After Naota's brother left for America, she became attached to Naota. Maybe not quite boyfriend/girlfriend, but they got close. But when in distress, she called out to Naota's brother...and that bugged Naota, so he decided to prove himself. Remember that he sucked at baseball, while his brother was a star player. Naota probably felt inadequate and didn't want Mamimi to think he was a wussy.

basicaly youve just been dumped by your boy freind who is going over seas to play baseball...
your filled with all sorts of crazy emotions your familys poor and disfunctional and youve basicaly just lost your only freind and person who cared about you...
what do you do?...
why hit on his brother of course..
Mamimi never wanted to let naotas bro go ... so she didnt.
notice how she always called naota and every other bloody thing for that matter... ta.
tasuki or something like that was naotas brothers name so this was her way to cling on to "hope" or "ignorance" or whatever you want to call it...
she never realy loved naota but she neaded him for her sanitys sake...
its not realy that far fetched a concept to grasp just take a look at every regular joe and jane out there... and i bet half of them do the same thing...

That's why she kept calling Naota, the cat, and the terminal core Ta-Kun. Because she was trying to replace Tasuke. Saying she called Naota because of the end Ta is just an excuse. He would generally be called Na-Kun wouldn't he?

Something I noticed on a re-re-review ( :D ) of episode 2, is that Mamimi was chanting "furi-kuri, furi-kuri, furi-kuri" when she was sitting within the circle of cigarettes. An explaination escapes me, since she wasn't around for the earlier "discussion" with Naota and his family.

D'oh! And here i keep thinking Ta-kuhn was short for Noata. I know the kuhn is a Japaneese suffix for cute/freind. I totally forgot the brother's name.

Tasuku I believe...
The Ta-kun/Naota mix-up was most likely on purpose though...
One interesting thing I found with FLCL did you notice that everything she named Ta-kun left her. Naota spent more time with Haruko as the series went on, the cat went off with another white cat and the controller went off to serve its purpose. Also there was Tasuku who now "had a blond girl"

Also with Haruko constantly calling Naota 'Taro'
That's sooo cool having a generalistic male name... so if you don't know someone's name you just call them taro... heh
Yeah, and it was lucky that he was not a Taro in episode 1 because a Taro would have been killed by her Vespa

Not to get too far off topic, but I think she called him "Taro" because she was testing him to see if he was a common guy...because she needed someone better than that. I think she was calling him Taro simply as a joke to herself. Carefully re-read the subs and tell me what you think.
Taking this idea a step further (and to get back on topic), Mamimi refused to let Haruko call him Taro without telling her that wasn't his name. Maybe a subconcious way of her defending him??

wasn't the general one of haruko's victims?

The general? Do you mean Amarao, the guy with the eyebrows? I think he was her target once, then he recovered somehow (both his head and his pride), and decided to go after her.

I agree with what you're saying here. I just threw in that remark becasue that was a line (at least in my fansubbed copy anyway) That he survived because he wasn't named Taro. I agree that it had deeper meaning than that , he wasn't a normal boy.... he was special.
Mamimi was interesting in this scene becasue at first she was simply taking photos but later she seemed to defend him.

Yet another thread that I have missed the chance to answer before anyone else :bawling:

Mamimi just needs something to be attatched to. some[one]thing to feel close to. Takasa is gone, and i can imagine {as i'd seen ex-girlfriends or just girl friends of mine do similar things} that she'd no friends other than Takasa. she probably revolved her life around that relationship and had given herself reason to live thru that relationship. as Takasa had left, she found she had no one, yet by being familiar with his family, the only person she'd found who she could close in on was Naota. because Naota was 'available'..
now why does Naota make himself 'available' to her? well i imagine the great possibility that, as he looks up to his brother so greatly, Naota had probably developed feelings for Mamimi as the imagry that his brother had feelings for her. why does he seem to dislike her "molesting" him then, while not stopping her? probably because he doesn't want her to do it because he probably KNOWS she's just getting close to him so she can feel close to his brother. all the meanwhile, he's attracted to her, thus he doesn't stop her because perhaps it's the closest he'll get to her actually wanting him for HIM.
the photographing Naota's early collision with Haruko was probably just showing Mamimi's artistic side. it's not that Mamimi doesn't care that he's being beaten up, but she's recording it thru her artistic eye just before she's going to defend him. also, it shows Mamimi get jealous when Haruko kisses him.. not only by her screaming still-frame/active-camera bit, but also by her line "did she slip you the tongue?" {or however exactly that was worded}... then we also have her grabing Naota's body and shielding it with her own, as Haruko carries on about to beat on him some more... because none other than that she doesn't want him to be beaten on anymore. hell, i wouldn't be surprised if these things {photographing and defending} all together are to show that she has her passion for photography yet does also care for Naota.
i think subconscious or not, Mamimi was definitely defending him. but i mostly found Mamimi demanding Haruko not to call him "Taro" as the verbal irony in the form that she calls him "Ta-kun" yet she is telling Haruko "[Taro] is not his name!"
later on, we have Naota trying to kiss Mamimi and she denies his kiss. {damn, poor guy} why's that? because she doesn't really like him... but she played him on.
and we also see her calling out for Takasa, yet this upsets Naota... because perhaps this is Naota finally deciding he wants to be loved for HIM rather than cared for as 'available'.... damn, i had much deeper thoughts on the topic, but i was recently interrupted by a friend i hadn't talked to in ages.. adieu.
