It's got that physical piloting system, it's like he's part of the ship, plus he's a quick study as a pilot.

Practice. You might have controls every where but with practice you can use them quiclky and smoothly and fast. Same with most computer games. With Mechwarrior(2 and 3) I use the mouse, Joystick and keyboard.
Their spread all over my desk but I'm able to pilot with the stick, use jump jet to jump over an enemy, point down shoot, hit the enemy mechs head(hopefully destroying the cockpit), turn around while in the air, hit someone on the ground behind me and hit the ground in a reverse run using the keyboard. It's not easy but it can be done.
Gene's the same way. If you noticed when their talking about how long their trips are their talking about 1000 hours and such for some part of their trips. Mostly likly he's practicing combat piloting while on those trip and with the eye scope he drops down when ever they go into grapler combat mode it directly link him to the ship, basicly giving a some of controsl to mental/eye control (I'm guessing the mental control but that what it looks like to me.) and the rest to superfast computers. So he's got the controls he use by hand, the some by speech, more yet by mental/eye controls, and then Computers on the Outlaw Star that are specifily design to help with combat control.

:eek2:How can u do that? I guess it is all about practice. Wonder what it would be like to pilot the Outlaw Star. Like Kensuke in Evangelion said, "Oh man, I wish I could get inside that lovely cockpit just once." :lol: But here's another question: Who likes the El Dorado? Sure, it's the MacDougall Brothers' ship, but man, 4 Grappler Arms. Incredible!

all Gene really does is turn, accelerate and fight with the grapler arms. two joystick that move and clamp the way you want them to. Melfina does most of the work, like calculating the sped of decelaration and making sure you're still in one piece when going through hyperdrive. the hardest thing gene really had to do was try to land for the first time with the outlaw star, it was REALLY funny:lol:

Gilliam does a lot too.

gillium acts more like the eyes of the ship . . . telling gene if he's too close to something or things like that.

On one episode Gilliam was doing the thrusters, I think Melfina only took over when they went inside the Leyline because she said something like, "Turn the controls over to me Gilliam" when they got inside.

gillium gave over the controles because no one could see anything and gillium couldn't manuver the ship because his controls didn't respond (because no one could see anything)

All other issues aside...I think Gene should have kept the thing black and white.

the outlaw star is my favorite part of the show..its very manervorable and extremely fast.....So Full of Mercy is exactly right...gene becomes part of the outlaw star...joining with the main computer system...the ship is connected with the human wearer.if the human tinks left left RIGHT AWAY the ship goes left
:D

i still think the ship is like a car, turn the wheel right and it'll go right. there isn't a connection between the pilot and the ship.

I though it was because of the open cockpit system. His space phobeia wasn't as bad in the outlaw star.

If he woulda done that, the XGP wouldn't be camoflauged...and it could be easily spotted as the stolen ship!! He colored it to cover up a scratch he'd acquired while escaping from that astroid while under the pirate assault and to make it NOT look like the stolen XGP.
Anyways...here's some other information on the XGP...just to clear some things up.
<WARNING!! CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!>
Without contest, the most advanced ship in the galaxy. The XGP15A-II was a result of secret cooperation between the Space Forces and the Pirate Guilds. Built for the express purpose of finding the Galactic Leyline, the XGP sported all of the latest in technological advances.
In addition to its speed and agility, the XGP is also armed to the teeth with various missile bays and hardpoints. It is, most importantly, a grappler ship, so it also features a pair of powerful grappler arms, able to engage in arm-to-arm combat, as well as wielding various tools (buzzsaws, laser cutters) and handheld weapons (axes and guns). During combat, the Outlaw Star may launch a number of independently maneuverably camera pods which can give a better image of the combat field when vision is normally obstructed. They do have a limited range, and usefulness varies depending on debris and other factors.
The computer system consists of two parts. First, the artificial intelligence nicknamed "Gilliam II", which handles most ship functions, and the bio-android known as Melfina who handles navigation.
The XGP was stolen by Hilda before it was even taken on a test run by the Space Force/Pirate Guild cooperative, so the action they faced shortly before Hilda's death was quite literally the first it had been put up against. The ship fared remarkably well. Later dubbed the "Outlaw Star" by Gene, and painted in a flamboyant red color, it was outfitted with weaponry and supplies, courtesy of Fred Luo. These additions were much needed, as the Outlaw Star soon found itself forced to prove itself in real grappler combat ... it, of course, excelled. Later, during the Heifong Space Race, the Outlaw Star finished a respectable fourth, but first in the privateer class, truly an amazing achievement for a first time entrant, and truly a testament to both the technological wonder that the ship is, as well as Gene's piloting ability.

Well that does clear stuff up. But I'm still wondering if Hilda died…-I mean couldn't see had used that Tao master to but a sheild around them and or teleport them? But since everyone thought she was dead she layed low? Just a hypothsis.

Depends on which version you saw...the CN version, or the unedited version. Just last week, I was able to snag a peek at the unedited version...THANK GOD!! *huff huff*
<YES!! MORE SPOILERS DAMN IT!!>
In the CN version of Outlaw Star, we see that Hilda grabs onto that freaky lil girl's leg and falls into sun...whoo hoo...everythings all better. One could say that Hilda could've used the Tao chick for protection 'n' whatnot...but...er...she didn't. If you've seen the real version, Hilda's death actually isn't just falling into the sun, Farfallas. Her death is actually pretty damn cool. (And this is the reason that the whole teleportation thing and light shield idea really wouldn't work.)
Hilda, drifting towards Farfallas, sees that the ship isn't turning back. She smiles as she realizes there was nothing Gene could do. She looks off to the side and sees the persistent little pirate bugger *still* trying to aim a spell at the XGP. Hilda grabs onto her ankle, surprising her enough to pause the spell. "Do you read me Gene? Just remember one thing. Outlaws never go down easy." With one last accepting smile, she bites down on a grenade, causing a gigantic explosion that incinerates everything in a 100-foot radius.
THAT my friend is Hilda's real death...
