order to have them send more. But maybe she saw the whole thing and planet useless... that they aren't gunna send Atmosk, so let them take this world so they'll move to the next one.

I not sure if it's true but I've seen at last Concordia University's animothon a really good fansub (better than the one I got)
At the begning they gave explanation on strange japanese expression in FLCL ... Furi Kuri is supposed to be a kind of japanese slang expression that mean breast/butt ... but they do lot of puns with it .... that what it was told before ep.1 ....

wow, I just watched the whole series and I'm still trying to get over the absurdness of it all :D

Ive read the thread and its cleared up a fair a bit but I still have some questions

- Can anyone have a portal in their head or was there something special with Naohe?

- both Naohe and Amarao dislike spicy/sour foods and they both have portals in their heads, is there a relation, or am I over examining?

- why did a horn grow out of Naohe head and make him kiss Haruko? was it just coincidence, or was it on purpose?

Also,in the first episode.Right when Haruko takes a peek at the letter his brother sent you see a glimpse of a photograph.It looks like Naota's brother with some blonde girl(meaning that he forgot about Mamimi and got another girlfriend in America).The text also read "Got a blonde girl!".That must have been why Haruko went out smoking,she was depressed.

Also,FLCL is set on Earth because Naota's brother is in *America*.
Mabase must be a new city that was built in Japan in the near future or something.

I always figured that the bracelete that haruko wore was used to find anamosk...... whenever Canti or Naota uses the borowed powers of anamosk.... its starts going crazy and moving up and down in the direction that user is in..... some sort of tracking device?..... after all haruko was only using naota the whole series to find anamosk.....

I agree about the bracelet being a detector to sense Atomsk's power, that's what I always figured it was.

As far as changing her name, maybe she did it to avoid being found out by Amarao or Medical Mechanica. Amarao could speak to Naota and tell him all about Haruko's plans. Maybe she changed her name to avoid being found by Amarao who would probably make it more difficult for her to use Naota as a portal because of the giant eyebrows

Here are my theories on the stuff that was mentioned in this thread (well, the stuff I remember anyway) :

The Eyebrows

I don't think the eyebrows have a real practical purpose but are more symbolic. Amaro<sp> puts them on in an attempt to look more grown up and serious. He is trying to grow up, to get over Haruko, but he's only lying to himself. In truth he is still in love with Haruko and is trying to impress her with his "mature appearance" . you can see that when he loses the eyebrows in episode 5 (I think) he drops this pretence and becomes a snivelling little b*tch. That's kinda what he's trying to do with Naota I think...

Naota's infutiation with Haruko makes him vulnreable to her manipulations, she is using him to get to Atomsk and what Naota is helping her do may result in the destruction of the planet. Amaro glues the eyebrows on Naota to make him open his eyes, see Haruko for what she really is, grow up and do the right thing ( which would be I think the destruction of Atomsk ).

The Hand robots and Canti

Okiedokie, my memory is a bit hazy here but I seem to remember it being mentioned that Atomsk was captured by Medical Mechanica (to what purpose? I'm nost sure, I think they were afraid of him) nowww... Amaro says Haruko helped him escape because she loves him or something like that. Well, the part where he escapes his in episode 1 right? Atomsk, in the body of Canti, who is a medical mechanica robot, comes out of Naota's head along with another robot. I think this is the escape part but I think Haruko only helped him esape because she's interested in his power, Amaro probably added that lover bit because he's bitter about his relationship with Haruko and wants to make himself feel better by seeing Haruko as a person who can also be controlled by love.

Now, Amaro and his organization (or NERV, as I like to call them :D) are trying to destroy Canti and Atomsk along with him. Amaro says this is to prevent MM from getting involved but they fail and MM does get involved, they send their robots in to destroy Canti and after the first ones failed they resort to trying to destroy the entire planet and Atomsk along with it by getting the robots to use the steam iron. Haruko doesn't want Atomsk destroyed so she tries to stop the robots. That's what I think anyway :) I think that in the last episode she is trying to release Atomsk so can she take over him and she definitely doesn't care about what's going to happen to the planet as a result... I'm really not sure about that part though.... FLCL is too confusing :(

I wanted to say some more but I forgot what, I wrote too much anyway ^^; oh yeah, that guy who's talking to Ninamori in the bath is Naota's father, I can't see how it can be anyone else.

I have read the first manga of FLCL and I wonder...What the heck is going on?!?!?

Is this one of those crappy cartoons in wich the writer masks his lack of talent with what he calls shocking art?Or by making the story shocking by itself?Halfway I thought it could be a psychological thriller like EVA of Lain but no,it barely deserves to be named a story,rather a random scribble of whatever came in the writer's mind.

Back to the series, in one of the episodes, Amaro explains something about how haruko is able to pull out objects through Naota's head because in some people she can open a "hyperspace passage" through the bridge between the left and the right brains, dealing with logic and illogic respectably. Does this mean that we the viewer are supposed to use similar methods, as to say, interpret and accept both the logical and the illogical parts of the show simultaniously and process them together to get the true meaning of the episodes?
