***Obvious Boy Says: SPOILERS!!!***

1) Yes, Lain is real...in the sense that she exists and interacts with others.

2) One of my biggest questions. I'll steer you to some threads to read later.

3) It is somewhat agreed-upon that Alien Lain is part of the whole Lain. Difficult to explain. Links to follow.

4) See above. She was possibly trying to say something that she could only feel comfortable saying in a certain form.

5) There is one Lain, but many sides to her. After a while, the Wired Lain learns how to break the barrier between the Wired and the Real World.

6) I don't think the Knights ever control Lain.

7) My take on accella is that it's a poor-man's way of feeling connected to the Wired without being accepted by the Knights. I could be wrong.

When I get home, I'll post some relevant links to read over. And we're all confused in this forum. :D

there are many theories on Lain's existance. depending on your definition of "real" as in alive? ..or substanciated?

if you mean "is Lain an application?" ... i believe she is not an application.. or maybe all humans are simply applications.

i believe that Mika went insane. perhaps in form that the Knights [due to the Knights of Eastern Calculus symbol being present in her 'transformation' or 'binary' scene] have attempted use of the Protocol 7 first on Mika. perhaps this attempt failed. "beep beep" being Mika trying to 'connect' to the Wired. or perhaps, as the prophet that the Doll talks to Lain of, Mika is causing the chain of events. perhaps the 'split' is rather two possibilities.. showing the change of events due to her starting the domino effect of changes..

i see the Alien [known as "LAINsmall" in the script] as the way Lain sees herself. as an "alien" form. LAINsmall is watching all and everything. when LAINsmall is watching LAIN, she appears Alien to herself.. perhaps symbolizing not knowing who she is anymore, or the changes she is going thru.

when LAINsmall is seen in her 'Lain head' form in Arisu's eyes, this is perhaps to show the connection between the two. who knows... also, there's the connection to what Drizz suggested... Lain is being shy.. however, perhaps LAINsmall only symbolizes Lain as a watcher.

Lain answers your question #5 with her own Dialogue. i believe this is in EGO... she says that there are not many Lains.. but rather many memories containing different visions of Lain.

no. Knights are trying to understand Lain. i'm sure they manipulate her a bit. but most definitely not control her.

yeah.. Accela is a way for someone to speEd up their brain capabilities so that they can process faster.. thus feeling closer to the Wired.. or closer to being connected. i don't see any relation to Accela and the Knights.

Overall, one of the biggest Lain threads ever created (before there was a dedicated forum) is this one:

Go ahead and revive them if you want to continue. ;)

drizzten, you're my hero.

as for Lain's reality, it can't be said one way or the other since she is both an anchor and a methodus by which the world is anchored.

in other words, for all intents and purposes, Lain is the application which holds the two worlds , real and wired , together. she is being pulled and twisted in so many directions by so many forces that she deletes all memory of herself in other people : thus it's almost as if she never existed to begin with.

so the logical loophole is this : she is the glue to reality, but not part of it. she once was, but she took herself out of the loop in order to more fully explore her power.

*phew*

I'm only someone's hero when I get a medal. ;)

Excellent way to put that, kusinagi. Lain can be considered the joining framework between the Wired and the Real World, but not the actual structure. Maybe havok can comment.

i'd have to disagree... to some extent. they talk of the Wired always existing. and they talk of people always being connected. Lain is just "reconnecting them" in her own words. perhaps in other words, rather than joining the Wired and Real World, Lain is only trying to show that the border "isn't so clear"... in the series, Lain tries to tell us that there isn't much of a border. so depending on what exactly you mean {which would take much more elaboration on your behalf, Kusinagi}... however, you could be saying the basic thing i am disagreeing with you so that i may state. while, all in all, it boils down to the idea that perhaps rather than exploring her "power" that everyone is after, maybe Lain is rather exploring this World that she deliberately desires to protect from itself. hinse all the <<searching>>
