View Full Version : Possible cast and Crew for Live Action "2040"

Now, before you mow me down with a minigun, hear me out man!! As I stated with the previous "live action anime cast" posts, Anime is steadily gaining support in the west, and with the "Final Fantasy" film's imminent arrival, fascination for Japanese stuff would just soar.

And considering that half the original cast is either caucasian or caucasian looking, the conversion should not be too hard.

Here we go:

The Cast

Yamazaki Linna: Anna Paquin (Spunky, atheletic, charming babe).

Asaragi Priss: Christina Ricci (Sexy, cold hearted cynical b!tch).

Nene Romanova: Alyson Hannigan (KAWAII KAWAII KAWAII!!).

Sylia Stingray: Natalie Portman (Regal, intelligent dignified lady).

Mackie Stingray: Chris Klein (Dopey, nice boy).

Nigel: Nicholas Cage (Shriveled drunken cynic).

Leon McNichol: Keanu Reeves (Fat Frustrated Veteran).

Daily Wong: Ed Norton (Laid Back Wiseass).

Brian J. Mason: John Travolta (Sleazy, sex starved pervert).

CREW

Director: Ridley Scott (Blade Runner DID inspire the franchise after all).

Music: Hans Zimmer (His thunderously powerful scores for "Broken Arrow", "Gladiator" and "Hannibal" PROVES he is THE man for the job.)

Fight Choreographer: Corey Yuen (He KNOWS how to do comic book fight scenes. "X-Men" and "High Risk", anyone?)

Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer (He CAN do loud, colorful and flamboyant chick flicks, as shown in "Coyote Ugly." And the universe of 2040 is nothing if not loud and colorful.)

I am now at your flamethrower's mercy.

Man, were it not for John Woo, his career would STILL be in the toilet after the travesty that was the "Look Who's Talking" series!!

I suppose, but wasn't he in Battlefield: Earth??

Indeed he was. And that film was the shovel thrown on his head to him to dig lower when he hit the bottom of the pit.

Amusing as it is to discuss the collapse of Travolta's career, let us get back on topic before this thread is closed, shall we?

MUCH too old.

Sylia is a young woman of 24 or so, fresh out of college.

Plus, her appeal is an elegant and dignified beauty, not voloptuous sexuality (That's Priss).

Hence only somebody with Natalie Portman's mature yet youthful beauty can cut it for the job.

If there's anyone else like kawaii lil Nat, I'm all ears!!

Here are the requested translations of these essential and CONSTANTLY used anime terms.

Kawaii= Cute, Adorable, Sweet. (Usually used to descirbe beautiful girls and women, as well as gorgeous children children and innocent young men.)

Chibi (1)adjective= Little

(2) Noun= Toddler or similarly sized children.

(3) Synonym to= Super Deformed.

Hope these could help. :)

Your friendly local university should offer part time courses for diplomas in the language.

Anyhoo, back on topic, here's other possible fight choreographers for the possible live action 2040:

Yuen Woo Ping (THE definitive martial arts fight choreographer. His work can be seen in such martial arts classics as "Once Upon a Time in China 1-2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and of course, The Matrix)

Sammo Hung (Watch the fight betwee Benny "The Jet" Urquidez and Jackie Chan in "Wheels on Meals' and you'll know exactly what I mean.)

Ray Park (HE choreographed the greatest Lightsabre Duel EVER in the Star Wars Saga, so he should know how high tech martial artists like the Knight sabres should move)

Nicholas Powell (THE swordsmaster of brutality in Hollywood. Worked in such mega blockbusters like "Braveheart", "The Mummy" and "Gladiator.")

And another music guy:

Mark Snow (His compositions in the X-files shows his flair for the eerie darkness that is also present in 2040)

Danny Elfman (Well, he is just BIZZARE. His gothic signature has shown in such classics as "Batman", "Sleepy Hollow" "Men in Black" and "Mars Attacks." And lets admit it, Tokyo of 2040 IS a pretty Gothic place, isn't it.)

That's it for my incessant rambling.... for now. :)

I agree with you on Sammo Hung

I dunno bout your choice of Music dude, hes good but not quite in the right area of Music, his being orchestra, im thinking more of a Techno type theme would be more suitible.

Well, Mark Snow composed the X-Files theme on an electric synthesiser, and can be EXTREMELY creepy with his chosen instrument of specialisation.

Hans Zimmer's themes for both "The Rock" and "Broken Arrow" are thunderously powerful displays of industrial electronically synthesised melodies, more than suitable for the technological intensity of the action in 2040.

Ronin Aquila
14-06-01, 09:19 AM
Actually, come to think of it, Brad Fiedel, the man responsible for the themes of "The Terminator" and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" would be the PERFECT choice of the themes composer.

His signature is that his music is that of the synthesiser and the recorded sounds of industrial machines, resulting in haunting cacophanies of postmodern technological nightmares.

Don't know how this thread was allowed to fall by the wayside, but having some experience with the back workings of the film industry, here's my 2 cents.

CAST

Linna: Yeah, Anna Paquin would be my big name choice to play Linna, though you might have some difficulty convincing her to play another cartoon character

Priss: I would get a little known actress to play her, one who can sing and has the right eyes for it.

Nene: Not too sure about this one, probably go with another little known actress, one who can pull good approximations of those amusing facial expressions

Sylia/Galatea: Not sure about her also, but definitely somebody that can do elegant. BTW, Natalie Portman is totally the wrong choice to play her, she's not even twenty (year of birth:1982).

Nigel: After much thought, Nicholas Cage could do this part, but he'd be so expensive you'd have to go for a lesser known actor.

Leon: A few choices for him. Top of my list would be the guy from who play Angel in Buffy, (what an ironic name for a vampire), so long as he could do conceited and angry. Possibly Robert Patrick (I think that's his name, Terminator 2, X files), though he's a little old now (Leon's the same age as Sylia), or the guy who played Quintin/Stone on the show Gross Pointe (God, I can't remember anybody's name!)

Wong: Definitely Ed Norton, the parts almost made for him (even if it is just a supporting role)

Mason: There's a list here as long as my arm. I think Jon Malkovich would be my top choice (he'll need a wig from makeup but)

(Note: With all the special effects to put into it, you could only afford one or two big names)

CREW

Director: Fast paced action directors are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. Plenty of choice here, but if you want somebody good, either Riddley Scott or James Cameron.

Music: Everybody listed so far is a good choice, though the musical score for a BGC movie would have to have the same cyberpunk rock feel that the anime has.

Fight Choreographer: Same as the conductors, any of those listed previously would be a good choice.

Producer: Probably get Michael Deeley and Riddley Scott to team up again and produce BGC. (Do not let Jerry Bruckheimer get his hands on this at all, otherwise he'd just turn it into a mechanized version of Charlie's Angels, and nobody wants that!)

Writer: Me:D Don't let any of those Hollywood hacks touch it, they'll just ruin it. I'll do BGC credit.

Also, I should note that it will be a cold day in hell before anybody in Hollywood even takes notice of BGC, it doesn't have the mass market weight behind it that Final Fantasy did.

I dont want to be a party pooper but this really is a silly thread.
My thread about a bgc2040 movie makes perfect sense since im talking about an anime movie like Akira.
The idea of a live action movie is quite absurd. I really wish members would think harder before starting a thread like this.
What on earth does a live action move have to do with bgc2040 anyway.
Sure there was X Men but that was Hollywood.
Anyway thats my two cents.
If people want to stick up for the member that made this thread then be my guest.

Lurker

This is just mainly what we'd like to see if Hollywood ever got their claws on BGC.
And they'd do it too if it had the exposure Final Fantasy did.

Considering who started this thread, I would say subscribers are interested in seeing cosplay in action.

And who you pick for the girls, you'll get a chance to see them in their birthday suits as they done the new hardsuits. :naughty:

I'll probably have something more thread-following next time. At the moment, I'm still a little drained from having to do the same for Sailor Moon.

Oh, actually there is a literal anime to film adaptation in Hong Kong.

It is Wicked City (or City of Monsters as it is called in HK) and this adaptation is a dreadfully dull (not to mention hideously contrived ) drug thriller involving substances made from Monster Secretions.

A better "live action anime" would be Tsui Hark's The Swordsman 2; Asia The Invincible starring Jet Li and the still stunning Bridget Ling. If you ever wondered what a superleap or wall shattering force looks like in "real" life, watch this film!!

Well, I coallated if from the Anime Magazine Manga Max in 1999 before it went out of syndication. Also, the Matrix DVD was most insightful in providing the interviews through which the Wachowski brothers expressed their love for anime.

And yes, Final Fantasy is the most depressing piece of money wasting garbage... no, to call it garbage would be an insult to the dignity of garbage around the world.

WTF were they thinking when they hired voice actors who could not even act ? And who would say "I don't know, I think ouch.' quietly when they have just been impaled by a foot wide pole.

And WTF is the hype about Dr Aki Ross's realism ? The old doctor looked much more real than she ever would !! Man, that is the biggest amount of money wasted on hair (30 Million or so0 in film history!

Overall, a sad waste of money... ;bawling:

i thought the story line was total garbage i mean get any of the games they kick arse but the movie was a let down though the voice acting annoyed me the most i guess i fell the same way about tomb raider accept angelina was good for the part but the story line is totaly wrong
personaly the best film ever is snatch and lock stock and two smoking barrells i love those movies guy richie is a genius not to mention VINNY JONES:)

Getting back on topic, we should also think about how the BGC story can be converted to film. Do we want to compress the entire 26 episodes into one 2 hour film, or stretch it over a series of movies, like a trilogy. I'd personnaly go for the trilogy.

Ronin Aquila
10-10-01, 08:21 PM
Most splendid idea!! It would therefore prevent the problem of " contrived narrative compaction" that films like A Man Called Hero (based on a 20 year long Manga) suffered.

Or better yet, how about a 13 episode, 1 hour per episode TV series!! This will regrettably require lesser known actors (unless the aforementioned ones truly love their art). However, each episode can be the equivalent of 2 in the original, so that the narrative flies much faster for the audience than having to wait 7 days hanging in the air for 30 minutes of continuity.

Just a dream, but hey, you never know... :p:

Unfortunately TV networks won't go for the 1 hr 13 part format without the option to buy more series if the show rates well.

Anyhoo, just thought of another (or rather, another pair) of directors who would be perfect for directing the adaptation:

The Wachowski Brothers (of The Matrix fame). They are some of the few Hollywood Directors out there who are true Otakus and have a genuine love for anime. :)

rei-gouki
10-10-01, 10:55 PM
Back to that idea about a trilogy.

How about we break the story like so:

1) Formation of the Knight Sabers;
Intro to the big bad Genom with BGC2040 ep 6 as the ending to this one.

2) Discovery of the Dragon Line;
Death of Brian J. Mason as the apparent victory. Ends with the Knights Sabers unaware that Galatea survived whatever plan Sylia had.

3) Galatea;
Need I say more?

As for the '13 ep' idea, I'm thinking you would have to return to the original story line where the Knight Sabers are a mercenary group. That story line could be made to last longer than 13 eps. Who knows, they could even toss in an encounter with Noir, or something.

DNA_Master
10-10-01, 11:08 PM
how about we get some better music? Like the people who did the reinterpretation for 2033 (the replicants). They know what the songs are meant to be like.

Dont forget that its 1980s cyberpunk, NOT 1990s 'dark future' stuff.

rei-gouki
10-10-01, 11:34 PM
That's a great idea.

I don't really want say this, but the people that dubbed the Magic Knight Rayearth songs did pretty well too. In addition, Slayers and Tenchi Muyou as well.

Ronin Aquila
10-10-01, 11:40 PM
Don't forget Kanno Yoko (of Escaflowne and Card Captor Sakura fame), the mistress of majestic anime orchestra!!

On the matte of crossing over with Noir; unless our Darling Lil Kirika's :kawaii: aging process retards itself upon becoming a true Noir, she would be 54 by the time she meets the Knight Sabres. :bawling:

Ahh well, it was worth a shot. Anyway, who says it has to be those two. Noir has existed for centuries, hasn't it? It could be their daughters. They could have a different starting date. Say 2039. The proliferation of Genom could have sparked the reactivation of Noir.

PS: I DIDN'T need a picture of a 54 yo Kirika in my head, thank you very much!

I was more sad at the fact that she won't be so kawaii anymore. Sure, she would still be atheletic, dignified and perhaps even elegant (like Sigourney Weaver, now 53, in Alien Ressurection ), but still she won't be as cute anymore :bawling:

Ronin Aquila
11-10-01, 02:12 AM
Oh, and by the way. If you watched Noir in detail, you would know that the life and responsibilities of Kirika, and indeed the life of any true Noir, will completely preclude them from the possibility of ever finding love (and/or intimacy) let alone getting married and/or having children. They are after all Maidens of death, and perhaps must remain so to keep their awesome powers.

Anyhoo, lets get back to the year 2040...
