View Full Version : Wrong and Broken!

I think Burn up W is wrong and broken. This is why.
I just watched the 3rd tape the other day and I thought it was really immature. (thats not a good word, bear with me)
It starts with the bit where Rio (?) is trying to pawn her underwear, which I have nothing against. I'm not a prude and I would consider that amusing IF it wasnt for another scene later on where her best friend gets shot. While watching the bit where Rio is crying in her apartment I got this intense feeling of disgust, "Should I laugh at the panties and cry at the gun?" The panties really seems to trivialise her best friend getting killed and the same for the reverse. It give false weight to the previous humorous bits.
What does everyone else think?
well it has been a while since i have seen Burn up W, bu ti do remember those scenes, i guess it does lend itself to what you suggest but also it shows something about the fagility of human relationships and all the rest.
Burn up W is not one of my fav series, in fact im sure ive only ever seen it once, so i really dont have much to say

I think you're taking it WAY too seriously. It's Burn Up W for goodness sakes. It has to be one of the silliest, most immature series ever. Yes, it's wrong and broken, but that's kind of the point.

That's a very good point. Burn Up W is slapstick, but it does have its sober parts as you know. Just enjoy it and don't take it too seriously. Some anime shouldn't be taken seriously.

But thats the very point! Its SHOULD be a funny nonsensical show, but the bits that try to get me to feel sad, or vengeful come off as being in poor taste. I laugh at the underwear, but im sorry, but people getting shot is less amusing. And then having scenes that should make me cry along with the characters just fuçks me up.
Do you understand? I can watch Pokemon and DBZ because i can appreciate them as childish shows that are not meant to be taken seriously in the least. Both are set in fantasy worlds where reality is that little bit harder to impress upon the action than Burn Up W, set in modern day Tokyo... therefore when Character X gets killed in DBZ (for the xxxth time no doubt  ) the i can retain my non serious demeanor because i know they're going to turn up again in a few episodes anyway -- ITS NOT SAD!
Apart from these reasons I watched it quite close to when i watched Eva for the first time, (notice the date oin my first post in this thread ;) ) so i was sorta using that as a measure ... if you're at all familar with Eva then perhaps you will know exactly what I mean...?

ITS FINALLY HERE. Imma watch it this weekend and post my thoughts on what you're talking about afterwards. I find it strange that buy.com carries all the vhs but no dvd. I had to get it for amazon for at least 5$ more that i think buy.com would've had it for.

Watched the 1st ep so far. The first episode was Goofy, fanservicy, and funny. Nothing serious yet, those lackey terrorists were hilarious with their demands. More as i watch more eps.

The first ep was ok. But ep two has some -- "less than reverent" -- references to Evangelion... you'll see when you watch it.

ah finally i finished watching and here are my thoughts. I feel the division between the "funny" and "serious" is large enough so that the show continues to move on even after teh change of mood. Although this is a very abrupt and powerful way to switch the mood it's believable. I mean rio seemed to be just a goof off and this sad event turned her somber and serious, i mean why wouldnt it? When i saw the underwear part i thought it was funny, and as soon as i saw the mentioned part i felt rather sad at the whole thing. I guess if you expected the whole thing to be like ep 1 and 2 you would be rather jolted by ep 3 and 4.
I am looking forward to if and when ADV releases Burn Up Xcess so i can see the rest of this series. BTW the eva reference is rather enjoyable, if not too silly.

watching the 2nd episode I was a bit ... "How DARE you question Eva!" In general didnt like the fan service in NGE, so the more-so over the top stuff in Burn Up was unenjoyable... And the ending, where Rio has to take off her apnties for the bad guys ... I thought that was so contrived.
As I said, if I could take this as a non-serious anime then I'd probably be able to enjoy it, but alas this is not to be ...

i have to question misty's fashion sense, half a short, and short shorts... hm... what's a 10 year old girl doing walking around the forests and roads with 2 other guys doing wearing something like that? ;)

Whoa, I just read this thread [old i know], and i totally agree [not with misty, with Burn Up]. I think the animators really screwed/blurred this one up. They shoulda made 5 eps and expanded the panty bit + some other humour while cutting off Chisato's death to a next ep. I was really confused like u were.
Mods should move this thread into Burn Up.

I would like to point out that this thread is eleven months old. Why are there still posts?

seems a certain member bumped it up a lot... but it does belong in the burn up forum... ya know if you go really far back on this forum, theres lots of threads taht should be sorted...
I saw the entire  series of Burn up W last night. I found this very funny most of the time, sometimes laughing with the show, sometimes laughing at it. By the end we were all yelling out 'let's get naked' after every line spoken 'cause just how much gratuitous nudity can you have in one ep?
I just about lost it with the eva reference, that was hilarious, especially at the end with Maria.
Also I too am getting pissed off with ADV's recycling of voice actors as some members have pointed out before but that's just being picky.
