The movie is completely different from the series in almost every way. It is also a LOT darker, heck Hitomi is even suicidal near the beginning.
Despite it's huge differences from the series, it's still a very very good movie, get yourself a copy on ebay :)

The movie was good...a little different after seeing the series, but I liked the series more. Something about 26 episodes getting to know the characters and situatuin appeals to me a little more...

I think I hated Allen's and Millernia's (er sp..it's late) design the most...I mean I knew it was them...but..yeah. It was also really dark...I could barely see what was going on. Also I think the ending was a tad rushed...I'm sure I could gripe more, but it is basically the entire series (even if it's alternate universe type flare) crammed into an hour and a half.

I agree that the ending felt rushed. I wanted a cataclysmic fight between Van and Folkien. I didn't expect to see (forgot his name) the feline-man step in, and the quick resolution there was cool...but not as cool and well-executed as the fight between Van and Dilandu.

Truthfully the movie was just eye candy. Don't get me wrong, it was nicely done and interesting eye candy, but it was nothing compared to the series. And I’m not sayin' that I didn't like that move, not at all. I loved it!! To me it just doesn't hold up to the series, story wise; though in the movie I was fascinated by the whole goddess of wings thing, which to me appeared to be the whole plot.
But for all you who interested in seein' the movie I highly recommend it! Just don't hold it up to the series and expect to enjoy it. Think of it as a free standing movie and you will ever so fall in love with it! I did!

I thought the movie was great.
Just don't watch it expecting to see the series told in 90 minutes, cause then you'll be dissappointed. Watch it as though you've never seen the series.
Personally I didn't like the movie very much... at least if I compare it to the series.
As a stand alone the movie kicks ass... it's falls a lot if you've seen the series (IMO).
The characters looked silly... in some cases I liked their personality better though.

I thought the character design was sweet!! Ok, except for Folken who just looked deranged with the two colored eyes and Merlana, who doesn't have red hair!!!! But I loved the way Allen looked, his hair was .... god I want his hair! :inlove: As for the other characters they looked fine, though I did miss Baan's red shirt.
I've seen very little of the series, but I have seen the movie.
Here are the elements that made a 'what could've been a great movie not so good:"
* First off it seems just that little bit violent and graphic.
* They seemed to have gone by the mind-set that by putting in more violence, essentials such as the plot and character development could be neglected.
* Some of the movie character designs really sucked (Allen, Hitomi and Merle stand out to be the worst)

Coign,
Why don't you like the way they looked?? what was so bad about it?? Just wonderin'

-Yep, agree with the violence thing. The series has practically no blood & gore when compared with most anime series, but the movie really goes overboard in that aspect.
-No, it didn't seem to detract from anything though. Remove that bloody scene at the beginning, Folken's death and a few of those other gory scenes and you've still got an 85 or so minute movie of good stuff :P
-The only character design I didn't like was Folken's. Granted, Hitomi, Merle and Yukari weren't as cute as they were in the series, but thats the price you pay with the much more realistic animation and darker story.

I just thought it looked more 'ugly.' Most of the time, a movie will exhibit better quality animation. In this case I was a little let down, that's all...

What good stuff? The plot was rushed forward far too much. Nothing was left to speculation. It was too black and white for such a well thought-out anime. (Insert another 50 gripes here)

Why the hell do we want more realism in Anime? Considering that Anime is Escapist by nature, realism is blasphemy!

Anime is no more escapist than any other branch of art - books, movies, pictures, or music.
And realism is advancing anime progress, because:
1. It demands better quality animation;
2. Better thought-out plot, dialogue, character development;
3. Borrows instruments from movies, plays, books;
4. Expands the audience, thus making more money, thus allowing better quality.
Repeat ad infinitum.
