as much as i respect your opinions coign, come on! higher learning is a damn good fic done by a very talented writer. i agree with you that nge is a great series and should be left alone, but Fiss is mearly altering the story to make things more interesting. it's not like eva-r that adds several new characters and evas. this only added one new character and kept all the current ones within their means. i just wonder what he's gonna do when the 17th angel shows up since the teacher and he have the same name. anyways, i yet again tip my hat to Fiss. from one writer to another, excellent job. well, I just read the first 10 parts of Higher Learning, and I must agree, this is the best written piece of work I've read in a while. very nice. i think there's something up with the new teacher, Kaoru Miyazaki. i would read more tonight, but if I did, i wouldn't get any sleep. it's just as good as watching the show.
as for reading it if you've only seen eps 1-8, that's really up to you. if it was me, I'd wait until I've watched the rest of the episodes. shouldn't be too hard now, as all the dvds are released in the US.

yes there are definite spoilers. i'm not sure where it starts though, i'll have to read it again. damn you Fiss and your talent! on a bit of a side note i seriously suggest getting the rest of the dvds. the other 6 have been released, all that's left are the movies. i got my dvds from buy.com for only $19!!!!!! they arrived within a few days, and that was the most basic of shipping!! that place rocks!! anime dvds are cheap as hell there, i seriously suggest checking it out. back on topic, i'll read the first chapter tomorrow afternoon and get back to you then on when it starts and how far you can go.

Teldak sorry to inform you but Higher Learning starts just after the first episode on the 3rd dvd (episode 9). even if i didn't i'd still suggest watching all of nge first. things happen out of place a few times, and some major things don't happen. and if you're like me you'll read it all at once without seeing that far in the series and ruin some of it for yourself. just pick up the other 6 dvds, watch 'em, then read higher learning. it will eventually go into EoE but that won't be until chapter 45 or 46, i assume. by then you'll know how to control yourself.

Thank you. I have had some plot stuff screwed for me before, nothing _-I AM GONNA DIE-_ serious, but stuff about future angels (that was my own doing, but only one really gets me wierded out in the head, take a wild guess), evas doing odd things (LOOK AT ME EATING MY FRITOS!), and other junk. Buy.com. good idea. I need some cash now. Mowing lawns. Good thing to do friday. My day off. ::yay:: Eva dvds. 6 more. $120. 2 lawns a day, 3 days a week, $5 a piece. 4 weeks. Not to mention I need to start saving on a down payment on a car. I want a car when I get my driver's license.

in those cases, a good thing to do is to tape your eyelids to your forehead, or you can use toothpicks :lol:

Teldak i did the same thing quite accidentally. when i was just trying to get some basic info on nge one of the first sites i went to had a very important rei pic from EoE on the main page. other things have been ruined as well but they were mostly my doing. a few came on the AB but that's because i was an idiot and thought the spoilers weren't that big. little did i know that everything in nge is big. i'm still kicking myself for watching an EoE AMV. anyways, i seriously suggest getting the dvds now, they're worth it!
i started reading HIgher Learning the other day and it's grea. Only problem is my teacher's edition 3 stops halfway through lesson 25 :( does anyone have the full edition?

Just wanted to say hello to all the readers out there! Also, have to test out my keen little avatar, so... ^_^
Anyway, HL 42 should continue the weekly cycle. Higher Learning is almost finished (don't worry...that's still a LOT of plot, and lots of goodies planned) so I'm trying to end it on the same note I started. Weekly updated. However, and I'm sure this will be accepted as more important, I'm not going to post for the sake of posting. If it takes me 3 weeks per lesson, so be it. ^_^ But I will try to be faster than that.

ah, if only I could right with such ease.....
Everyone will be happy to know I went and read the afformentioned fanfic, (what little of it there was...), and decided that the quality of writing was above par and the plot rework was executed rather well. Character personas were adhered to as far as was possible before the new plot helped change them and the end result was not unpleasing...
BUT
I still stand by what I said earlier. Flame me if you will, but it's MY opinion, and I'm sure as hell not going to let anyone change that.

As a fanfic author myself, of course I find your attitude towards fanfiction disappointing, but hey -- everyone's got an opinion... and at least you don't pretend to like them just to get along with those of us that do.

Considering my other works, I agree. HL has been pretty light. The disadvantage with putting it out in Lessons instead of larger chunks is that the plot doesn't flow as nicely as a novel. Therefore, I really don't think of it as such.
Flow and the style of writing is 90% of a fic. I'm fortunate enough that the rest (such as bad jokes and action) actually just kinda fall into place.
I don't doubt that the good Mr Coign will agree that you can probably see when I was rushed, and when I was able to write more like a novel. Not easily fixed, but most people seem to enjoy it nontheless. ^_^ So long as I'm not causing people's eyes to bleed, I suppose that's okay.
As for anti-fanfiction remarks, I ask you all to take them seriously. When I first started writing, it was DIRECTLY related to the fact that there was nothing but crap out there for fanfiction. Besides the one or two stories that actually inspired me to pick up the keyboard and type, there was a sea (and still is) of a lot of baaaaaaaaaad writing out there. While a lot of it can be blamed (blamed?) on inexperienced writers, or just boredom and having fun (perfectly good reasons, I might add) you might want to consider that Coign is comparing it to the other books he's read.
It would be like comparing Professional Basketball to Olympic Basketball. There are AMAZING athletes in both, however, the NBA pays millions of dollars for their top stars, and you will see more of them than you will the one or two equals in the Olympics from some unknown team from some non-US country.
However, condemming ALL fanfiction? I disagree with you, Mr Coign. The theory and principal behind it is not at fault. Fans are what make anime so great. And, I can speak for personal experience that, when one reads a fanfic, it is only excitement, and desire to watch the said series/movie that happens...not "Oh, now that I read the fanfic, I assume that's even better than the show!"
A fanfic is the ultimate 'Movie Trailer'. It has all the bits that other fans think are worthy to share, plus it does not show the entire 'movie', so it will actually act like positive (usually) advertisment for the show.
Fanfiction does not take away from an anime series...rather, it adds the fan element. Just because I write and read fanfics doesn't mean I'm not going to plunk down cash for Eva CD's and wall scrolls. ^_^ In fact, I would probably never have become an Eva fan without Fanfics. The reason Eva is so popular today is because of it's fans. Not because of the amount of $$$ it rakes in.
Even if you get a script for every episode, and screen shots a plenty, it's not the same. I would rather WATCH End of Eva than read about it.
Not only that, but fanfics keep crazy writers off the street. God help us all if I had more free time on my hands. ^_^

fiss, all the great writers do that. shooting from the hip proves just how well you can write from the heart. i do the same thing, i never plan anything out. i let things flow and the end result usually kicks ass! that's what makes writing fun, you get caught up in the emotion of the scene you're creating and it becomes much easier to write. well that's what happens to me anyways :goof: . hopefully my site will be back up soon and i'll give fiss some friendly competition, until then i look forward to debating with you and hopefully becoming friends. for right now i'm gonna go read lesson 42 since i've been away for a few days.

true, i find that writing by what comes to mind and then going back and reworking it is the most successful way to write. Writing has never been a problem for me, or ussjburori for that matter, in fact we have been working on several fanfics for some time, series include DBZ, Trigun, and EVA, plus some original stories altogether. As he said, when we get our site back up and running in a few months, we will have this all up there...

Heh. Well, I've always been one to write by the skin of my teeth, or whatever. Higher Learning actually DOES have a few major plot outlines (and yes, I know who Kaoru is) to work for, but I never plan anything out. I find the best way to write is having one or two major scenes to work toward, then filling in the rest. It's not just with 'end' scenes, either. If you can get a good image of one or two middle scenes, it works very nice. That way you're not just writing 'filler' for half the story.
And I'm always looking forward to seeing fellow writer-peeps and their work, so I won't mind any friendly competition at all. ^_^

You are lucky people. I like to co-write fics with Jenelle (mainly cuz we can clash so much in a fic it actually starts making sense to those who know our inside jokes/refs). 40 pages worth fo filler basically was the result of something i don't even remmeber. but, like i said, it ended up with the world ended, but me and her and two other people. she was in bed with one of the other and i was with the other. very funny. I can manage to think up good plot lines, while, no, not plot lines, but plot scenes. I.E. Lieutinant Une sitting on the seattle monolith and everyone else freezing like trowa. really wierd, but i can't flesh it out into something comprehendable, well, actually, i can, but rarely am i satisfied. and don't read my fic on fanfiction.net. it was the result of seeing the first tape of eva and losing a lot of sleep.

Since I started reading about Evangelion and eventually watching the episodes I was very interested in the Shinji & Asuka relationship (too bad things didn't always go so well in the episodes), so you can imagine why I like your fanfics! :D

I read the first BIG part of HL yesterday and I thought it was great.
It resembled a lot of the original series compared to the other fanfics around.
I see that Strike Fiss has concentrated a bit on the relationship between Asuka and Shinji - Which I found very appealing to me.
( Always was/will be a sucker for romantic moments ;-) )
Keep up the excellent work Fiss, it feels like NGE reborn!
I will try to read the rest of the HL today, it will be a treat!!!!

Yeah, so was I Hiig...I mean I have mentioned it to others...and then the blank stare comes. I like VOaT alot...its definitely one of my favs...but I want them to get parts 5 and 6 out dammit. Yeah, I just really started reading Children a couple weeks ago...and now I have read through part 20...so just a waiting game now...
thats what I hate most about these fanfics...I have read like 4 major fics(1,000 pages or more), and they all are not done...I need more dammit!
Actually I was thinking...I anyone doesn't mind a lemony flavored fic, that is probably the funniest thing I have ever read...okay its horrible, filled with sex, and not really EVA at all, but its still goddamn funny...go read "Garden of Eva"
