From what I've understood they based them on goddesses from Norse mythology... so I guess that'd be the answer..

New to the boards and just wanted to say hi. Got into Oh! My Goddess by watching an anime music video I found at Zero Gravity Studios (http://rpgs.s5.com) site. So I checked out the movie. Well it sort of leaves you hanging if you don't know the characters so I got the episodes and have been hooked ever since.
